Matildas ‘over-achieved’ at 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup

An interesting stat that I've read that came out of the World Cup was the Matildas ran the most out of any team and that style usually is quite taxing for tournament football when up against ball playing sides like England and Spain who won the World Cup.

Did they over achieve based on their style? Probably yes.

Could they could do better with the squad that was available? Probably not but it's a good example how hard is to win playing a reactive style of football.
Could we imagine if they were a bit better at controlling the game with the ball then they have that extra energy off the ball for pressing or for rest defence.

Yes they could have but we'll never know.

They could have easily rotated players far more. Grant, Neven, Wheeler, Vine and Chidiac are players that either got bugger all playing time or none at all.

Only 2 subs vs Ireland. First at the 75th, second at the 85th.

First sub against Canada at the 75th after we were 3 nil up, 2nd at the 85th. (3 used altogether but the 3rd was in the 96th minute so say 2 subs in reality.)

First sub against Nigeria was Polkinghorne at the 82nd. When we were losing 3-1. (Only used 2.)

First sub against Denmark at the 80th minute. 2 subs then and 2 in time added on. (Barely worth counting the last 2 as actual subs.)

We were absolutely gassed against England and it showed.

Piss poor game management by the spud Gustavsson. Fuck him. Yes we probably weren't better than Spain or England but we blew a finals chance big time.

And don't start me on Arnold not coming off her line to squash England's second and Kerr missing from the 6 yard line.

yep we all agreed how much he mismanaged during the WC.
Way too late subs etcetc....anyway good riddance damage was done long before.

I saw some article somewhere yesterday or day before mentioning of Aloisi as a possible candidate ?!
 
I was of the understanding the players chose the coach. Now they're complaining about lack of a new appointment. You can never please this lot.

It's becoming very clear that the FA had no plan post Gustavsson and still have no clue or idea what they are doing now for his replacement. It's almost like they are just throwing a name out and seeing what sticks.

Yes agree and talking FA to date I have found JJ quite astute besides the many barriers that hold him in other parts of the game here But a tildas gaffa replacement you’d think he’d be all over this like a rash and some press leaks of suitable candidates or something but it’s all crickets which is puzzling considering the AC isn’t far off with the limited time to prepare considering always the difficulty of friendlies and geography for players.
I would think this is very very hot to lock someone up pronto.

Ross isn't even at Brisbane, he's assistant coach under Kevin Muscat at Chinese club Shanghai Port.

If it was one of the Aloisi brothers to be coaching the Matildas I'd take Ross, he was a women's coach (coached Adelaide United's women's team) at one stage.

John has never coached a women's team in his life, coached the old Melbourne Heart youth male team before successive stints with men's teams.

He has a 25% win rate with the womens team. Doesn't speak well. Even John has never had a rate higher than 42% in all of this stints.

Honestly, if the Aloisi brothers are the best we got, then we are in deep trouble.

This implies that the playing group still has too much power. Time for some hard headed coach to take charge, and given their penchant for throwing their coach under a bus, who with that CV would want to coach them? But don't forget, it's all the coach's fault!!!!

Personally if I were James Johnson I'd be on the blower to Joe Montemurro in France naming his asking price to lure him away from France and bring him home.

yep spot on, as much as I admire JA's playing career and bro was just a thug of a player neither suit the position whatsoever agreed.

I don't know what to believe anymore, the amount of crap reported, the wonder Matilda ticket ride has burst in any case.
Rankings slide now that was obviously going to happen so we all will listen from the sideline and see what becomes.
Both our NT's now are in recovery modes like mad.
