Yeah the Dogs exceeded the cap in 2002, but if people look at the official squad it was fairly ordinary.
We had a lot of locally developed talent coming though.
I went and watched the Flegg side around 2000 a relatively unknown guy called Thurston was playing. Believe it or not, there was a lot of hype about another player and that guy never played NRL.
Dogs management was a shambles 1998-2018, salary cap was just one of our problems.
Guys like Mason, Asotasi, SBW, Sherwin, El Masri, Thurston, Steve Price, Utai, Jamie Feeney, and a few others were locally developed.
In spite of poor management, some aspects of club culture, player scouting and development hang on for a while. But the salary cap scandal was the beginning of the end.
As good as they were, we didn't really need to sign guys like Andrew Ryan, Braith Anasta etc...
A fewer years later in 2009 all of the good players were gone and the side was shambles....
Player culture, fitness and standards were all gone,
A few years later Des and Crusher killed off what remained of scouting and development.
2012 was a brief false dawn with a pretty well assembled side that went backwards.
Last season 2024 was the first time I thought that we were headed in the right direction and had the right coach and management since 1995.
We paid a high price for poor management, the 2004 premiership was more of a relief than a celebration. I'm celebrating the next one.
The team now is more like a real Dogs team 1973-1995. Flashy stars are not normally how we roll.
Rebuild for 2019 was a bit like the initial build in the 1970s. We have made great progress over the last 5 years. Rising up again is vindication and reward for hanging in during the tough times.
