Pavlešić joining Croatia

This is a big blow especially with our goal keeping stocks, are there any other prospects we don’t know about? I feel the goal keeping talent isn’t as strong as it used to be.

Should of been a 3rd choice in one of squads already. Stupid move from Australia.

Just hope Nestory doesnt get the same idea

All this means is he wants to represent Croatia underages instead of travel for Australia underage. What this means for Australia senior team is still yet to be determined imo

Oh look and now his stocks have just risen immensely. So far he's been wasting away in Bayern reserves with very few minutes. Now slap a Croatia flag on his profile and ex Bayern player Olic vouching for him and he's all the next big thing.

While he has plenty of potential, it's certainly not at Bayern as they've got so many keepers and just bought Urbig.

This is bad though as he's played for Australia at every youth level so far.

hopefully he comes back to the australian team but it is interesting we lose a high proportion of croatians than other nationalities

Hopefully hall, beach and peraic cullen come good

not true. he will have to file one-time switch ruling him out of playing for us at senior level

What does this mean? I didn't think it mattered unless he got capped at senior level in an 'official' international.

if you have played competition games (asian cup, world cup, qualification games) for one national team at either youth or senior level then to switch to another country you now have to file a one-time switch. once you file a one-time switch, you are locked into that country forever. pavlešić will never be able to play for australia once his one-time switch is processed.

Wow. Is that new?

Yep he gets one chance to swap and that's it. He's Croatian now. Good work FFA.

Wow. Is that new?
Yes, introduced a few years ago. Some relevant info based on this for our key dual nationals:

Volpato - will need to file one-time switch to play for us
Robertson - *won't* need to file one-time switch to play for England, Peru, Scotland due to not having ever played a competitive game
Skoko - will need to file one-time switch to play for us
Arena - will need to file one-time switch to play for us
Treffiletti - can play for Italy without one-time switch
Scicluna - will need to file one-time switch to play for us
G. Okon - can play for Belgium, Cuba, Italy without one time switch
Overy - only played friendlies for Scotland, can play for us without one-time switch

The new eligibility rules build on the foundation of the rules that had already been in place prior to September 2020.

So, the basis of the eligibility rules is effectively the same, but there have been a number of clarifications and some additional insertions.

In particular, FIFA has added three new exceptions whereby a player may change the national team they play for.

First, it is now possible for a player to change national team even if they have played competitively at senior level, provided:

  1. the player held the nationality of their new association at the time of their first official appearance for their first national team.
  2. the player played in no more than three competitive senior games before the age of 21.
  3. the player has not played in the final stage of an official tournament such as the World Cup, European Championship, Copa America etc.
  4. at least three years have passed since the player's last senior appearance for their previous national team.
So, a player who is eligible for England and Republic of Ireland could, for the sake of argument, play for England in three World Cup 2022 qualification games, then represent Ireland at the 2026 World Cup. The opposite - playing at a World Cup then switching - is not permitted.

Second, a player can now change to a new national team even if they did not hold that nationality at the time of their first appearance for their old national team, as long as they last played for the old national team before the age of 21.

It should be noted that there is an exception underpinned by the principle of legal certainty, whereby the age limit of 21 does not apply to players who played their last match for their old national team prior to September 18, 2020, when the new rules were introduced. This exception explains why Aymeric Laporte, who played for France Under-21s at the age of 21 in 2016, is permitted to switch to Spain.

Finally, a competitive cap will not keep a player tied to a national team in the event that they suddenly become stateless - that is, lose their nationality - against their will.

So I am confused. My reading of the above says he can play up to 3 games for the Croatian senior team (assuming non Euro or world cup games) prior to age 21 and still play for Australia. He was born 31 January 2006, so he's turning 21 in January 2027, so not too far away. Is that correct? Am I missing something?
