Sydney vs Sanfrecce Hiroshima - 7 Nov 2024 - ACL 2 Matchday 4

I reckon Quintal was the best player out there when he came on - great technically & can stick a pass. His dribble & cut to Burgess, should've been the equaliser - but a great save.

Welcome to the forum, Socceroos Fan.

Was hoping for the final score?

Can't get Ten Play.

Sanfrecce won 1-0. Sydney created lots of chances, but their keeper was superb. SFC should've had at least 2 penalties - the ref was appalling

Thanks.

What a shame!

I'm not one to complain about refs, but I feel like the Socceroos have had a more than a fair share of bad decisions from West Asian refs.

Was video replay available for the missed pen decisions?

sydney created a ton of chances and should have had 2 pens

but I just never felt they would score

not usually a fan of this sort of comment, but somethign about their body language was off today
There was one brilliant save from their keeper from Quahim, that was a goal for all money, & the keeper was lucky with the Burgess touch after a nice run from Qintal, the ball bobble into the air instead of behind him into net.

I know Sydney lost but gee they play a nice style of football almost foreign to Oz football especially in Asia.

A style which showcases the technical level of the players more which is more relational rather than the usual structural positional way which our teams usually follow.
But it made them more effective when they got into the final third and created some very good chances against a strong opponent.

Again they should have gotten a least a point like the last game but their keeper had a great game plus it seems they had a stonewall penalty taken away but overall I haven’t seen an Australian team play a style which makes them effective in possession and can showcase the technical level more than this Sydney team.
If anything they matched them technically which got me by surprise.

It shows their is another way of playing which can help Oz football and its players especially when competing in Asia.

Quintal for Sydney looked great as well and shows Sydney fc’s production line isn’t slowing down.
Barca, I'm really happy someone else is seeing what SFC are doing, there is quality all over the park in terms of technical ability.
I too have not seen an Australian team take to a Japanese side in terms of technical ability, we are still behind the no doubt, but it's a breath of fresh air.
Also watching the A-league teams playing out from the back with the press is also refreshing, some do struggle as their touch let them down, but they are trying.
Finally coming into the real world.

I've watched a far bit of Melb City and Melb Vic this year.

Both are playing some beautiful football playing out from the back.

Haven't seen SFC yet for an extended period. I like what I'm reading. I've noted in a few games where I've watched for 15 mins or so, SFC have a very young defence. This is very much the organisational part of teams.

Agree they finally coming to terms of the modern game I still see the stigma attached towards why teams play out and press but more and more coaches are embracing it especially young coaches.

I remember when WSW won the ACL the assumption was made that this is best way to play in Asia as we are not skilled enough to play more advanced styles, well this Sydney fc side has certainly blown that theory out of the water.

It shows there is an alternative way of playing that doesn’t mean we need to resort into hiding our football, it reminds me of Arnie’s DNA comments where we can’t play football as good as most teams so we need to be risk adverse and therefore hold back the ability of our players just to get a result but at what cost.

Jus when an Aus team needs it!
Yes VAR is great when it benefits your team, I remember when introduced in FIFA World cup 2018 & Australia v France & we got a penalty against us with VAR, the Aussie crowd was chanting 'bullshit' 'Bullshit', when we got a penalty via VAR, the Aussie crowd was chanting 'VAR' 'VAR'

Yes this fear of playing the 'luxury' player as opposed to the no frills, but all action man was part of Arnie's DNA. He was very lucky at SFC, he had Ninkovic, who was a highly technical player but also worked hard.

Sydney has some very highly technical players, of course Costa, Senna & Quahim, but in Caceres, Burgess, Mathews & both youngsters Quintal & Kucharski shows very good technical ability. I saw Kucharski in one play using both feet to turn on a dime & continue the play forward, I thought I was watching Mane at Liverpool.

Sydney use a very fast first interchange to work through the press and it is incredibly effective.

To some extent, they don't care how many players are covering the first pass recipient because their role is to immediately redirect it on to someone else. All game Sydney had players marked by two and even three players and they just bounced the ball off that marked player (keeping the opponents focussed on that location) and on to someone else more lightly marked. Fantastic method of beating numbers and pressure much the same as bouncing the ball off a DM from the backline to draw the opposition closer then going straight back to the original passer and round them wide - but at the same time so much more effective because of where it was on the field.

I cannot recall an aleagues team who had player after player able to hold the ball and distribute it in intense pressure against multiple opponents and keep possession. You have a really skilled midfield SFC supporters and what a pleasure that must be for you. I enjoy watching it.

At least two of the penalty shouts involved the SFC player going to ground too easily after what I consider to be a clear foul on them. The ref has come from a background where contact results in a drop all game so I expect they use the 'victims' actions as the decider in the spur of the moment. If they see a weak drop they ignore it as exaggeration. My problem with the ref by far worse was allowing that one Hiroshima player make so many clear, obvious, professional fouls and he did not get a single card for any of them. The only card he got was eventually for dissent. It is not an exaggeration to say that he did more than 10 blatant professional fouls with impunity.

Back to my thought about the 'victim's' actions in a foul, I guess the ME refs have constant calls for cards for all 30 minutes of game time in their matches and they have just become inured to it. Unless they see a really obvious shirt pull for 10 metres, or the actor on the ground does a particularly entertaining death cry, they tend to ignore professional fouls.

I really dislike that mentality and how it impacts their reffing - we lose because we just don't have the despised mentality to take advantage of it - for which, I have to say, I am bloody grateful.

Well done SFC regardless of the score.

Yep I wished more coaches would embrace this more especially the Oz players who are more than technically capable against almost anymore.

This is very true, the midfield are a joy to watch, Sena is something else, Caceres, Burgess, Quahim, Segecic are all comfortable on the ball, so to is Corey Hollman, currently out injured.

robbos just finished my game of golf with a fellow team mate and SFC devotee.
Obviously we always talk football and asked did I watch last night.
Yes i did because I was in the dog house haha - he brought up the midfield as discussed and the young backline.
Very nice close technical play I did enjoy despite being frustarted not getting the equaliser.
Quahim is good incl Burgess as mentioned but both of them try to do too much/over cook, Talay will get them sorted I expect in time.
Like Ninko I admire Caceras - best footballer to watch in the APL.
Afraid to say imo Popa's lad isn't good enough, young Mathews lacking experience is showing him up.
Young pairing I know but AP is the weaker link.
Klimala looks promising.
A game without key players, Costa/Lolley/someone else can't recall :)
Man Alex King, from what he was few seasons back a very late sub.

Golf the great equaliser.

I like Caceres too, not sure why he never got call up for Socceroos.

Alex Popovic is not Tony's son. They are not related apart from same last name.

For a long while he had a tendency to beat ones or two players and then turn back an try to beat them again while ignoring his teammates. That has finally turned around

Stats by ALM club
CCM 67 games 3 goals 1 assist
MCI 46 games 3 goals 3 assists
SFC 185 games 16 goals 28 assists

yes the equaliser haha

I reckon Caceras should have been tried out couple years back.
Ah ok, not his boy, stand by my observation, not good enough to date.
