Australian Football TV rights

Fair enough. Our of curiosity is there anyone from fox sports you miss? I feel like peacock is lost opportunity not being involved in football these days
Probably only Peacock. However, I'm pretty sure he is still around the game on Stan and does a podcast. The others I would have kept on are still around (Simon Hill, Mel, and Tara). The others had a knowledge, but they were often wrong more times than they were right and didn't really offer much substance. Slater was probably the worst for me. Bozza, I respect his talent as a player, but I couldn't look past his demeanour in discussion. Simon Harper was decent, and a lovely guy, but he sometimes just overcomplicated the commentary. We love when Peter Drury does the poetry, but Harper just couldn't cut it at that and he kept trying and failing.

People like to hate on Optus for reasons that are quite dumb, or simply because it is Optus. I don't understand the Optus hate. They have provided the best EPL country we have ever had in this country. Fox Sports was truly diabolical and could not care less for football in this country. Yet people will runa nd jump on Kayo.

Stan also are ripping off customers. Forcing people to buy the basic package before the sports pacakge.

I'm surprised people in this country don't realise how they are being manipulated to like the good services in favour of the bad ones, especially the ones owned by people like Murdoch.

Optus basically just relay an international feed of the EPL. All they need to do is have half decent Australian based servers. It took them a good 2-3 years until they worked this out. The first season of the EPL on Optus was laughable at best. They were totally unprepared.

Optus also:
- Bought the tv rights and initially made the product exclusively for Optus customers only.
- Offered a satellite service which they have now cut
- Had linear channels, which they converted to virtual channels (eliminating the ability to record). They now have cut these channels all together and only have one linear channel which is a relay of the EPL feed.
- Promised 4K to Optus customers, then went silent on it and to the best of my knowledge have never addressed it since.
- As above, lost La Liga and never even publicly acknowledged it.
- Swapped an EPL game a week with SBS for 2018 World Cup rights and totally shit the bed when the tournament started. Had to hand everyone free Fetch TV’s to save face (a device they now no longer care about).
- Charge non optus customers $25 a month and have unskippable 30 second ads on a 3 minute video. I hope Hungry Jacks are getting a ROI.

Optus have always gone cheap in everything they do. As above their entire business model is to lean the product as much as possible but increase the price as often as possible. That’s why they got hacked and why someone in Russia now has copies of my drivers license.

In a way those Fox presenters were of the time and have gone with the time and that's ok.

UK Sky is just ghastly now with those small seat podiums with bright white lights. No ambience at all. Soccer Saturday was of course legendary and that long table was omnipresent in the banter across it. The value of a good prop.

I find the way a lot of sport TV stations have no gone some odd modern way of minimalism with bright white lights and a bear looking studio just so uninviting. Not to mention the terrible punditry coming out of their mouths.

Paramount has a basic studio too but their budget is so small.

I get that Optus has the young bloke on the comfy armchair too.

Maybe it's just myself getting older but the senior SBS analysis by Murray and others on a Sunday can't be eclipsed.

You've got to realise also we are so saturated in information and media now with our technology that a lot of football scenes and news don't have the same effect anymore.

I think back then we'd see a clip of something wild in Europe and call others into the room to have a look at it. Shows today will show a clip or a tweet and we think 'yeah, seen it already'.

I've gotten older but I find the Bundesliga for example has become a youth development league and the hard nuts of 2005-2012 are gone. It's just flair kids with dreadlocks and backflips. Entertaining to an extent but it comes across as more of a circus then genuine.

Also the recent analysis that a lot of big teams play the same style as tactics and players have become robots. That's why I prefer the unpredictability of the lower leagues. The EPL is having an excellent season so hopefully it's turned a corner in that regard.

Magic Round OK but maybe one round we can also have A League kick offs all at once and have a conference style session. Crossing to all the goals and big moments. Just one round a season. The League isn't big enough for this regularly but something of a novelty for this league. A staple of the Bundesliga and German sky do it for EPL on occasion.

No doubt that Optus had teething issues at first and did some things people might not have been happy with, but name one media company that has done things that were in consumers best interest. The World Cup drama didn't affect me, but I know it was an issue for many. In saying that, it hasn't been an issue since, so you are just hanging on to old issues rather than focusing on the current. Fetch devices were always outdated. They were never going to have a long shelf life. There really is no point to them once smart TV's and the new version Chromecast upgraded.

Fox kept upping their price, but never updated the product. They also introduced HD, but then told people they had to pay extra for it. They did the same thing with 4K. So essentially, people were paying for the basic service, then extra for sport, extra for HD, extra for 4K. It was about $90/month by the time all the fees were added on. I had to threaten to quit to get them to bring it down to about $60. Stan and Paramount Plus have not offered great services at all. The coverage is below par especially on Paramount. Barely any real investment in growing the local game, yet no one has uttered a single word against them.

I don't care that Optus relays an international feed. Fox did the exact same thing, only much worse. In saying that, Optus has it's own shows, own programmes, and has presenters on the ground in England. So they have a mix of own production, and the relay.

Of course they would have the incentive of cheaper prices for Optus customers, it's consumerism 101. As for the ads, don't even pretend like they are the only company with ads. Prime have introduced ads. Netflix has ads. The unskippable ad is 15 seconds long. Says more about the attention span and patience of the individual than the company. You want Optus to remain at a decent price, then you need the ads.

All this hate towards Optus is baffling really. Fox literally said they don't care about the consumer. I was there where the people from Fox said, "we don't really care about the football coverage to invest in it" and Damien De Bohun nodded along saying, "too many Eurosnobs". Fox treated football fans like garbage, and all of you are carrying on like they were the messiahs of football. The hate for Optus is weird. Almost weirdly nationalistic hate.

