It’s our third and final Matchday as the Subway Joeys look to secure AFC U17 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2025™ Qualification

A winner-takes-all clash with Indonesia awaits, as we battle to top Group G and for guaranteed qualification

🇦🇺 v 🇮🇩 28.10.24 - 1.30am AEDT
📍 Abdullah Al Khalifa Stadium, Mishref

oz v indonesia play out a snore draw angering fans of kuwait but it means both teams qualify

On reddit someone found the last thirty minutes of footage where we just pass the ball around the back four for 30 minutes

Thoughts? Mind u knocking kuwait out with tine wasting does have a bit of poetic justice to it

Riveting

The risk adverse nature within Oz football at all levels doesn’t help, but this is a bad look not only on us but also Indonesia surely the point of competition is to compete otherwise what’s the point of playing if you going to do something like this?

Especially given this is only u17 level where the players are still developing.

On Asian board everyone condemned Australia as a coward nation. It is normal to do it in the last 5 but not for goddamn 30-40 minutes.

That Australian coach should be investigated for unsportmanlike. Shame on Australia. But feel so bad for India that they gave it all out there only.to see this coward team passing around without any intention to attack it is a disgrace to football.

This is more disgrace than Arab teams acting and wasting time.. with attitude like that you will never go far. Look at how Japan beating Qatar 5-0 that how it should be played with spirit. And how Thailand played so.hard against India. If you don't want to win just don't make it too obvious and disgusting like that.

This game is already famous on social but for all the wrong reason.

I'm ok with it. Is it within the rules? They should be changed if it's so bad. Australia is just joining in with the west Asian time wasting culture. Maybe it'll bring things to a head.

I hate this. It proves that the decision makers in that team put results above all else, and at this age group surely development and utilising precious time to actually PLAY the game should be championed above all else.

Not sure if it's sack worthy but definitely disgraceful and if the coach went rogue on this one FA should step in and say no way do we go out to waste time when we are representing the nation.

I'm not sure Asian teams can really be on their high horse. Their defensiveness and time wasting tactics over the years are 10 fold anything Australia has done

Happened a couple of times with us in these tournaments. One against South Korea who were more than happy to wind it down.

yes and no, I suppose we want to get to the next tournament

actually I don't think that was at risk though, even if we lost? Probably just saving them from injury?

I know other teams are also guilty of this but to me that's no excuse. Just because someone else does something bad doesn't mean you should too. This isn't naivety, you need to stay true to your values and standards.

UK based Asian football writer here,

I don't think there's anything wrong with 'settling' for a draw but did they have to be so blatant? Indonesia parked the bus from minute one, the only way they were going to play was if they conceded. This was a perfect scenario for Australia to work on breaking down ultra defensive teams but for whatever reason they help out Indonesia big time. Considering the strength and play styles of both teams, this had a 0-0 score written all over it already but to see 16/17 year old teams resort to these antics is quite disheartening and reflects poorly on both teams in my opinion.

Japan-Qatar, Iraq-Uzbekistan, Tajikistan-Oman and Thailand-India were all in the same boat and stuck to their structure, played the natural game for the whole 90 minutes and some, in the end have been punished for not essentially rigging the match.

I guess that's football, at least I know which two teams won't make it out of the group stage next April.

Welcome to the forum.

I agree they could have settled for a draw by using a defensive structure. The blatant time wasting is the issue here.

As a cricket tragic I'd use the cricket example where if the Sheffield Shield final is a draw then the team that finishes on top of the ladder wins. This doesn't mean the team on top wins the toss, chooses to bat and precedes to block out every ball for 5 days just because they don't require a win.
