So noticed the tottenham forum has a player ratings thread whereby ppl post their player ratings after each game and then someone tallies them up and shows the averages.

So figured I start this, starting this last match (China v Australia 25/3/2025).

China v Australia 25/03/25

Using the football manager rating system, each player starts at 6, a positive contribution eg goal, assist, preassist, or overall good play pushes the player up 1 point, and a negative contribution eg mistake leading to goal, missed pen, pen conceded, overall bad play pushes the player down 1.

Ryan 8 - shot stopping was largely untested but commanded his box well from several crosses especially as many Chinese players were crowding him out.
Geria 8 - dominated his opponent both in the air and on the ground in strength and speed wise dispossessing him throughout. Played several line breaking passes forward that generally stuck.
Degenek 6 - played as the sweeper, was fairly solid throughout except for 2 simultaneous brain fades in 2nd half.
Burgess 7 - largely solid as usual.
Miller 8 - thought his best roos performance. Got up and down very well, generally dominated his opponent off the ball and on the ball drove past him on several occasions and delivered a couple of nice balls. Could have even bumped up to a 9, my BOG
Irvine 8 - great finish for his goal after dogged determination to drive into the box and keep the ball from his opponent. Solid throughout and his leadership shines through. Gets better with age.
Teague 7 - great debut, very classy on the ball and effective at breaking up opposition attacks. If anything the step up in level suited him with better players around him.
Behich 7 - was solid, made great decisions as he always does, was tidy with the ball and a mongruel off it.
Boyle 7 - drove at the opponent well, after a couple of sloppy touches early on. Seems to have regained his pace and sharpness a little. Put in a few good crosses including the one that lead to Nishans goal.
Nishan 8 - one of Popa's favourites, seems at home in this system, presses exceptionally well off the ball especially in tandem with borrelo and is effective with it always making an option for Behich out wide and coming into the box when the ball comes in the right flank. Not a sweetly struck shot, but kept the ball down well for the goal.
Borello 7 - pressed very well together with nish and made good early runs off the ball whenever we regained possession. Solid whilst not spectacular.

Subs -
Duke 6 - little involvement
Arzani 6 - ditto
Karacic 6 - locked things down well but generally ineffectual when we had the ball.
Caceres 5 - anonymous whilst he was out there

Popa 8 - typical Popa performance.. Picked an underwhelming team on paper but made it function well. Managed the game out very well.

Mainly agree with both posters ratings which have a few minor differences. Not sure why Rowles given a 5 for the Indonesia game-I would have at least given him a 6.5

gave away a penalty and noticed a couple of other mistakes from him. He was rarely someone we played out through either so there wasn't the positives to make up for that mistake unlike burgess and geria

The penalty was soft and Rowles had to come across to cover for Burgess's error with the bouncing ball. Also we played out more down the right side as Miller ,Boyle and even Velupillay tend to work better down the right side.

Ratings tonight

Ryan 7: Kubo beat him but otherwise a solid game

Miller 5: Looked outclassed in nearly every area. Just couldn't get into the game. One or two good duels.

Circati 8: Excellent display shadowing his men. Passing alright. Tears post match is exactly what we want from players!

Degenek 9: Absolute rock and astute. Replay will show how many balls he won.

Burgess 7: Tidy enough evening. Got passed once or twice but cover was behind him

Behich 6: The goal saves him but another woeful display of backpassing, being rounded and lack of composure given his experience. Congrats on the goal but it's time to turn that passion into quality play or motivate others from the bench.

O'Neill 5: Seemingly anonymous

Teague 5: One or two firm balls and I wish he'd gotten more time.

Boyle 4: Nowhere tonight

Metcalfe 6: Mostly wayward balls but some closer link up play. He tracked his men well and kept the shape. Definitely needs another run against Saudi to get involved.

Borrello 5: Alone up top with a rare good press. Really got to move on from him.

Geria 6.5: Very tidy display and a killer ball to McGree

McGree 6.5: 2 moments, the turn assist and just before the shoulder down their end to win the ball and prevent and attack. One or two firm balls. More space in other games will benefit him.

Yazbek 6.5: First 2 min of 2nd half firm and tidy. More involved and there's definitely something there. The case study is against any opponent that presses less.

Duke 6.5: Did the job of slowing it up but annoyingly should've passed instead of milking fouls. Better at pressing.

Arzani 5.5: Late throw wins and touches to close out. Gave ball away once frustratingly

Will rate before and after the replay, but for now

Ryan - 7 good sweeping and distribution without being spectacular and didn't have to produce any saves of note

Circati 9 one scuffed clearance that cost a corner the only blemish on an awesome night in defense. Needed to be a touch more precise with some of his long passes but his defense was enormous
Burgess 9 A tower at the back and seems to have lost the little mistakes that cost us early in the campaign
Degenek 8 Didn't notice him so probably decent?

