Which Book Are You Reading thread

Hi Grazor, I think you have somewhat misconstrued my take on Joe Gorman.

Yes he does indeed give a impassioned defence of the injustice faced by the ethnic clubs both pre and post NSL (from a self admitted outsider's perspective) yet postulates that moving forward in the Aleague era these very fans should forgoe their history to help shape the brand new world. Its been a good couple of years since I read the thing but my memory of reading it was one of disappointment rather than hope.

P.S yes THAT very quote fro Lou Sticca drives my hatred of the little toad and his WU franchise
I don't think that's his recommendation at all tho? He implores a league fans to engage with the history and ends with a sympathetic picture of paul who hasn't moved on

I agree it doesn't leave the reader with a lot of hope. He seems completely disillusioned by the end of the book

OK, OK, Ill dig out a copy and read it again then ... sheeeesh... :)

I can tell you that Paul definitely HASNT moved on ... I see him every weekend ... lol

Joe Gorman's book was a good read, but left me with an empty feeling. Interestingly, he moved away from writing about soccer and went on to cover other sports.
Paul Mavroudis, SMH fan, to this day has not attended an A League game.
Yeah have the empty feeling myself after reading it, tho as u say it was an astonishing read, so much research

I guess for him the empty feeling of the injustice that made the a league killed his ability to go to enjoy australian football. It's a fair worry, then again most fans watched the Qatar world cup including myself.

Like Qatar, I'll still watch the a league. Maybe that makes me morally week that I love oz football too much, but my view of the a league has definitely darkened a lot after reading it

I wish he stayed in the game as an advocate

Yeah the author makes the point that these were clubs that people were willing to mortgage their houses for. No one should be shamed for not moving on

Besides, if we ever have p and r, support at the lower end of the pyramid is even more important than the top...

Slighty different take from my end ... Football in this country (or at least for as long as I have known it) has always been a massive disappointment administratively .... Ill never stop watching my club or the Socceroos though, I let the other sort themselves out....

There is a very real bitterness, especially amongst the older generations for this exact reason ... The "club" was their way of joining in to Australian society in the way they felt comfortable with .. to be told that their hard work, sweat, toil, money and dreams for their children means NOTHING by someone they thought was the same as them (Lowy) was a massive betrayal.

Still happens to some degree but not as wild as the early days ... I read that Mrs Viduka got a lovely new concrete driveway when young Marko signed his first contract with Melb Croatia ...... :)

It does seem pretty cruel
like @ashtongate it definitely left me with an empty feeling. Like I mentioned, it is like reading about migrant slaves in qatar before the 2022 world cup :D

has australian society improved? Is it still the case that every institution is not comfortable with anything less than a system of complete anglo dominance? Is this fear that having even one ethnic club would marganalize the sport still driving decisions at the a league and the fa?

I'm curious how you guys stay hopeful about oz football?

hahahahah as you can tell, we mostly don't! hahahahahahha

Believe it or not D, Im not an avid football book reader.... I read for pleasure, football is FAR to important and NOT particularly pleasurable ... :)
that's *too important

not an avid reader generally it would seem unless you're going to claim ESL

Probably not many’s cup of tea (given more teenager focused), but just finished the new Hunger Games second prequel (Sunrise on the Reaping) this weekend. Pretty good tie in to the original trilogy I thought
