World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

Another interesting aspect is Saudi will have two games in close time zones this window. They won't be fazed by warmer conditions either.

Our pot has the worst with time zone changes. Maybe we should play Indonesia in Perth to be on Beijing time? Not a massive difference though.

Pretty annoyed Goodwin has made the trip.

My concern is where the goals are going to come from for us in these two games, especially with Goodwin missing the first one. Not sure there's too many goals in this team against decent opposition.

I'm hoping Borello has a blinder & scores a couple, set up by Jordy Bos

matey it will upset the many here and me for I'm just as passionate as everyone here but I'll put the neck out :) for it is what it is.
Got to stop sugar coating things, we're in a hole and for sometime as we've seen.
Poppa is just a change of the scenery so to speak.
We are a minnow to a degree today, maybe not the right description, others have caught up others have us worked out, we are behind on many fronts, we lack killer, we lack a outlier, we lack goals, we lack pace on and with the ball, we pass and pass, reset reset more back into our own half or around halfway.
We are structured no doubt and mature after all the years of learning to cover our arse, good at parking the bus in the hope of the successful counter but how many counters do we create per game AND how many times do we HIT the target/the GK even...let alone score a few.
Without Goodwin who is the most consistant seasoned flanker who can provide a consistant great cross in the mixer he our main old weapon barring the exceptions.
Souttar and Irvine are on our top scorers list to date.
The Japan away game was amazing getting that stubborn point and they were not on song - amazing and as we know they are the bar.
65 to 35% possession.
17 shots to 3.
5 on target to 2.
9 corners to 0.
1.89 xG to 0.49

In saying that I expect we will and should beat Saudi at home you'd think ??? but BUT I won't be surprised once they have settled in they snag that unexpected goal followed by their niggling terrible tactics expect the unexpected for we are blunt unless our fellas prove it wrong.
Happy to be proven as such.

jas88, yep Mabil is blank for me, how many more chances do you give ? only pick IF we are desparate need ahead.
Yengi I'm still on the fence, he's trying to be too aggressive/braun like as if he's been nutured by Duke, he has alot to learn but - 8 caps early days, 4 goals better than many though pretty light opponents but got to start somewhere.
Max Balard, another hopeful, lets not get ahead of ourselves, we have been through similar countless times, hope he kicks on.
Enjoy fellas and the following banter/posts I'll look in sooner or later, peace.
Well said mate. That's why Popovic should've included a few more creative players like Arzani & Piscapo with Goodwin unavailable. I've loved what Boyle has done over the last few years, but I think it's time to move on - 2 goals from 10 games for Hibs this season and he missed a pen on the weekend. Still think he should've picked Irankunda as a super sub at RW - he's another X factor player that can win you a game if he's played in his best position.

Football Asia segement as Paul Williams host of The Asian Game podcast joined Simon Hill and Alex Brosque tonight to preview the forthcomimg FIFA World Cup qualifying fixtures during November window with several key big matches across the region.

Harry Souttar defender from Sheffield United and Subway Socceroos joined the The Global Game program this evening with Simon Hill and Alex Brosque from their team hotel in Melbourne ahead of two very crucial FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

Interesting chat about robertson

Apart from the grievance with ga he wants to figure out if playing for the roos is best for his body

Makes sense he would worry about that with the travel

My preferred line up

Gauci
Geria Souttar Burgess Bos
Balard O'Neill
Borrello Irvine McGree
Yengi

We've got to dominate the midfield. I don't think people realise how much ground Balard and O'Neill will cover. They've got a tank for above 90min. Add Irvine's height and late runs and it should unsettle Saudi into moving which creates chances to feed Bos and the rest.

Velupillay could also start.

Indonesia and Japan agreed to put their game back 24 hours to allow for comfortable travel from Europe. It'll be played Friday. Annoying as I had all Thursday to watch qualifiers.

Mackenzie Hunt of Fleetwood Town to play for UAE having spent many childhood years there.

Kevin Diks of FC Copenhagen to make Indonesia debut. While the will hopefully chip away at our opponents, they're getting better with their decent level Europeans.

Bahrain play China at 5pm local time while our game is at 9:15pm. Can count ourselves somewhat lucky it's in a slightly cooler temperature but odd scheduling in a way. No way they can bring it forward surely.

Guessing it will be 3 5 2 again tho

Undoubtedly. Souttar said having 2 partners means he can pass and move more freely which is an asset.
Imagine if we had souttar and circati in the back 3

Ahhh that good old aussie football curse

Bos, Burgess, Souttar, Rowles, Baccus and Silvera one card away from suspension. Just find 2 yellows brutal given how the refs are in Asia.

Inevitable suspensions so I guess we should try and avoid them as long as possible.

Thanks,
Yep I agree Arzani and Pisco sure would help offensive I agree, as much as many here question aging Caceras he’s worth a shot as long as he uses him.
Boyles use by date came by little while ago.
He is not the same player and lacking our needs and this is where young Irakunda should be out the right flank we’re on the same page.
Alas not to be.

Not just brutal but biased against Australia. The refs were giving us yellows that they were barely blowing a foul for the Japanese players. It's even worse v ME teams.

It does end up a back 5 more often than not though. I think getting up the line on the wings is a key to unlocking our attacking potential. That and attacking defenders to beat them and turn the defense rather than always turning back.

In the first game under Popa we seemed to play very narrow. It seemed less an issue in the second game but still something to watch for this week.
