Summer of Cricket thread

At the end of the second day's playing the Shield Tas v NSW.

Tas 1-85 in second innings. 230 in front for the loss of 1 wicket.

Webster took 5 wickets. He bowled as well as I've seen him bowl. All the Tasmanian pace bowlers, all Tas born, Meredith, Bell, Webster and O'Connor, bowled well as a unit.

Meredith at last hit top speed. I thought he was bowling within himself at 130-135 kph, plus the 5 kph not showing on the Tas speed gun. Then he bowled some of the quickest bouncers seen at Bellerive - 147 and 148 kph, plus the 5 kph. The second resulting in a wicket. H e took 3 poles.

18 yo old O'Connor has added 5 kph, up to 131 kph ( plus 5kph) - no t bad for an 18 yo old all rounder! They were naggingly accurate. Dwarshuis batting at 9, was best Blues batter, scoring 40.

Kuhnemann struggled a bit.

All Tas pace bowlers were very smooth - none grunted, compared to the NSW pacemen, who seemed to put a lot of physical effort into their balls.

Webster extracted seam and swing. He bowled first change and bowled long spells, which Mitch Marsh and Cam Green can't.

Weatherald hammered the Blues attack. Sadly, the speed gun wasn't working, because I have a theory that Abbott lacks stamina, and reduces his pace and efficacy as red ball games progress. He is a superb new ball bowler.

Tas v NSW at Bellerive in the Shield. Last game for the season.

Tas 7 - 307 at stumps. Watched every ball. Silk's best innings for some time in his 100th Shield game. He was about 90 NO at stumps.

Owen dropped.

Webster surprisingly struggled batting at dusk, for 15, batting with the lights on in a day/night Shield game.

Jewell hammed the Blues for 45 runs off 42 balls batting at 4. Doran scored quickly for a 39. O'Connor scored quickly too. The rest batted slowly and had slow SRates. Big total for Ward, who battled hard without ever getting on top of the NSW attack.

Abbott bowled superbly with the new ball for NSW. Lost about 6 kph of pace as the day progressed. His fastest ball was 136 kph, but I think the speed gun is reading about 5- 6kph too slow. I think he took 4 deserved wickets.

Left armer Dwarshuis bowled up to 137kph. Bowled some good balls.

Massive effort from the massively built Edwards, achieving little pace, but he generated great lift from the pitch. He is a huge man! Usually bowled in low 120kph, but one ball reached 130 kph.

Sanga, has a quick run up for a wristy, and is quick through the air.

Bird effective, naggingly accurate, bowling good balls with a bit of swing and seam at 119 -125 kph.
Other than Bird this is not a FG standard Blues attack. The loss of Chris Tremain for the season is a big blow. And what has Nesbitt done wrong. Surely there is also a better lefty in Seconds than Dwarshuis. Sangha may come into his own in the sec inn. Poor selections and in a vital must win game. This is the reason I have switched my alegience totally to the Tigers DC.

Owen dropped. A scapegoat. The batsmen are to blame for Tassie not being a chance for the title this year. Not this emerging all rounder.

Tassie has an even better emerging 18 yo all rounder, Launceston boy, O'Connor!

He has opened the bowling attack. O'Connor has a beautiful smooth action, bowling up to 136 kph, bowling good line and length, plus getting a bit of swing in the air and seam off the pitch.

Decent batter too - who keeps the ball on the ground as opposed to Owen's extravagant lofted big hitting game. O'Connor already has a Shield 50.

A great third day's cricket.

Tas flogged NSW for 4 - 370 odd declared, setting NSW 520 to win. NSW gave up in the field on an increasingly flatter pitch.

However, Test tyro Konstas, played some superb shots, to have NSW 0-71 under lights in the last hour.

Tas waited till Jewell scored his 100 off only 146 balls, then declared. Great knock at number 4 after 45 off 42 balls in the first dig for the Tassie born strokemaker.

He, and other lefties, Weatherald and Ward, played some scintillating off drives, cover drives off the pace bowlers, and some powerful cuts off the spinners. Silk batted well too, scoring another 50 or 60 odd.

Webster has struggled batting under lights, but has bowled superbly.

Really take my hat off to Konstas and Nikitaris, after a long day in the field, hitting many edges, and surviving many balls that beat the outside edge of the bat that that went to the keeper, and copping heaps of LBW appeals.

Konstas - stylish off drives, cover drives and straight drives. He looks to me to be the best young Aussie bat to play at Bellerive in the Shield against Tas, or for Aus A, since Pukovski and Green emerged.

Speed demon, Riley Meredith, bowled express today - balls over 150 kph! The smack hitting Doran's gloves standing a long way behind the stumps, and the smack hitting the middle of the bat, were very loud. Nikitaras, copped a brute of a Meredith ball into his back, as he turned away from a nasty, short, rising delivery. This was easily the fastest spell of bowling in the Shield this season from Meredith - and much quicker than anyone else. The next quickest has been Dwarshuis at 141 - 142 kph.

If Konstas gets going, I think NSW can score the runs to win.

Not quite. A good 68 but not the big 100 his team needed. Was pleased to see the 19 year old dump the reckless play for patience in his last two matches. Agree he is the best since Pucovski.

Tassie just too good on their home track DC with bat and the pink ball. The Blues lacked the balls needed to put score board pressure out of mind in order to make the final. Most disappointed with Kurtis Patterson throwing away his wicket cheaply after a fab season.

The NSW openers performed well under massive scoreboard pressure in that opening stand under lights.

114 is a decent partnership, but there was little support afterwards from the rest of the NSW batters.

Thought Patterson's 0 was a poor effort too.

Kuhnemann took a 5 wicket bag in the second innings. Tasmania resounding victors at home with the pink ball.

Tas had 3 wins for the season and finished 3rd to 5th depending on other results. Tas played poorly against West A and South A.

Three centurions for Tas in the game - Weatherald, Jewell and Silk.

Jewell, usually an opener, was dropped for most of the season. His fast scoring at number 4, with 45 off 42 balls in the first innings, and his unbeaten ton in the second with a strike rate of 67, were decisive knocks. The only problem is Tas has 4 left handed batters in the top 4.

Weatherald has had a very good season. The recruitment of Kuhnemann and the all round skill set of Webster have been other notable achievements for the Tas season.

Owen has great talent, but needs to adjust his batting to red ball game, whilst 18 yo old all rounder, O'Connor, has been a terrific addition. He opened the bowling attack.

I thought Abbott was superb early in the first innings, but ran out of gas. Expected more from NSW wristy, Sanga.
