World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

Honestly, we played shit, but it all came down to Borello. His chance was about as gilt edged as you can get. All the others - Souttar, Hrustic, Irvine - were rushed and/or scuffed. You’d expect good players to at least test the keeper from them, but we know we don’t have good players.

But the Borello one was inexcusable for a forward player of any kind. He had time, he had space, he had the position. The fact that he didn’t even shoot was just surreal. It was he and he alone that ultimately cost us the 2 points. I hope he’s not rewarded just because he made a couple decent runs. He genuinely needs to be dropped. His pathetic square pass behind a well-covered McGree at such a key moment simply isn’t up to any professional standard. He doesn’t deserve another game after that.

What frustrates me was we left strikers in good goal scoring form in Europe. Borello was okay, but that finish is the difference between a player in form and confidence, and one that's not. If that opportunity fell to an in form striker we win.

It’s almost like Borello was too scared to take shot?! Good strikers are never scared to have a crack. And his pass was into opposition traffic ffs. No way Irankunda, Arzani or Milanovic aren’t kicking the shit out of that ball straight at goal in same scenario.

Socceroos have been mostly very frustrating to follow since qatar Wcup ended 👎

Okay - so I am by no means a football expert. I watch all the Socceroos internationals but don’t want much club football. What’s been striking to me in this current w/c campaign is just how poor we have been in the final third and completely devoid of any ideas in the midfield. The loss of Mooy has been huge and we have not had any link man in the mid field since this time. How can you go through 100 minutes against Saudi Arabia and have two shots on goal?!! We look like we’re playing at about 50%. Lift the energy and take more shots. Additionally, the commentary on 10 is so pro australia. Any opportunity to say we are “bossing” the game or have been the dominant team and they go for it despite the fact that we are terrible. Just say it how it is….never any acknowledgement that it’s concerning that we’ve had no shots and it’s 60 minutes into the game… completely bizarre

The more you watch the more you realise the low energy of midfield. O'Neill was just ok, Irvine won balls but for an offensive side, Irvine is too slow and not technical.

For the next game I'd rather see Bos at RWB and start Behich over having Miller there.

Welcome M m, pity your first post isn't much joy and you've summed bits most of us are in agreeance.
Well pointed out re our commentators, agreed they talk it up at times and I suppose thats how they need to present themselves in their job for general/casual viewers would be wondering why are the commentators being so crictical - truth hurts and future viewership.

Taking more shots is why i'm not sour on Irvine having a ping rather than squaring it. When you're in that range you have the right to shoot. I wish more of our strikers were selfish and shot. It's one of the bigger failings in the team first mentality, you still want your strikers to take that responsibility.

Yeah, I don't get why O'Neill won MOTM, to me he was invisible.

Logo looking good btw ;)

Toure or Iredale would've arrived in Bahrain before the rest of the squad had the call been made.

I've got a feeling Boyle could start up front. Don't really agree with it but we've got to change something.

Hasnt been in amazing form in the spl

Great form in cup games though!

I don’t think Boyle has been the same since his most recent injury and he might be past it at this point, but I feel like he has more of a killer instinct for goal than most of our attacking players.

Don't think anyone begrudged Irvine shot mate.. its the 5 meter passes to an open opponent that has my goat :)

Yes he is lazy, type of player that is never there when you need him. Always has a niggle too so he can not put in the hard work.
The bastard can turn it on when he wants though... Why is it always the technicay gifted players have the poorest work ethic :(
