Expansion Thread

If they turn soccer into park ball by lowering the cap roo much why pay a subscription to watch park football?.
Just don't subscribe anymore.

Not one saying the league is park football now just because the a-league needs more financial control it doesn't mean it will become park football standards.

Im not trying to defend the APL here, they have financially mismanaged the league and they feel they probably made some big mistakes along the way but now they trying to control the leagues finances as they feel if they continue to see the higher than usual spending it not going to end well for the clubs and the league.

Its maybe a unpopular take but I rather be financially sustainable than spend above our means if the money and demand is not there to justify the higher spending.

Few years back, though I'm from out of town, I attended a Sydney derby at the old SFS and on the way home saw shirted up young male WSW supporters hunting in packs and beating up on outnumbered SFC supporters mostly in pairs, minding their own business. It was horrible and disgraceful and that particular event wasn't even reported in the press. I always loved what the RBB brought to a game, but the ugly side was very ugly and had to stop.
 
Interesting that the League is on the edge of going out of professional business and people are talking about expansion. But, I guess, look at Auckland. Thing is, Auckland had the population, a suitable stadium and no club. The closest equivalent is clearly Gold Coast. Nothing else in the ball park.

Frankly, I don't see Canberra ever getting up. They just don't have the numbers to attract investors when the competition context is so tenuous. For the same reason, I can't see second teams in any Perth, Brisbane, or Adelaide, and Hobart is a joke without a punchline. So, for me, that leaves Gold Coast and possibly in a longer time frame, Sunshine Coast. Aim for 6k average season 1 and build from there. Its doable, and the thing about Gold Coast is that the location presents all kinds of cross merchandising opportunities for smart, connected owners.

I hope Auckland win the double, if only to encourage investors thinking about an expansion club - that it can be up and running this fast.

Auckland City is an Oceania LEGEND though (and club world cup dark horse), they certainly have many clubs

Would the solution be to stick with 13 teams? Or to get to 14 teams? There might be consortiums that might offer something, if the Apl ever call for expressions of interest for the expansion of Apl.
Ideal would be 16 teams eventually. Conroy is a half glass empty type though.

I think unless a miracle happens we are struck with 13 indefinitely unless the Bulls go under, which is a distinct possibility, given that they are suing FA over money and are highly unlikely to win. I don't exclude a miracel, though - Foley sure was one, but as per my earlier post, Gold Coast is the only location with anything like the context of Auckland and there is no gossip about a Gold Coast A League club. The League is in dire straits, and an investor would have to be rich enough, like Foley, not to care. Good luck with finding another one.

need stability in the league, an attempt to move to appropriate stadiums and no more of what the a-league has been since the two worst expansion teams joined

then after three to five years, maybe think about a gold coast/christchurch/wollongong/hobart/sunshine coast/ipswich

Agree. Both WU and the Bulls have done significant harm to the A League via the TV images of tiny crowds in empty stadiums. Can't happen again.
 
The Sunshine Coast will eventually have a 10,000 seating rectangular stadium and this would be ideal for an A League club. We don't have any national teams in any major competitions, so why not one in the A League?

Any love for a Sunshine Coast club in the A League??

It's up there as a possibility. But some people say there's little interest there and it's rugby only. Can anyone familiar with Sunshine Coast tell us if support for the game is there? Would it struggle, or would they go past Macarthur, Western, City?

Ha! No!!

Maybe one or two people with that kind of money who would be willing to invest in a sports franchise but probably not going to put money into the round ball game unfortunately.

Clive Palmer's failed experiment on the Gold Coast would spook his billionaire/multi millionaire friends on the Sunshine Coast.