Miller 8 lost the silly mistakes at the back but struggled to bullock in possession and create
Behich 9 got iced once near the byline and gave up easily but otherwise solid in defense and scored the winner

Teague 7 seemed to lose a lot of duals and struggled a bit to win the ball and impose himself
O'niell 7 one promising run forward but struggled to win enough balls and impose himself

Metcalf 8 two hard chances he got there abouts, beast off the ball, a little quiet on it
Boyle 6 bad decision cost the best chance of the first half and looked quiet off the ball and on it

Borrello 6 weak press and struggled to hold the ball up

Yazbek 8 Made a big difference live I thought, slight improvement off the ball and big improvement on it
Mcgree 9 got the assist and was a bit of a nuisance throughout
Duke 8 better press and won some clever fouls. Still struggled to hold the ball up
Arzani 6 Seemed a bit quiet and struggled to impose himself
Geria 7 seemed to be a bit more vulnerable down his side when miller came off if I recall correctly (bit of a blur) but I thought he was also involved in the build up to our rare attacks

Pretty fair assessment of all.... almost universally agree with this, well said.

@Grazor, nice summary. Your Burgess description could match Degenek too. A good replay watch ahead how the back 3 actually battled really well.

Just again we couldn't hold the ball. Many moments where we actually had space and position but were too slow.

Graz, Miller 8 ?

JS I ain't going to watch a replay whatsoever.

He was ripped most of 1st half to me.
Thank christ 68min Geria replaced him.
JS gave him 5, so would I.

Will be curious to see if i change my mind after the replay. I felt pretty safe apart from one moment the whole match

even my team chat group couldn't wait till he was replaced, they nickname him the donkey just came out of long bay.

Japans best in the first half came from targeting Miller. I think we were lucky the Japanese player was fluffing his crosses and shots because he was skinning Miller. I thought Miller was poor in duels, lost a lot. He also didn't get forward this game. 5, maybe a 6 if generous imo.

First half moments

1:03: Japan pass right to Boyle who goes to Borrello and a heavy first touch loses it.

1:29: Circati clears first time which was fine. Interesting to note the space our defence and midfield have if he taps it to his left. 5 blue shirts close to the wing and 5 gold more central

2:00 O'Neill not goal side and Miller gets rounded.

4:17 The standard Japan diagonal run. Two players get behind O'Neill and Teague who are blind to the threat that ultimately isn't served. Circati had it covered.

5:00 Miller takes a bobbling interception and loses it. Japan thread it down the wing and O'Neill is outpaced. Had Miller been more aware he could have squared it first time to O'Neill in plenty of space. Ryan gathers and we slow it taking a full 25 seconds to win a throw further up.

5:23: Nice tackle by O'Neill but Miller takes too many touches and is dispossessed and Japan can run down the wing.

11:06 Some headers near Japan box. Borrello weakly steals ball but needs to nudge it away there to keep possession.

11:30: Good tackle by Behich to stifle an attack. Possession at time 86% for Japan.

12:30 Fine long ball down wing by Circati. Intercepted and Boyle with back to goal.

13:52 A good first time header by Teague but Borrello's first touch is terrible. Metcalfe was so free just to the left in space. Australia get ball again with a nice Metcalfe layoff t Behich whose wing ball is intercepted . Japan shape means Teague can't help.

16:40 Better with Australia completing 4 key line breaking passes in succession. The quick Metcalfe curve pass is intercepted. This is where rushing is wrong. O'Neill was sprinting through and a slight pause sees him thread it to O'Neill in a gap or he stops while scrambling Japan overrun and the has time to square it to Teague. The ensuing Japan clearance is actually first timed forward by Circati's left and goes straight to them. trap it and edge forward and there are options. Next play sees Japan breaking rounding Behich, Burgess blocks and Teague runs it out for a throw.

19:07 Excellent long throw by Miller to Boyle in space. Bounces twice and he gets tackled 25m from goal. So much space on the left but Behich is sitting deep in Bunbury. Having wingbacks he should be way up there and Boyle can thread it left.

20:22 Nice goal kick headed on by Miller and Boyle stupidly heads downwards when a first lob over would see Borrello in a chase.

21:20 Nice quick distribution by Ryan. O'Neill too slow and takes Teague who passes back when an easy diagonal ball sees Metcalfe with plenty of room. Metcalfe showing is hands how free he is.

22:00 Kamada screaming he's free in midfield. Lucky they didn't thread it to him.

27:46: After a decent period of pressing by Australia a through ball skins O'Neill and Japan run long and miss.

30:41 Good tackle by Circati then Australia can string a number of passes together. Gets to Behich who goes backwards then O'Neill too but a foul is won and the free kick leads to a corner. Metcalfe heads wide.

32:30 Good long run by O'Neill. Needed to pass at some point but much more direct.

36:14 Good throw tackle by Miller. Back pass is fine but more skill and he threads it across to Metcalfe in space. Ensuing play sees Burgess intercept but then heavy touch run forward giving Japan the ball in a dangerous area and Japan shoot wide.

41:48 Miller too many touches and loses it seeing Degenek with a great sliding tackle.

Just wondering in a positive way what Miller's attributes are: height, physicality, athleticism, youth. On the downside, he does not have great ball skills and certainly not to the Japanese level or even Geria level. So if his role was not to create play but to draw play to him and grind out a half, then he did that well. It also helps, that the Japanese team are not divers so the physicality did not draw contentious fouls.
When Geria replaced him, who is much older, the Japanese left side (Socceroos right side) were slower because they were tired.
So, I am wondering whether Miller would start in the same position against Saudi who are known divers.

At NT level today this is A MUST and to have a player as such there is ridiculous imo and says alot what we have at our disposal in selections. Bos eats him for breakfast.
Weak link full stop period.
