World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

If only there were a tournament where we could play a younger, reserve side against SE Asian opposition in order to get more exposure and experience....
Well said!

We are at a critical stage in WC qualification, but don't have any ops for friendlies.

As others have mentioned if we were in Europe, or any of Africa, South America, North America, we could find a quality opponent nearby with little travel involved.

yeah it does seem a worry. Hopeflly we get clarification soon
Oh no, not this scenario again!

If he had played two mins against China or Indo we would be right.

Another way to look at it, is we are producing more players of a decent calibre if other nations want them. Greece is a decent national team.

I know younger members of this forum use different media, but I'm sick to death of Aussie rules on ABC TV. There is virtually no football coverage on ABC TV.

On FB I'm getting some AL site articles which is good. I'm getting a few Socceroo and Matildas ones too.
3MMM was wall to wall Tottenham Hostspur this morning :)

Haven't seen Ballard play for a while.

At CCM he looked to be a competent player, with little that is outstanding. It is good he has had a good season in Netherlands though.

I think a lot could be the more global nature of the game now. No one would even look at the NSL. It was Australians and everyone knows they can't play.

It wasn't until the gg we made a world cup and had a decent number of guys make it in Europe.

Why would you bother trying to get talent from a country that can't even make a world cup.
I dont know how much this could change things but also dual national players, with Euro citizenship, now find it easier to play "closer to ancestral home" than in lower English tiers because of Brexit? Not applicable to Triantis obvs, before anyone points it out :)

As Europe moves politically rightward and immigration becomes more of a hot political issue there is growing movement against awarding citizenship on the basis of ancestry. Italy is changing the laws, plus a number of other European countries looking at it too. Milei is also moving towards this in Argentina. So long story short, if this trend continues, dual citizenship will become harder for many to achieve. Which will possibly have a future impact on these types of situations.

I misread you. I thought you'd meant we'd lost 3 already. I think theres a lot to play out.

I still think its likely most of those players play for us and I wouldn't start catastrophising it yet.

I do hope we smarten up and start being a bit more strategic capping these players though, as I mentioned in a post above.

I think Popovic coming in to do or die games every qualification round hasn't helped that. But I still think theres ways to win these games and to tie down our promising dual nationals.
It's a lot harder to cap tie someone these days. For a start friendlies don't count, and a dual national needs 3 official matches or selection in a World Cup or Asian Cup finals squad. I don't believe we should be going out of our way to give players a national team spot until they have earned it. If they want to play for another country then I don't really want them playing for us.

There'll be no Irankunda. Been called up for the U20s squad who are travelling to Argentina. First game June 6.

Triantis is even more impressive when watching full games in my experience. Teague has a very different profile and also has played with poppa before which probably benefits him
I reckon on the basis of Popovic's previous statements that Triantis is now lost to the NT unless some of the senior players, e.g. Boyle or Irvine can persuade him to come back to the team and poppa, which I don't think will happen. More than just disappointing!

yeah poppa has a policy of not convincing players to wear the shirt which is understandable, but also other countries including some pretty proud football countries are happy to try and convince people to wear the shirt

greece have been pursuing triantis quite a bit according to various interviews with traintis. Croatia chased pavlesic. Peru seem to be chasing robbo. Italy are pressuring volpato (though a lot of that is his club not wanting him to travel)

Has Popovic said Triantis is lost to the NT?

Has Popovic said Triantis is lost to the NT?
Not as far as I can recall. I think Hillbillys post is one of those where punctuation becomes important to understanding. If you insert a comma after "reckon", and another comma after "statements", I think that the meaning becomes clear. IE:
"I reckon, on the basis of Popovic's previous statements, that Triantis is now lost ....."
