World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

Absolute late goals galore across this group. We wanted others to drop points. We've just not helped ourselves. A massive chance missed this window and now it becomes a H2H showdown.

The system and selections are a curse. We keep feeding it to Miller. He tried but he's just not skilled. To think Miller is our preferred outlet shows how delusional the plan is.

Having all the defenders provides more outlets for back passing. We must stack the midfield and wings more. Inverted Goodwin makes little sense.

Saudi Arabia have the Gulf Cup in December. Expect ME teams to use it to plot their final qualifiers.

Most of our best moments came via Miller in the first half. He can attack OK but his rashness scares me to death in defence.

Hopefully Strain will be back soon.

The players are in an odd state mentally. Living on a thread on there. When we conceded their frustrations were massive and if you watch their reactions for equaliser most vent so much of their frustrations. Relief perhaps but there's something there. Maybe anger with themselves but they needn't be putting themselves in a hole like that.

The slow pace at stages when Bahrain were basically lining up to be knocked out is so frustrating. Had we won the interviews would all be about how we felt in control and the pacing suggested we knew what we were doing. We've got to realise buffers make things better rather than just scraping by.

That's right. We're going to persist with a back 5. Strain or Metcalfe will look better there.

Comforting is we've got more time to go over things but we should have more points. I'd be feeling a lot better with 9 let alone 11. We'd be on the cusp then.

Totally forgot Yengi's chest onto the bar. Game felt like Syria away. General control and a lead and needed a knock out blown then the stupid shit.

Will have to give the game another watch.

The solution definately isn't Popa.
Unfortunately we're in the shackles of a system that isn't doing us many favours. I wonder if and how the coaching staff can analyse this with Popovic? His stubbornness though won't see much change.

Will watch the replay later but watched it in fast forward to start to just have another look at the chances. We did seem to have a lot. Some of our finishing was poor and some of the play was negative imo. Here are the time stamps of the chances I found

Big chances
Australia: 38 seconds (goal)
Australia: 23:42 (saved a 1v1 with the keeper)
Australia: 28:46 (bad header but tough chance)
Australia: 32:34 (bad header, should have done better)
Australia: 50:00 (2v2 but recycle possession then drift off side after mysteriously refusing to shoot)
Australia 51:30 (not really a chance but a counter attack 2v3 but again mysteriously recycle possession when we get to the 18 yard box)
Australia 60:23 (not really a chance but a 3v2 after a chip over the top but we are weirdly negative and mcgrees first touch is back towards his own goal despite no one being near him and him being close to goal)
Austarlia 60:50 (cross to yengi who hits the post, unlucky)
Australia 63:00 (lay up for yengi who refuses to shoot and has a poor first touch)
Bahrain 63:30 (poor defensive header from burgess who blocks the pull back)
Bahrain 71:30 (set piece good flicked on header that goes wide)
Bahrain 74:00 (bad first touch from Burgess, 40m goal)
Bahrain 76:40 (bad defensive header from Matthews, Burgess and bos are in the same position as the striker to prevent the goal but don't react. Ryan robably can't save it but takes a bit too long to reset himself after his dive. Burgess is mysteriously appealing for offside)
Australia 92:00 (good cross and poor shot from hrustic)
Australia 95:00 (Goal from Yengi. Play doesn't start for 4:13 minutes yet only 2 minutes added on. Wasn't the only stoppage either)

yep agree on some points robbos.
Our close opponents are getting better than US - their touch for sure but its their application/want, we all grew up playing and hearing be first to the ball, be available keep moving/win 50/50's second balls.
Tactics aside its about application drive. We like in 2nd gear.
Attitude good point, I think we feel we are better than them, possibly due to the past ?? I just can't pick it but there is something there, arrogance ?, maybe too harsh but we as a nation have this outlook we are a better than some fellow asian neighbours no matter the code and our lifestyle differences.

Talking generally fellas, I've said this in the past, I think our expectations are too high, we have blunt attack, blunt midfield, be it Arnold now Poppa we hold shape defensively, thats what we seem to be better at than anything else (ie Japan draw) there's that saying good defense wins match's lol......but it ain't working.

Looking at the stats you shake your head.
Well we had more shots, 8 to 7, 4 on target that a couple should have been put through the net.
8 shots over 96mins ?!
Touch's in opposition box, 9 to our 26 !
Accurate pass's 272 our 441 - we got ball but doing what.
Corners 2 to our 6, I can't recall us winning the header (we had the height advantage) making their GK work or pick up the clearance take the shot on target but for Yengi 90+6min mark scramble thank the lord.

Anyway onwards and forwards with Poppa ball.
Yes why do I feel Japan are better at cornor and set piece than us? Height isnt everything, its the delivery and positioning.

Thanks. Saved me ages.

all of our corners were too close to the goal keeper
A few times, watching Souttar, he started at the point the ball should have been delivered to and ran away from there.

Instead of running to the spot where the ball will be arriving he vacated that space.

"It's just what they would expect us to do. Nya nya nya."

Similar to Oman 2:2 in 2012. Bosnich was livid at the tempo and we were so slow again. I wish we'd had Irankunda at RW because the space afforded there was too generous.

Just doing the predictor. I'd say it's likely we need 7 more points to progress automatically.

Can just never have nice things can we...
