Ryan Reynolds-owned Wrexham set to face Melbourne Victory

guessing its marvel stadium due to the doco's/Ryan Reynolds link with Disney?

Unless the tickets are super cheap, Marvel would be hard to fill. When Celtic played MV at AAMI, they got 20k and Wrexham is quite a few rungs below Celtic.
It's a bit of an odd one. When a big EPL club comes here, fans get excited at the opportunity to see some proper big name players live. It's rarely a great performance, but for many people they'll never get to see them play otherwise. With Wrexham, the appeal has nothing to do with the players, it's all based on the TV show and owners. How much are people going to pay to see Van Wilder and Mac wave to the crowd before the game followed by a very average game of football?

don't underestimate the value of Hollywood hype in this country

its an incredibly shallow culture

Partially agree with most of what’s been written here. BUT, Wrexham are currently 2nd in League One and the top two teams are automatically promoted to the Championship. At the very least they will be in the playoffs. Wrexham toured the US in 2024 and didn’t even play MLS teams apart from Vancouver, they played two other matches against Bournemouth and Chelsea. In 2023, they toured the US and played Man United, Chelsea, LA Galaxy, and Philadelphia and got crowds. There’s also a lot of people that have watched Netflix’s “Welcome to Wrexham”. Yes, it’s all about money, but if Wrexham playing in Aus means less AFL and NRL coverage, I’m all for it.

fair enough point... I am fairly certain being at Marvel it WILL become an AFL propaganda drive, but if it helps 3 or 4 kids watch a game of football, even by mistake it might be worthwhile.

people in this country know football exists.. its not a publicity problem
its one of the most played games here

the majority of the general public however have no interest in the Z grade standard of what's on offer as a spectator sport and this will never change for as long as Australia exists at the arse end of the planet

What do you proposed, they move Australia to Europe & drop the ral & call it Austria, we cannot help our geo position. DUH!!!!

I just can't stand Wrexham. Way too much Hollywood. Birmingham the same. I get that clubs needs financial stability but the way Wrexham have simply bought their way through doesn't sit with me compared to others who have to grind that bit more.

Carlisle though have the highest paid squad in L2 and new owners to balance the books and they're dead last and definitely going down.

On a related matter, Spurs Arsenal in HK this off season. Aren't they tired after skipping those cup replays?

No real backlash from my tbh I just find it a little cringy that a couple of thousand (at best) people will throng to a huge stadium dressed as superheroes to sit bored through 90s mins of a sport they have no interest in just for the chance to get a glimpse of an actor ... Horses for courses I suppose.

Yeah Docklands probably won't be the best choice, but I gather that's a request from the Disney club?

Seriously HG,
For starters IDGAF BUT friendlies etc are not really helping our game here but for the sugar $ hit at the time of this occurring.
Do you really think the "casuals" who will attend this game will turn into AL supporters let alone the game ? ofcourse not.
They'll be there in HOPE to see Reynolds/his partner whatever his name is and just be there for another promotional friggin night for a outing thats it period !
Oh all the wrong time for the game to get some headlines, off season yaddayadda but that its a Club funded by hollywood actors that will get the press - oh probably the token sherrin pics as well yet some here will go isn't this good for the game lol.....
We know it happens world over but it really is nothing to right home about here for we have NEVER capitilised on any good exposure incl our WC runs.

I'm not really sure what you're expecting from a preseason friendly.

If two men and a dog show up, great. If Victory receive a fee, great. If there's a little attention during preseason, great.

Just to reiterate, it's a preseason friendly.
