Vearts first conference

guy looks like he's seen a ghost. Does he normally interview like this? Probably still mentally recovering from the drama at Adelaide.

I don't think it was that bad. Seems like it has been a bit of a whirlwind for him with only starting the gig a few days ago and then possibly being ripped away from the camp in the background to speak into some blokes phone with a camera in your face.

All I know is his record with nurturing young talent is second to none in Aus at the moment so two thumbs up from me.

So question: is this emerging roos championship a new initiative or an old one or one that was reborn from something we used to do

I’m not sure how long they have been going in this format, I remember them last year as well although maybe they had a different name. However there were national U15 and U16 (and U18) championships held every year back in the day (I’m talking since 50 years ago) and these championships seem very similar with the exception that now the bigger states have two teams each in the competition.

I know Harry Kewell played for an underage state team. I am wondering if we are now redoing a lot of initiatives that were lost in the a league era

The Emerging Socceroos and Emerging Matildas Championships are rebrands of the previous National Youth Championships but they're only starting to expand the tournament structure from this year onwards so it better mirrors high-performance environments.

Yeah, I thought he was fine. Made sense - seems to know (and love) what he's doing.

do you know the specifics of how it has expanded and what the plans are?

All or most of those GG players would have played for state underage teams in national championships, I suspect. But maybe those sort of tournaments stopped when the A League started, as you said. I'd be interested to know the history.

I don't know the specifics of the previous structure but it is now four groups of four with placement matches and finals, and Football Australia have implemented workshops and seminars which will be progressively integrated between this year and 2028. They've also introduced more awards like the Golden Boot and a Fair Play Award, and have carried out the rebranding to reinforce clear pathways from juniors to Socceroos and Matildas.

On Australian football history
"
National under-age tournaments have been held annually since the 1960s. The first tournament I've been able to track was the 1964 National Youth Carnival, an U18 competition played in Adelaide. A few years later the age group was changed to U16.
By 1970 it had expanded to U10, U12 and U16. The competition had also been rebranded the National Junior Championship for the two younger age groups with the older group the National Youth Championship.
A further expansion had U12, U13, U14, U15 and U16 teams playing by 1973. It appears the U12s ended in 1980 and for quite a few years the oldest age group flipped between U16, U18 and U19.
National Talent Identification Championship seem to have commenced in 1990 with U13, U14 and U15 only. Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, Hobart, Darwin, the Gold Coast, Lismore, Morwell, Alice Springs, Bundaberg and Whyalla all hosted tournaments between 1964 and 1999.
By the 2000 edition the tournament had been slimmed to U15 and U16 with hosting rights held by Sydney. That changed around 2005 or 2006 to Coffs Harbour."

So sounds similar to other parts of our youth development, expanded in the 90s then slimmed down in the a league era, perhaps expanding again.

I don't know how necessary talent identification on a national level is until u15 seeing as we no longer have a national base and the youngest cohort to play for the national team is usually u17 with some u16 teams basically filling in.

Finally got a bit of time to check the U20 WC. Our last game against Cuba may be a decider whether we advance and hopefully we're not in a hole with 2 losses.

Clubs need to release players, right? I fear we won't get the bigger names.

The Emerging Socceroos and Emerging Matildas Championships

Are $3.5k per player. what average Australian family can afford this? I dont know about you guys but when I was in school the best athletic kids were almost never well off. No wonder we got eurosnob fans most of the people in the sport are wealthy snobs lol bring back the ethnic community games at least some old bloke from Macedonia might actually coach for free.
