World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

A separate thing - how come we were not wearing white socks last night, Saudi were wearing white. We were the home team, so surely we get to wear our first choice kit?
Usually for these things, it's a "Home" and "Away" full set. When it comes to small changes like that, it's generally a flip of the coin who is the one that changes the socks (or alternatively the shorts has happened before)

We are very lucky that Saudis are as bad as we are.

The shooting was dreadful, they did defend well, but back to the drawing board.

Just one game until Metcalfe should be available again. The more I watch the replay the more I think he'd have been the perfect fit for the RWB spot. He can move into spaces and pass in all directions. In turn he'd be less of a wingback but more of an extra midfield and winger with Geria covering with ease.

If Popovic is to persist with this formation then I really hope he's just waiting for Metcalfe to return. I'd prefer a back 4 but I doubt he'll change now.
I'd still prefer Baccus there but happy to see Metcalfe tried in that role.

So what was the goal disallowed for? Surely Irvine played him on?

Don't think so,,, On the replay Gauci was nowhere near it anyway.... Lets just chalk it down to a "gift" from the football gods and move on...
Probably should add on - looked like to me there was a mix of being in the line of sight of Gauci, and also the shot had gone directly past the offside play, moving only his foot out of the way to let the shot through.

I am making the assumption the AR put the flag up because he thought the offside play flicked the ball on, and then VAR confirmed the player was offside, and despite not touching the ball, was in the direct line of sight of Gauci.

Your probably right.. still think it was a "borderline" ofside call anyway some lines on the replay would have helped clarify at least.

Sure, but I think (without any frame of reference) that he was onside before the shot anyway.
Before the shot, probably - I'll have to rewind and take a look. But this is what they would have looked at (being offside at the shot - hence the line of sight of Gauci reference)

EDIT: Yes, the corner was a deflected clearance of Souttar, so all players onside from that point, up until the shot. Irvine's arm being out makes it look like he is further back, but also keep in mind the back leg of the offisde Saudi player.

yeah that does look damning... I agree.. fair call then... can you click forward to see whose legs it went through though, I seem to remember it being bottom left corner?

Hrustic is ao annoying to watch. Looks like he 's always only give 70%, is slow, and always looking to complain.

He reminds me of the sort of player that would always look the part, but always had som little injury or some issue require him to get attention. never really ever worked for the team.

Also, I have supported Duke in years past but my god he is a lug now. We could just hire a MMA fighter if we just need someone to chase people down and use their body.
Agreed.

If yengi strings a bunch of games together in england maybe his press gets a but better and he can replace duke

Alternatively, toure and iredale could overtake them (honestly i think they already have)

I'd like to see Tate Yengi in the mix for matches against East Asian opponents.
