Their Christian tenets of tolerance, such as turning the other cheek and not casting the first stone unless thou is without, sin seem to have gone right out he window.

End-stage capitalism has created a massive problem for those of us who wish to have kids and raise a family. Japan is going to have an enormous problem and at the other end we have the forever wars that are eradicating people at a mass scale like those in the Middle East and Russia.

It's a fact that the more developed a county becomes the more the birth rate trends down. If Australia, and plenty of other countries, didn't have immigration we'd be in the same boat.

Which is why, if we don't want millions of refugees everywhere, we need to help other countries drag their arses up out of the muck. Foreign aid is a must.

The more stable a country is, the more educated, the more safe, the less likely it is that people will flee en masse.

Which is interesting because the same mobs that rail against foreign aid are the same mobs that don't want 'reffos' and immigrants from '3rd world shitholes' coming here.


I see plenty of upsides to a shrinking world population. Not to say there won't be challenges. The undeniable fact is infinite growth is not sustainable. It just ain't.

I don't want a shrinking population, I want one that stays about where we are at maybe a little larger.

As for most of your post, I am not anti-immigration, but I read something completely left-field today. Every time a well-educated young person settles here to escape war and poverty it has a pretty detrimental effect on that country's ability to lift itself out of the positive.

I'm always happy for more migration, especially considering Australia will most likely benefit in the grand scheme of things. However, I could see how frustrating it can be for those folks back home.

1000% agree. Rather than train doctors here, because even after HECS it costs the government 100s of thousands of dollars, they pinch one from some third world country for free diminishing their human capital. It's fucking immoral. (Or engineers, scientists, nurses and teachers.)

Of course somebody here will say it's their choice whether they want to leave or not not and that's true but either way we shouldn't be a part of it.

As for immigration that's fine but they need to limit the amount of people they're bringing in to sustainable levels. For example you can't bring in 400 000 people in a year if you can only build 200 000 houses. If it's a one off, fine, but it's not.

200k houses short in year one means that we're a million homes short in 5 years. It's not rocket surgery to see how that's going to create a problem.

Despite calls from both parties to have a discussion about Australia's population goals nobody has stepped up to have a crack at what it could be. Do we want 50 million by 2050, 100 million?? What are we aiming for here? There seems to be no plan at all except bring them in because we're short fruit pickers, baristas, waiters and menial workers..

We have entered my urban planning hard-on which is densification.

We can host that number but the answer is densification, especially in our cities and urban centres. Get around YIMBYism. Get around Public and Active transport.

Still need to build enough apartments though and they're not keeping up.

Agreed but even if everything is approved there's not enough people to build them at the rate they're needed.

Hasn't Minns just freed up a whole bunch of increased density near railway stations?

Yeah and then it gets contested and delayed and every delay causes significant backlogs.

Look at the QVM development, as an example, in Melbourne which promises hundreds of housing. It has been delayed due to a fucking federal heritage review.

Therefore, my question is: Is there a plan there and it has faced a number of delays due to frivolous appeals and consultations? Like, fuck me just build it. If you want to live on an acreage move regional. You don't get both.

Dont disagree but in Melbourne at least, our infrastructure just wont allow for this... Schools, hospitals, shoppig and corproate space... its all been reamed out of the burbs for decades now ....

Activity centres are key to decentralisation. Footscray, Box Hill, Frankston, Werribee are all going up. I think you'll see a lot of changes with SRL and other infrastructure changes.