Geez, that's a quick way to get me off the Optus bandwagon hahaha.

What are Amazon up to these days? They wanted to get into sport a few years ago.

Your last paragraph is bizarre so I’ll ignore it.

To respond to some of the other points in your post:

- Prime is half the price of Optus
- Netflix without ads is cheaper than Optus
- Stan as a service is miles ahead of Optus. They showed champions league in 4K (until UEFA ditched it this season) and everything else is in proper 1080p. They also show the grand slams in 4K, and have a number of other sports they show. They also have no ads.

Optus is literally a relayed EPL feed with some other bargain leagues where there couldn’t be more than 1000 people watching at once (J league, K league, women’s football).

- Paramount is a bit like Optus (but way cheaper and way more content) where they run a service as lean and nasty as possible.

- Optus based their whole product around the Fetch tv. They had their linear channels on there. Then Fetch was sold to Telstra so Optus did the bolt. Has nothing to do with Chromecasts and Smart TV’s. Last time I checked Optus sport on fetch tv was some 25fps low bit rate mess.

- Speaking of HD, Optus could barely do 720p up until last season. Check out the pages of complains on whirlpool about it. Typical Optus being cheap. They went from 1080p to promising 4k to then going to 720p and now back to 1080p. They probably used the money they are saving after losing La Liga and cutting their live channels on better servers.

I think Optus is shit. It has always been shit. I also don’t think they’ll be around for too much longer.

My last paragraph is not bizarre. It's an interaction I had with the then head of the FFA and people from Fox.

I pay $8 for Optus sport. Prime may be half, but the point was not about the price, it was about the ads. You pay for the service and get ads midway through shows. And you are complaining about the Hungry Jacks 15 second ads.
Again, Netflix is only cheaper if you don't have Optus. In saying that, Netflix doesn't cover any sport, so it's not really a comparison.
You are kidding if you think Stan is miles ahead. You complain about the cost of Optus, but are happy to be ripped off by Stan? Optus provides way better coverage and offers way more than just matches. I t is also shown in proper 1080p.

How the heck do you think Fox showed or Stan show football matches? They don't have their own cameras. They have relayed feeds. Just because you don't watch a league, does not mean others are not. They also show FA Cup, DFB Pokal, and a whole host of international competitions that get plenty of views.

Paramount is nothing like Optus. It's a very crappy service and doesn't provide anything close to what Optus provides.

I'm not going to go into all the other points you are making because it's clear that you have a strong hate for Optus regardless of what anyone says or evidence is provided. I worked in the industry and I've seen how all these providers operate. I'm not speaking from my own view, but from experience. I saw the plans. Fans don't realise this, but Optus Sport was a major blessing for football. If Optus sport goes, the football fans will be the biggest loses.

Don’t give Optus credit for their coverage. It is the sport streaming era. All they are doing is forwarding on international coverage with a few of their average shows sprinkled in on VOD. If they kept their own channels then fair enough… but they don’t. Kayo didn’t even exist when Optus won the rights for a platform that didnt even exist yet (and it showed).

Ps how good are Optus replays ? If you can’t wake up at 4am to watch a game, you can watch a replay in glorious 720p/25 FPS. Got to claw back those costs somehow. This used to be avoidable when you could record games on fetch, but ofcourse they got rid of this to save $$$. In comparison - all of Stan’s replays are 1080p / 50 fps - some are even in 4K.

I’m glad you get a discount for Optus sport, I do too. Probably doesn’t make up for their security breach though.

And your other post was still bizarre. We are talking about a below average sports streaming product owned by a company based in Singapore…

May I also add that Optus used to be free for Optus customers - now it’s $7-8 a month (and they tell us we are getting a discount!!). That’s just Optus taking a small hit on one service to ensure people like yourself and I become rusted on to their average overpriced mobile network.

I love how Optus increased my monthly cost last year but said they will give me extra data a month (I never used more than 50% of my quota at the time). Genius!

I will give them credit, because their coverage of the EPL is the best we've seen in Aus. You make like Optus are the only ones using a relay. They use relays in pretty much every single country. You are also ignoring that Optus does produce it's own shows, has their own pitch side reporters at some games, and does more than just relays.

To me the replays are the same as 1080p or HD. Doesn't even feel like a drop, so I don't see the issue.

Yes, I know what we are talking about. The point was that Fox coverage was worse than Optus and I was giving the proof of how much the people at Fox cared so little for football.

Anyway, you clearly just have a strong hate for Optus. They could turn around tomorrow and give the service for free and you'd probably still complain.

Christ my aging eyes must be totally stuffed - I can hardly tell the picture diff though don’t watch many replays for I’m a must see Live game type no matter the time.
I can see the point complaining as a Optus customer for imo they are ordinary for mobile network - the breach well that would piss me off but wide world web knows most about us all anyway.
Their original WC stuff up didn’t last long and they corrected it - that’s when I joined obviously to watch WC games And importantly EPL !
I agree with zimbos coverage is great imo that’s all I need.
Have no care about other issues past probs whatever just as long as I can watch live EPL games with ease.
Australia is the land of whingers move on.

Hate it. Vodafone Germany is like that as they provide the cable lines for Sky. They then try and get you to switch over to their crap internet and TV packages so your cable rent goes down 5€ a month only.

Don't get me started on the hassles here of getting a satellite put in as a tenant.

We're just talking about which platform is better nothing wrong with healthy discussion

Optus Sport + Bein Sports + Stan with Stan Sports add on + Triller TV

Pretty much covers everything European football for me....

All on Apple tv4.

Excellent HD picture quality except for BeIn which is still running at 25fps.
