MLS

It'd be a daft move imho. The MLS has the same issue the AL has. They'd be going up against three of the Big Four (NFL, NBA and NHL) and the UFL (the second tier American football competition) and in the case of teams like Seattle the ground would terrible as they'll have NFL games being played on it.

so its taken since '96 to finally consider a Div 1 below MLS, fast work :)
I suppose we will longer here haha

No matey, the big news is that their equivalent to our Australian Championship will now by EQUAL with MLS.:

The league, which is targeting a debut between 2027 and 2028, would hold Division I sanctioning from US Soccer — the same competitive level as Major League Soccer.

I'm curious as to how that will work, with two "first divisions" in the one country, and presumably no crossover between them. Is there a precedent for this anywhere else in the world? I'm surprised FIFA condone it.

India had two "first divisions" for a couple of years I believe? It just means that a league is granted 1st divison status in order for teams from that league to grain entry to continental tournaments like CONCAF and AFC etc... US has had a multi tiered league subsystem for ages, only difference now is that MLS will be having to share the top spot with UCL Championship....

In US the requirements for divisions are set by the federation. As long as you meet the criteria you should get approved.

The federation has been fairly lenient with bending these as well for certain leagues - at least temporarily. USL might need leniency on the 15k stadium D1 requirement - but general feeling is they will get it (provided they show they can be economically sustainable - which is the spirit of the requirement).

D1
Number of teams: 12 (Year 3: 14)
Geographic coverage: Eastern, Central, and Pacific time zones
Market population: >75% with >1mil
Stadium capacity: 15,000
Lease lead: 180 days
Bond: $1 mil
Time guarantee: 5 years
Primary owner worth: $40 mil

Cheers for the info.

What happens to "geographic coverage" if the UCL does implement pro rel as advertised and the "wrong" clubs get relegated?

Its a very good point - there is going to have to be an allowance (or change to criteria) there in case all time-zone teams get relegated.

Another geographic consideration is that travel costs could change significantly. If all Division 3 Pacific time zone teams get promoted except one - travel costs for that remaining team would balloon. Not sure if USL might opt for "regionalization" down the pyramid like England to address this (but if so - they will need more teams for each time zone).

Will be interesting to see it play out.
