Welcome to the first instalment of the podcast! While we had some audio and technical issues, I hope you still enjoy the discussions.
Juniper League - that sounds interesting! Is that football followed by some sort of gin tasting afterwards?!?!?!I'm just having a listen.
What a fantastic achievement for G and G to produce this!
*From early on, one doesn't need to be obsessed with the UEFA Big Five. There are 30-40 odd clubs in the Eredivisie, Portugal, Juniper League, possibly Greece, are probably better than some mid-ranked and lower ranked Big Five. They consistently play in intra-continental UEFA comps in tournament style format. Every result is paramount. The likes of Ajax, Feyenoorde, PSV, Benfica, Porto, Sporting Lisbon, Anderlecht, Dinamo Zagreb, etc, play regular intra-continental UEFA match format games.
Belgian League top division!Juniper League - that sounds interesting! Is that football followed by some sort of gin tasting afterwards?!?!?!![]()
The Belgian top division is the Jupiler Pro League not to be confused with the Juniper (Berry) which is used to flavour gin.Belgian League top division!
Strange name in English! Have you listened to the podcast, Keeper?
Kramer on Seinfeld 'It's water next to a bridge'I love sayings said wrong. Never forget that the world is your lobster!
on the big 5 I think they have pulled ahead lately! Reckon there might be only half a dozen that are mid table big 5 standard and all in jupiler, eredivisie and portrugal.I'm just having a listen.

*The other point, and I've made it many times before, the GG achieved a lot at club level, but latterly struggled to qualify for WCs - often depending on 4 key games every 4 year cycle.
Good point about national team not being composed about specialist bench players. Also, about Garang Kuol's management.
Good questions posed and answered so far fellas! I'm at the 15 min mark and will return later. Hope I can fast forward.
thanks for the kind words! The three voices complement each other in the podcast. All are quite distinctively different.

Looking at club elo, avoiding relegation in the epl requires around 1700, in italy around 1600
Clubs above 1700
Benfica, sporting, porto, PSV, Feyenoord, Brugge, Galatasary
Clubs above 1600
braga, Ajax, Alkmaar, St Gillis, Anderlecht, Genk, Fenebarche, Slavia Praha, Sparta Praha, Celtic, Rangers, Olympiacos, Crvena Zvezda,
It definitely is a noticeable jump these days watching the big 5 compared to the next tier down.
On club performance v country, how much of that is being battle hardened in asia these days compared to prepping for one off games against battle hardened teams? Even taking that into account the GG's results are actually ok
Good results - away draw against iran, 2 home wins against uruguay, some good confed cup appearances, r16 in 2006, best round 3 world cup qualifying in asia under pim in terms of points per game
Bad results - how draw against iran, 2007 asian cup
After watching old roos matches I now think the correlation between club and country is really good, so long as you take into account different player profiles and how that works in a team. There are a couple of exceptions (curious if you would have the same exceptions, especially since I now rate viduka's national team performance highly in context of how the team system worked)
- emerton and chipperfields socceroos performances seemed underwhelming
- goodwin and milligans roos performance excede their club careers
Elo will rank mid and lower ranked big 5 clubs by looking at their results against clubs who do play in euro opposition and how those clubs do against them compared to European competitionInteresting?
The 1700 and 1600 clubs you mentioned are tested season in season out, by playing against teams outside their leagues in match scenarios - where a result in every home and away game is of paramount importance.
Am I correct in that mid-ranked and lower-ranked Big Five teams never play in intra- continental UEFA comps against other clubs?
How do you rank the mid and lower-ranked Big Five clubs who rarely play against clubs outside their leagues, compared to the 1600 and 1700 ELO ranked clubs who do?
Another issue is that in the English Championship, those clubs never play outside their own leagues against European opposition.
You all speak about the same speed - quite quickly - with a similar rhythm. A panellist with a slower tempo and different rhythm might be good, despite three distinctive accents.thanks for the kind words!

If anything elo flatters non big 5 countries slightly.
A team like Porto will more likely play their first xi in Europe and rotation players at home when there are mid week games. However big 5 clubs will more likely play their first xi in the domestic comp and rotate players in europe
Maybe incentives for Alex to join the forum! You all speak about the same speed - quite quickly - with a similar rhythm. A panellist with a slower tempo and different rhythm might be good, despite three distinctive accents.
Not sure if Alex can read this, but Geria after looking at comprehensive stats, has been our best player. Not a question of being a Popa favourite. Grazor thinks he might be better as a Right CB in a back three, than as a RB in back four. It may possibly be true, after looking at the AL.
Grazor - re McGree, IMO he is just holding this position. I think there are players, who are younger, who are gaining on him fast.
For Alex, Caceres won a lot of hard balls against Bahrain. More than Irvine or O'Neill. It is harding winning 1v1s against domestic Aussies in the AL.
Also, for Alex, Irvine was quite brilliant off the ball when I was analysing 1v1s. He does so much work in the 86 to 87 minutes when players don't have the ball.
Probably bad for football to be honest. I feel the dominance of euro powerhouses is hurting the global nature of the game. Argentina winning the world cup was a breath of fresh air after 2 decades of European dominanceInteresting?
