Official South Melbourne Hellas thread 🔵⚪

A winning team that plays good football with good individual players on show would lift our crowds to the 1,000 mark give or take with significantly more interest in derbies on top of that. Unfortunately i dont see it, Avondale and Heidelberg are so far ahead of us it would be more them imploding rather than us catching them.

The championship and heidelbergs involvement in it makes the JA situation very difficult. We should have got him 2 years ago but chose to stick with the bloke that lost 2 grand finals 9-0.
No doubt the JA debacle 2 yrs ago for $20k doesnt reflect well on the board and rightly so! Given the current reality though its not at all beneficial to get cought up on a pipe dream like that ATM!

Abive all w are in need a manager that can complement the key players we already have and play to their strengths with a solid budget to then focus funds on adding an abundence of quality to that to raise the bar. JA football is great but we have limited players currently that can fit that style (especially defensively he will cut 3 out of the 4 at the first training session on speed alone)... he would require a massive overhaul of the entire playing roster IMO and this is just not feasible unless you have a season of NPL to do it!

This step up can happen with other options, if you are paying market value then you can attract similar or even better managers (big IF though)! Coaches like Aloisi is a prime example or even Veart (now at the joeys), coaches focused on youth and with solid experience who above all are aware of the histories of the foundation clubs and have a good standing in football still which all adds to the needed buzz required for traction..

Tell me an announcement of say Aloisi, and 3 fornaroli type additions wouldnt work wonders on crowds as well as on field success?

We need to nail our visa signings to ensure that we're able to play football of that quality... we all love Nahuel but we need a few more players with that level of technical skill in the squad
Heidelburg for instance have players from J1, Eredevise and the Belgian first div - hard to compete when we're signing guys from Eastern Lions and the Danish sixth division! (aware that Ren's been decent until the last few weeks)

To briefly summarise today's discussion based on last night's brothel:
-Spink, Menelaou, Dovison and Ren to stay.
-Sinisa will coach in Championship, but should be looking to poach JA. (Very unlikely to near impossible IMO but would love it if it happened).
-Board must do more evidentally on the pitch and off it. Us regulars who will stick through anything deserve more than what we've copped the last 10 years.
-Big name signing, preferably a number 9 that can help draw crowds and for October. Midfield reinforcements desperately needed.

Dont need to preach to anyone hear about sticking by the club, but through the good, bad, disrespect and ugly SOUTH MELBOURNE HELLAS FOREVER!
Completely agree mate. Would you be keen on Fornaroli?

@ Top monthly contributor 🥱 I went back through all of my (13) posts on this thread and I have never mentioned “Greece” or “Greek”.
Don't be so salty... you can contribute as much or as little as you like.... I too went back to my post and made NO mention of "this thread"..
Its just a little tedious after a while don't you think??

Adding to the off the park dilemma, I strongly believe our biggest issue is the younger generations support of the club. I'd honestly at this rate give us 10 years and yesterdays attendance could be the norm the way things are going. A strategy or plan to get more young people invested and throwing their support around the club is a must and we see this once or twice a year during our big games, but it never goes beyond that. Naturally this is a flow on effect of how the team is playing, however we need a strong core of next gen fans coming through that will stick around no matter what. Gonna be a very tough task but hope im proven wrong and this Championship can spark interest across all age groups and demographics.
Mate I get what you are saying but this past few seasons the juniors really DO get into the swing of things... Im even seeing dads bring their kids to the ground at a younger and younger age... My take is that we need to get the "kids" of the older generation back to their old club first, and they/we in turn will bring our kids.....

This isn't just a South Melbourne problem, it's a football problem across the country. Not trying to be disrespectful but you guys play in the npl, not many know about you or anyone in the npl, even the a league is struggling, many younger kids prefer to follow the stars from overseas and the English Premier league.

I wish there was something we could do to make the npl more popular for the youths but im afraid we're going to lose this battle.
TBF this was ALWAYS the same challenge whether we are in NSL or NPL.... "eurosnobs" isnt a new thing, even if the Aleaguers think that they invented the genre...

I dont get the appeal to be honest.. Avondale are a "collection" of galacticos and Bergers are just ultra physical and fit.... Playing attractive football certainly hasnt done anything for their attendances... and while it may effect ours a bit, we could be playing like an EPL club next year and STILL won't move the needle too much on crowds "stuck in the farkin NPL"

Agree mate, thats my point.. JA isn't some miracle solution.... or CT like others say..... its a systemic issue NOT just a squad/coach one.

I LIKE the direction Sisi is taking us, now its just up to the balcony brothers to back him in ... or replace with BETTER not just sideways, but BETTER.

Personally no, however a signing of a similar calibre absolutely. He's not a visa player either which would also help the cause lol
He's more Aussie than Triantis, Volpato and that other Croatian kid apparently so yeah at least we dont have to give up a visa spot.... lol

Could we just get Bruno for the championship? I mean its 6 games + whatever if we advance, im sure he would want to be part of it. If he lights it up we explore having him for 2026.

I did think he was a year younger, he will be 38 when it starts. The only success we've had with a player that age was Coveny.
