The Ange at Tottenham Thread

Ange back to winning ways at Spurs with a 3-1 win over Southampton at home which means that Southampton are the first team relegated from the Premier League for season 2024-25, with seven matchdays left.

Why do you have it for ange so much?

I get it why Ange would rub people up the wrong way, but I think it's misguided.

With Ange comes a large group of admirers. Most just want to see an Australian do well / like the guy for what he's given to the game. He brings that with him wherever he goes and it annoys the snobs/traditionalists.

Furthermore, he can come across as a bit of a wise veteran of the game, when in reality he's only dipped his toes into the top levels of the game. Which again, rubs people up the wrong way.

The truth is it's somewhere in between. Ange does a lot of defending his own character because he has that self belief. He's also a genuinely open guy and feels a level of comfort after doing what he's done for 25+ years.

I don't think he intends to be something he's not. People just interpret it that way. I think there are a large (maybe even majority) of Spurs fans that genuinely wish it could have worked with Ange.

I agree with most of this assessment. He's gotten a bit ahead of his skis and its kind of cringe.

However I have nothing personal against Ange, I've just seen a bit more of his work than most and see his tactical flaws before many who just look at prior results from afar. Hoping and wishing wont make those go away - they're issues he has to fix himself and no amount of backslapping is going to help.

He's supported by Jedinak, Monty & some random portuguese guy who was at Mariners. They're nobody's. Same with the English contingent there.

A far cry from your Queiroz's and Meulensteen's who had the ear of SAF all those years ago.

He has no shoulder to lean on. His backroom staff are a bunch of novices and it shows.

agreed

he had better staff at Celtic and wanted to bring them with him, but they chose to stay and work with Rodgers instead

Every manager at elite level has connections. They bring them in whether as assistants or DOF’s.

Ange never really worked those connections much and prior to Spurs, Celtic was his only European top flight gig he’d been exposed to.

He’s his own man, but at the summit of football, one requires skilled advisors to communicate your ideas in training and have the managers ear on match-day.

I think Ange has been largely let down by the Aussie contingent over there.

its a good point that he's never made any connections with quality staff, and the likes of Montgomery and Jedinek are clueless... not to mention Kewell from an earlier job. However somebody has failed in the staff recruitment process to not be able to bring anyone in with sufficient expertise that Ange has to turn to underqualified Aussie sycophants as his inner sanctum. If Ange signed off on these guys being the best Spurs could get, that's on him too.
