Hey all, with the last international window for the Matildas in season 2024 coming to an end, do you think Sermanni will stay on as interim head coach for the SheBelieves Cup in Feb next year or even become TG's permanent successor going into the 2026 home Women's Asian Cup/2027 Women's World Cup cycle?

Interested to hear your thoughts on how the Tillies coaching situation is going to pan out, who should be in the running for the job etc.

Welcome the forum!

I don’t think there has been any recent rumours regarding candidates. We need to find someone though

I don't think Sermanni will stay on. His results haven't been great. It won't happen but Joe Montemurro would be perfect.

He can't stay on. It would be regression for him to stay on. The dream candidate is Montemurro but I don't think he wants the role now and I think the FA is kind of at a loss. I'm not sure how the process would work, but I can't imagine that there have been applications for the role from good names.

The FA is playing some funny game that isn't working. We are falling behind the other teams, but we need to find a replacement before the SheBelieves

Based on recent history (pretty much since Ange resigned and Stajcic was booted), I just have the feeling that FA's process for recruiting coaches for either the men's or women's teams must be abysmal. Which of the coaches appointed since have proven to be good choices? And with respect to the Matilda's, FA have known since well before the Olympics that Gustavsson was going, and here we are many months later and still no apparent progress.

I just get the feeling that they don't really know how to go about getting someone, and consequently the process just drifts along and they hope someone will turn up, even if that person's main quality is that they just happen to be free at the time (e.g., Arnold, Popovic, Milicic) rather than ticking most of the boxes required for the job.

Why don’t they search the football forums there are plenty of candidates there. 😂😂😂
But seriously I think they should leave Sermanni there, at least for the next tournament. He knows many of the players, having brought them into the Matildas originally, he’s an experienced international team coach and needs time to bring in new players.

Montemurro falls out of contract at the end of June 2026 so we could give him the role then for the 2027 Women's World Cup and LA 2028 but ideally we need someone for 2025 and beyond. Won't be surprised to see Gary van Egmond in the running in the meantime given his previous experience as a Matildas assistant, A-League Women head coach and in the wider Australian youth system though.

But that would mean Emily stays on long after she should have retired. 😲

I'm ok with giving it to a manager that proves themselves in the a league. It's a bit of a carrot on the stick to achieving success in the league

GVE would again be a backward step.

I get that it's a tough one because you have Montemurro off contract in 2026, but if he is the Endgame, then your appointment needs to be his choice as someone who comes in to set up the foundation for him. Someone he knows and can trust to do the role for the short period, earn the success, but continue to improve and develop the squad the way Joe does.

Dario Vidosic is doing well at Brighton and at Melbourne City before that. He might be an option.

Outside of that, perhaps we need to look outside Australia. The one thing the manager needs is to be able to manage all the personalities. That seems to have been a challenge for all the recent Matilda's managers.

On the plus side he's given quite a few players a run that weren't getting one.

Dario is the best choice, need to act early as he could easily be in contention for a top WSL team

Considering the culture issues in that team in recent years I doubt he'd leave whatever he's been doing.

Any female coaches either here or in world football that would fit the bill?

I'd say current Mariners women's head coach Emily Husband would be in the running for the Matildas job, given that she's had experience with some of the newer players in the A-League Women already who may be getting debuts in the future.

Welcome to the forum, RF.

I'd prefer a more recently educated coach than TS.

The players could be completely happy with him, but I'm not sure he can take the Matildas to a higher level?

One thing I like that he has done, is play a lot of newer players. Like many foreign coaches coaching Aus, Pim and Holger, Tony G played a first eleven and didn't deviate much, being only concerned with immediate results. Conversely, in the recent friendlies TS has looked at a lot more prospective players for the future.
