World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

Game day, feeling nervous

Got my pitchfork in one hand for a loss, beer in the other for a win, just need something disappointing but not so disappointing it is the end of the world for a draw

vegan cheese? Low fat yoghurt?
just make sure you remember which hand goes with what mate ...... Don't try and sip at your beer without looking down first.....

Agree with everything you said except I felt Ange was to rigid aswell. but then again he needed to be rigid, as the players psyche is a major part of his tactic.

I honestly think all three haven't been fluid enough in there approach.
Ange’s as much it was entertaining it was also naive for international play,

But your right that all three were rigid in their own right especially the first two.

I found Ange to be less rigid, in that his playing style was to always offer multiple passing options so the players themselves had to be more fluid and less predictable in their movement.

That said, there were many times I wanted them to just put their heads down and go for it in the Ange system but the patient possession dynamic just continued at its steady pace.

For Popa, I doubt he has modified his system to try and be more balanced - more to me that his system is just a more balanced approach than Arnie's inherently. His continued use of Duke (not bagging Duke this time just using him as an example) as a hound dog when creative and relatively proven strikers were available shows that denying goals is still his primary objective rather than a genuine balance.

alot of these general coachs styles discussions goes back to Pascuali posting the Amorin link, they all have their own rigid style/s (though so many are similar) thats what makes them but its reliant on the cattle they have fed and nuture that no matter how much you go through training regimes and talk sessions that 90mins makes you look a genius or mug/no plan B gets mentioned :).
One day everything goes to plan and the typical postives post game the next it can be pear shaped - x players have off days, bounce of the ball - OR the coach didn't sub early enough, he should have picked such and such.
This is in some ways the beauty of the game, you can't pick it neither can they game in game out.
Hard to change the momentum when its against you let alone refs calls throw in as well.

Now consider this important to win away game in front of 70k blindly screaming chinese fans.
Interestingly Poppa has a fellow ethnic/Cro very experienced opposing gaffa to contest Branko Ivanković’.
This guy is no mug as well and been around the traps for sometime with some fair results.
His last Oman 4yr tenure win ration 47%.
AFC runners up 2018.
Persion Gulf winner.
He's missing a couple of key defenders not sure who else but this will be a big challenge for us - they suffered that red card in Saudi just before HT and held them to a 1nil loss.
Looks like they can absorb punishment, at home will be even harder.
So talk about creativity needed, hope Goodwin starts up more than anyone else.
We really need to stay that 1 point above Saudi worst case scenario IF they beat Japan, IF, for starters before those next 2 games.

If x system and y system were always consistent then you could scrap the games and just play it out on paper to see who won.

It is the beauty of the game (and sport in general) that any result is possible on the day.

It's just that as Aussies the results should always be in our favour ;)!

On our side tonight is the bonus of us showing improvements and results recently, so we will start the game with players high in confidence and willing to play positive football. We needed that after playing depressingly negative football for awhile.

I don't feel nervous about tonight's game (not complacency - confidence in us playing well). I think we can and will win it.

Come on you Roos!

I reckon changes we see are:

Degenek -> Geria
Goodwin -> Boyle
Duke -> Taggart
Triantis -> O'Neill

The last one I think is more wishful, but you never know what you are going to get with Popa.
I’d be happy with those changes

Kluivert made it easier for us as he played an attacking formation with a high press and plenty of space behind the CBs.Will China be as generous -probably not-so we need to score an early goal and make them play rather than sit back in a low block as most Asian teams do against us( apart from Japan and South Korea).We always have trouble opening up these low blocks as we lack a creative no 10( not really on Popa's playbook anyway) and rely on set pieces to score against them.Remember three of our goals against Indonesia were from a penalty and two corners and that was against a team not playing particularly defensively.

I agree, if we look back at the Indo game on Thursday:-

1. The header and Ryan's save - the hand in the back of Burgess gave the bloke the space to have a free header. Easily should have been a free to us and no header on goal.
2. Penalty - was only a slight touch, could have missed and no penalty
3. Indo goal - high foot by their no. 10 could have been adjudged dangerous play and free to us (VAR did have a look).

That the decisions went the other way wasn't an issue. Just showing that our 3 vulnerable moments could have been differently refereed. All in all though, things did seem to go our way during the game, including the save by Ryan and the penalty hitting the post, so no complaints from me, not forgetting our rather favourable penalty decision.

Agree with everything except the last sentence.

How on Earth is a rugby tackle a favourable decision? Absolute stone waller and I was celebrating the moment the ref was told to go and look.

Speaking of penalties, I'm pretty worried about home town decisions tonight - for all sorts of reasons.

However, given the desperately (recklessly) passionate way the Chinese can go about the game, I wouldn't be surprised to see them cop another red card. Of course, it would be a brave ref to do so.

May as well heap the pressure on Saudi although I feel it'll come down to the last game. Just adds more to what a win against Japan will do in June.

Saudi may not win in Bahrain though as Bahrain will want a Playoff spot.

Winning is also important just to keep the others at bay as they're still hovering with points to play for.

Need it to be like Australia cricket WC in India. Silence the crowd and have them submit early. There'll be lots of loud Asian girl scream at the smallest of opportunities for them.

An early goal would really settle things. I think we just need to keep peppering the box and shoot as defections are typical. Set plays have become an asset now that we run lines.

It's at set plays we can most expect their dark arts (unless they do get their noses in front).

They'll stop at nothing to prevent us from getting to crosses and that's where a red card could happen, if the ref was confident of getting out of the country alive.

It was a rugby tackle but I like that Miller went to ground. Also Burgess had his kit so stretched his number was on his shoulder. We need to make teams pay for this.

That is more likely in our home games...

Sort of pointless in their own country.
