The Unofficial Australian Football Club Database/Pyramid

I'm getting started on my full list database. I may end up essentially doing a version that tracks Australia Cup entrants over time (but we'll see how that goes)

On the full list, doing a test run on 2024 structure/pyramid, so will look something like this (am adding as the opening sheet to the main database spreadsheet)
1739230078680.png

Haven't gotten started on the QLD logos yet (other than the one in the Choose Your Club thread) - have had quite a bit going on in the family this year, so am going at a slower pace than anticipated.
I do have the 2020 logos for Victoria and NSW in PSD format, so other than a refresh for some clubs there, this is mostly complete. Will probably aim at doing a logo refresh every couple of years.
Aim of the above spreadsheet is using the Australia Cup to add any new clubs/clubs I have missed.

Region / Association will be weird to add - given that associations don't really exist in any of the Metro areas (except for Sydney), so for these, this will probably just also be 'Metro' again.

Leagues will be numbered - aiming to have it work in a drop down filter way. For example, the way I have WA structures, it goes down to the 17th tier
  1. A-League
  2. NPL
  3. SL1
  4. SL2
  5. Amateur PL
  6. Amateur 1
  7. Amateur 2
  8. Amateur 3
  9. Amateur 4
  10. Metro Premier
  11. Metro Division 1 (North and South)
  12. Metro Division 2 (North and South)
  13. Metro Division 3 (North and South)
  14. Metro Division 4 (North and South)
  15. Metro Division 5 (North)
  16. Metro Division 6 (North)
  17. Metro Community Leagues + Regional Association Leagues

Will add this to the first page too - not sure how/if people can open - but this is the Google Earth file of all home grounds in Australia. I think you should be able to download the file, and use with Google Earth's desktop app to view.

Every club now input into one Master Sheet at the start. Still have a state-by-state breakdown on their own tabs, but won't be doing as much on that end going forward - will essentially update a new master sheet every year.

While the master sheet isn't finished, it is aimed to capture:
  • Club name (parentheses for extra identifiers where necessary, such as the 2x Melbourne City clubs in Victoria, or the multiple Barnstoneworth United clubs littered around the country, or universities that have multiple campuses, and thus multiple clubs)
  • State - this is the state/member federation the club's highest grade team is registered in, regardless of where the club is actually located. Not many instances of this being different - off the top of my head, just Yoogali SC (ACT/NSW), and the whole Broken Hill Association (part of SA). Also some of VIC/NSW around Albury, as the association, according to both FNSW and FFV are registered to both states, although appears to be more aligned with the Victorian system (not competing in NSW Champion of Champions for example), so are included as Victoria
  • Region - This is whatever the next sub-category beyond 'state' I can formally break down into. Eg, Victoria essentially just has 'Metro' for all of Melbourne (same as all capital cities except Sydney), and no associations within. Victoria then also goes into Regional, and then associations. NSW however, in the 'Metro' section, there are associations, and then rather than just 'regional' there are 'Branches' which the regional associations then fall into.
  • Association - As above. If can't be broken down further, will just be the same as the region. Eg, South Melbourne would be listed as VIC, Metro, Metro. With NSW though, in a few instances, it appears the clubs in NPL level competitions don't appear in association club lists, so I'll use discretion in placing them geographically with a location. In quite a few instances (such as St George), the association themselves run a club in a league, so the association will be themselves. If this association is a 'regional' one (such as Shoalhaven competing in a metro NSW league), this will be accounted for.
  • League - Have set up a number in front to make for easy sorting. 01. A-Leagues, 02. NPL, etc. Each step of the rung moves down a number. Will try and actually split up the community leagues, etc for each state to properly break it down, rather than lumping them all together for a true pyramid. Just noting that any league that is directly connected pro/rel to the NPL, has been given the NPL identifier.
  • Australia Cup 2024 - Whether the club competed in the Australia Cup last year. Will do another column for this year in due course.
Empty gaps are because I'll need to confirm/research some things as above. But otherwise... enjoy!

Now go one step further and sort them by food/ethnicity? hahahahahaahahaah

I'm a bit stuck on classifying clubs in Capital Football outside ACT though. (region + association)

  • All the clubs actually in Canberra will be Canberra + Canberra
  • Yoogali and Wagga I'll classify as the same as the other clubs in their region, (Riverina + Wagga / Griffith), so that's easy.
  • The two Queanbeyan clubs, I'm not sure whether to class as Canberra + Queanbeyan, or as per their council area (Queanbeyan-Palerang), so then I can also lump in everything else (Bungendore, Palerang, everything else that's outside of Goulburn)
EDIT: Have settled on the last option essentially, using the Federal Highway as the divider

Available from the original link, but sharing again due to update:

I’ve done my best to add the 2024 League and State/Region/Association to every club. The exceptions are:
  • Haven’t sorted clubs areas for the NPL connected clubs in Victoria
  • A few gaps in leagues in places
I’m aiming to eventually update each states individual spreadsheet to just have the league pyramid structure, without the clubs in each league (as this information will be in the main master sheet)

I have also found an extra 10 clubs across WA, VIC, NNSW and NSW that I’ll need to add locations to (these are at the bottom of the master sheet)

Another aim, is to essentially add the leagues/Australia Cup participation each season to the master sheet. This way, I don’t need to redo the leagues pyramid structure each year, and can just add any new clubs and follow their history. One column I’m also looking at adding, is “Former Names” - this way we can track clubs that have changed names, but are still the same (idea came from Breakwater Eagles changing to Geelong City in Victoria for the upcoming season)

The GOAT

Just for you, Australia Cup 2024 participants added for ACT, NT, SA, WA and TAS ;)

2025 Leagues I will wait until probably like April/May, as some of the leagues are still taking registrations/setting fixtures, etc.

2025 Australia Cup, I’ll start doing once I finish the 2024 Australia Cup. Probably a next week job since I’ve been running off my phone and iPad for this tonight.

You're the best. It is so hard to find this data through official channels and Wikipedia. This just makes things so much better thank you!

For those playing at home - 1675 Active Football Clubs (that I’ve picked up) across Australia (including all APL franchises).

Granted, I’ve missed a few (or just accidentally skipped when inputting), so I’ve added 11 to this list tonight. Also, there are (at least so far from what I’ve counted through) 3 clubs that appear to have folded mid season, or appear on existing club databases that I’ve 100% confirmed did not compete in 2024, so these are still included at the moment.

Actually - I have a question for anyone interested in giving input here - in some instances, I’m adding clubs that are missing via the Australia Cup.

How should I treat some of the NNSW clubs from the Australian Cup - it appears that some of the NPL / larger clubs in NNSW have been able to enter twice into the cup: essentially their senior team as the main club, and a reserve grade-esque team under the guise of a ‘junior’ club (Lambton Jaffas as one example).

Given that as part of the Australia Cup entrants column, this will skew the data, should I be essentially including this ‘Junior’ club, but at whatever level that clubs second team appears in a league structure (For example, Lambton Jaffas Juniors appears to be the NNSW Interdistrict All Age Division C)

I wouldn't add junior clubs to the DB, unless you want to add all the junior clubs haha. If you're doing a seperate worksheet for the Cup, then yeah you probably should list all the teams even for the same club.

Yeah this is my worry. I think it’s good to have just singular clubs in the Aus Cup column in this, even if they did technically enter twice
