Honestly, I am fine with the current size. We don't really want random book people tbh. I'd prefer they are football fans, or at the very least sport fans. If they want to join they can but I could care less tbh
Most of us who have been on football forums for decades, know that if there isn’t continuous growth in forums, they seem to eventually contract.

TWGF, 442, IS all contracted.

Is Big Soccer or Whirlpool football increasing members, or Roar and Reddit?

Not sure why, but there always seems to be an attrition rate.

If we go back to the start of G and G, I am assuming some of the posters who joined early don’t post anymore? Or seldom post?

That is why forums seem to need to keep gaining new members - even if acquired slowly.

The main attractions on G and G for football fans may be the podcasts, Fan View articles and Aussies Abroad.

There is also the most traffic I’ve seen on a national forum for NPL football. Long may it continue!

Plus there is scope for Off Topic threads.

Don't forget this is primarily a football forum. Not everyone wants to read book reviews.
You’ve read them.

Not bad traffic there either. There are a greater number of avid book readers on G and G than I thought there would be.

And you made a good suggestion for me to read a new author in historical fiction. Much appreciated!

Yeah but honestly they didn't do what we are doing. Their forums look like they belong in the 80s, and we are continually adding new content (podcast, fan view, shouts etc.). As long as we move with the times we will be alright

442s mistake is they wanted to profit off football in oz which is very hard. Our currency is fan passion which so far seems more sustainable

We have a really fun community so not worried about growing

But i suspect we are growing anyway?

True.

Shouts? Haven't really viewed this section?

IMO this is the best football forum in Aus's history since I first looked at the TWGF in 2005/6.

Another good feature of G and G is women's football IMO. We now have RF giving updates on female Aussies Abroad, which are interesting for mine. The next step is to entice more female football fans, players and coaches to G and G.

Just had a look at Shouts.

I'm not really into tipping, but a lot of people are! Great idea! This should induce more participation.

Pasquali, Mono, Keeper and Ashtongate have all thumbed up, that G and G is essentially a football forum. I agree. However, with one proposal to entice more members to G and G, which P isn't interested in pursuing, I don't have a lot of ideas about how to induce more football fans?

Mono, possibly through his South M mates doing the podcast, appears to have enticed a lot of South Melb fans to G and G. This is really good!

The next step is to get the likes of other bigger NPL clubs like Sydney United, Melbourne Knights, Marconi, South Hobart, Brisbane Strikers fans en masse to G and G. Who has links?

Ditto more of the AL fan forums could be recruited.

In the meantime the Bookreading thread is the second most responded to thread in the Off Topic section, and the Cricket thread is possibly the most popular thread in the Other Sports. Is this 'bad' for G and G?

D, I am NO betting type person, I'd sooner eat and drink my hard earned than playing pokies or any type of gambling.
I really don't get people get some kind of thrill out of it.
Shouts is make believe gambling/tipping - plain harmless fun I'm in.
Just give the next one a go for the heck, participate.

FOOTBALL fans... who also happen to read books.... NOT the other way around.

I havent "enticed" anyone to join, much less even mentioned it (except in a very casual way) to anyone at Lakeside....I don't even 100% know who any of the South fans on this forum are in real life, although I suspect who a few are based on their character and comments..... this ISNT real life Decentric... this is a pastime....

Each to their own, LFC.

Off forum I'm constantly lobbied/urged to join pursuits/pastimes, politically and socially, by others, who don't realise they never, ever reciprocate. Ha Ha!

I'm not into gaming, quiz nights, card nights, bus travel excursions, writing copious letters to Letters To Editors, tipping comps, fancy dress at parties ( used to be when I was younger), attending T20 franchise cricket matches, copious internal group online Slack convos in pressure groups as opposed to meeting in person, watching mates' mediocre music bands perform ( whilst a younger gen of whiz musicians have completely superseded them), etc.

At the same time I recognise that others derive enormous pleasure from these pursuits.

Many of these mates and political comrades aren't into my penchant for demos, watching whiz gen jazz and improvised music live, craft beer drinking/tasting sessions at breweries, meeting in person in pressure groups ( not Slack or Signal like Millennials), talking about football and cricket whilst drinking craft beer, attending live football and cricket matches, as diverse an interest in some progressive just causes as me, (focusing on 1 or 2), discussions about gym exercise routines and pursuing them, travel recounts, etc.

Most Millennials just don't relax enough and have a few drinks! Many are stressed by face to face socialising, whilst putting on a brave face! They are used to socialising via screens! They even date by using screens and phones! They know how to vote at elections though.

Tipping is wonderful in that so many people love doing it, but I just can't get excited about it. I think Shouts is a terrific acquisition for G and G and many will love it, but I'm beastly careless. At the same time I enjoy others having fun participating in Shouts. I'm sure there will be many more takers.

No wonder you iron haha

political comrades, enthralling but each to their own.

sign of the times, if you have kids your more on the pulse supporting them than criticising, as much as I grew up without tech and all you have to embrace whats going on. SM Influence run elections today. Most don't give a toss but what pops up from their tiktok etc.

I mentioned it doesn't excite me also re tipping etc I'm just getting amongst the team contributing to GG instead of being on the bench.

Storm in a tea cup here I think.

If anyone wants to encourage participants who are willing to have reasonable discussions then all good. If they are not a good fit and move on, or if they find it enjoyable/meaningful and stay, then that is a decent growth system in itself.

For the tipping Decentric - I have never been more involved in weekly sport that I otherwise wouldn't have been than when I was involved in tipping. It makes you have a horse in every race and it is surprising how much your casual tips peak your interest ;) and make you look for and hope for results that wouldn't have meant a damn thing to you normally.

The flipside is it kills you when your tipped team is playing a team you prefer. you can tell yourself that you win either way but it still feels like you are losing out. With the Shouts, someone else does all the work (acknowledged thank you tipmasters) and all you do is click radio buttons once a week to lock them in. Quicker than tying velcro shoes on!

I have no interest in running a recruitment campaign, but I have happily mentioned the forum to a few football acquaintances (family, friends, other people who I talk to occasionally about football). Up to them what they do with the information.

Time for you to get cracking and recruit some football fans to G and G, Ashtongate.

You’ve had a lot to say about not recruiting cricket and bookreading fans to G and G, some who may have a modicum of interest in football.

Who have you tried to recruit to G and G?

Do you agree the forum needs more members?
I couldn't care less if we get lots of new members or not.
Why are you obsessed with this?
Sounds like you've got a messiah complex or something.

Yeah it's unnecessary. We currently rank high on google search results for many Australian football searches (#1 for "socceroo forum" etc.). Let the right people find us. If not though who cares really. The main thing was to keep the community in tact after Insidesport died
