Australia open 2025

Ofcourse it was a selling beat up but also it was true back in the early days TSF.
We were the well behaved good sporting nation from the 60’s 70’s and before typically polite and admired well behaved sports people and didn’t call out bad behaviour for it was rude.
In someways like Wimbledon types all white clothing yadda yadda and the players luved the easy going nature of the Aussie way therefore the happy slam was driven.
A lot has changed since those Anglo dominated days.
I recall it well.
Honestly, I thank God we don't live like that every day. That sounds horrendous and the people who needed an uppercut never got one because that would be rude.

I don't watch AEW I'm afraid.
You and me both - amongst most of the world.

Anyways, what I'm alluding to - even though I'm just creating a tenuous, tenuous link to tennis to have this discussion - is they're having a show called "Grand Slam', in 2 weeks time, which traditionally (only 2 years though) had been held in the Arthur Ashe Stadium (centre court for the US Open) just after the US Open.

They announced an Australian "Grand Slam" show late last year - which you'd expect to be held in Rod Laver Arena, given the above context. But no, it was announced for Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

But, as you and I both fall into - no-one watches AEW, so they're never going to sell tickets in a stadium, so they've already quickly moved the show to a smaller stage. Not to Pat Rafter Arena, like you'd expect with the tennis gimmick of "Grand Slam' or to another city, but to the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

AEW downwards spiral has been interesting. I doubt tony Khan or any of them know anything about tennis

That's odd. There's only 4 Grand Slams and I thank God we are one but Brisbane International is just a 250 event, same with Adelaide.

Significant - yes, but not Grand Slams.

These Challengers are only 75's and it's usually only locals that play and barely anyone attends but I would love for Brisbane to be different. Show up, support your local before the football.

Has Australia ever had a 500/Masters tournament? I only just looked and am surprised there's not much else other than the Aus Open at that level...

Why would there be? Now you see why it is incredibly important to support the AO? We get nothing beyond a Grand Slam and there are sharks around us.

don't think there's a issue re AO support - its pretty big and successful besides some negative press and some players whinging.
Same for every Slam.
Talking support discussion.
Dokic.
I grew up during her era - my wife bought me her first book last year - tbh didn't finish it all for I saw what went on and you read and listenned to everything that was being reported.
Watched most of the doco last night, I'm amazed how many people didn't do enough to support her, sure it was very different and people got away with alot being abusive but Damir was pretty obvious to see what a nutcase of a father and abuser.
TA should have done alot more to support her.

Man she was a weapon of a young womens player at the time, seeing her smoke #1 Hingis at wimbledom with power ground strokes and volleys as mentioned - if it wasn't for the that headfuck dad she could have made #1 sooner or later, she did have the game.
Real shame.

Haven't watched the doco yet but I will tonight.

AO support is never guaranteed. We can't afford to let this tournament slip. We have such horrible media in this country.

On the womens side of the Brisbane draw Inglis is through to the semi-final as the number 1 seed. She is 16 and has an impressive future ahead of her. It was great to see her in the AO juniors live.

People will keep going to the AO despite the pathetic media - we luv sport and big events don’t forget, that won’t be stopped by woeful media.

Brisbane QTC International results:

Men's winner: Tristan Schoolkate
Women's winner: Priscilla Hon

Too easy for the Aussies.

Birrell and Walton take out the W75 Brisbane and the ATP Challenger Brisbane tournaments respectively. Greta to see two Aussies win it. Walton moves off to the ATP 250 event in Florida where I'm sure the fans will be like choir boys.

Meanwhile De Minaur moves on to the 500 final in Rotterdam where he faces Alcaraz. That is live on Bein Sports.

Back to Bernie again M25 and W75 events. Not many Aussies on the women's side this time around which is really bizarre for Bernie.

De Minaur playing tonight on Bein. Straight sets win last night. I don't see him going further than he already has in terms of rankings. I feel he has peaked.
