Aussies abroad

kind of amazing how players adjust to the league they are in. Promoted teams at the start of the year always look so at sea, but give a player enough practice at this level and they find a way

To me Sainsbury at his peak was a better player than Burgess, but if you looked at who's accomplished more at club football you would have to say Burgess
Sainsbury I really liked at the time because he was our first player that could play out the back. But watching replays of socceroos matches, my opinion of sainsbury dropped a bit :(

What games do you think he was very poor? He had a rough ending where his passing wasn't good and there were defensive lapses.

He seemed to lift for the bigger games.

the last two I rewatched were the 2 games v japan last set of wcqs. It also added to an (admittedly vague) growing impression rewatching games involving him and spira that I could see why they on the one hand looked good, but never really made waves at club level

Yeah both Japan games were dross. Well, crucial moments he got wrong. The duck in the first for the winner and the second he trotted along when thy scored both.

Funny old game as they both had their heights but injuries and choices kept clubland glory at bay.

Hrustic subbed on after 12min in a 2:0 loss. Doubt he'll be taking EasyJet to Milan tonight.

Chipperfield got his first start and got an assist

Rowles played a full game in a 1 zip loss, devline subbed at 72 minutes soon after his yellow

Oniells team got smashed 5 nil and he played a full match

His best season in club land was 24 games for zwolle
I remember at the time him doing better, but australian standards were lower then. Hopefully theyll continue to rise. I miss having players the calibre of kewell and dukes

In fairness Kewell and Viduka are 2 of the best we've ever had. More an exception than the rule.

We have never come close to producing players of the calibre of Kewell & Viduka, before or since, no Aussie players come close to the technical ability of these 2.

When it was Kewell in baggy long sleeve Leeds kit and gloves you were down 2:0 before it began.

Crew cut Kewell was alright too.

I would argue that Aaron Mooy was a seriously good player. Hard to compare him with the likes of Harry and Dukes because he played in a less flashy position but he got Huddersfield promoted and kept them up almost single-handedly. Many on their forum said he was the greatest player ever to pull on their shirt. Again, no comparison with the level of club Harry and Dukes played for but that's one hell of an endorsement.

If we had someone of his ability now we'd be looking good.
