Mariners new ownership soon?

Brilliant analogy.

From memory this franchise was formed without an owner, and has since survived on the generosity of a few people who came and left.

So 20 years on and here we are, a franchise without an owner.

In addition, I also often wonder where SFC would be now without a Russian oligarch's money.
I think that if Sydney FC or another Sydney based franchise became available, the chances are that it wouldn't be too long before an individual or a consortium came along and purchased the franchise. Owning a sports franchise in a 'Premier League ' level world city like Sydney would be a very desirable place to be, regardless of whether the competition it plays in is popular or not......

The same would be true of Melbourne....When Vic-tor-ree eventually shits itself I'll guarantee that there's going to be someone who comes along and picks up the pieces.

And with Brisbane, the soon to be an Olympic City, even the most rubbish soccer franchise in the history of world, Brisbane Roar would be an interesting prospect.

But the CCM in lil'ol Gosford??

Yeah fair call.

Owning a football/basketball/whatever sporting franchise is no more than a fashion accessory for those with fuck you money.

That said, if the league falters and becomes a laughing stock (getting close) those big guys won't want to hang around and sully their reputation.

Your memory is worse than mine.

Turnbull was an owner/director at SFC for a few seasons before hooking up with CCM. And Gorman's $$ contribution was less than tuppence halfpenny.
You're right about Turnbull. But Gorman came up with the money on the day he was approached by Ian Kiernan - the day submissions had to be in. Without Gorman there would be no Mariners. TBH the spot was earmarked for Wollongong wolves - who refused to put in a bid. Didn't stop Les and Fozz complaining for years about the CCM inclusion over Wolves.

It should also be noted about from the original very minor shareholding the FFA held in each of the original clubs at the beginning CCM is the only original club that has never been financially supported by the FFA/FA.

some dodgy deals about around the route of the metro that now comes through Chatswood was done. It was originally slated to come through Parramatta
Just getting back to this one.

And central characters in this were Craig Thomson and the-then minister for infrastructure, transport, regional dev and local gov, Anthony Albanese.

Good point this. CFG also targeted a Sydney based team prior to Melbourne Heart becoming available.

Sydney is a very attractive investment destination for Europe based businesses.

No - it was a Liberal State government decision. The Football NSW COE was to be adjacent to the new Vineyard metro station before the Libs did their property developer mates bidding and changed the route and blew the cost out.

You previously mentioned dodgy deals. Who were the key players in these dodgy deals?

You seemed to be happy to name and slur Federal MPs without even realising that transport is essentially a state responsibility.

Eh?

Simple question. No need to go all political on me champ.

Big fan of convicted criminal Craig Thomson MP, I assume?

Not a fan - but let's get some facts out there. He was a local MP up here - though not in my electorate - so I did have some interest in his purported activities.

Thomson, while initially convicted on HSU expense breaches - has subsequently had the convictions overturned on appeal. This was on all charges relating to his time as an MP and prior.

The charges had more to do with Michael Wilkinson and Kathy Jackson and a power struggle in the HSU. Kathy Jackson, in particular was very vocal about accusing others of what you do. They are both convicted felons over the HSU affair. Craig Thompson is not. It is not surprising that you may think he is because as late as last years, years after he won his appeal the ABC in a piece on Kathy Jackson's whistleblower wrote
'
'In the year before she took the stage, Jackson had turned two of her union colleagues over to police — for using members' money to live the high life.

One, Michael Williamson, was a former Labor Party president and the other, Craig Thomson, was a government MP. Between them, the two union bosses had spent well over a million dollars of union funds on mortgage repayments, escorts and private school fees.'

Thomson has been convicted on a number of offences subsequent to his time as an MP.

Good to know but you still didn't reply to my question in reference to who exactly facilitated those "dodgy" deals you alluded to. Genuine question mate.

Since they haven't been charged I'm not going to. I could mention the others because they are a matter of public record.

Meanwhile Wellington have only had two owners and are doing it tough like the rest of the ALM clubs but they have never wanted to sell (Welnix) They just look for investors. With Auckland in the league now the game of pro football in NZ sponsor wise has increased this year, Unlike most A-League clubs.

There is alot of development going on in the immediate area of the stadium at Gosford ( which is good as the centre of Gosford is a shithole ) . Whomever has or hasn't got a new interest in the Mariners would be aware of the synergy involved here.

Something I remember from mid year was a new front of shirt sponsor called Polytec.

It must be the "Borg brothers" I'm guessing.

I suspect that is part of the deal, not necessarily 'property developers' though, Maybe others involved as well - but fairly re-assuring words from Charlesworth in the podcast.
