World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

Looks like the best 6 we have playing out and he seems to be the best in tight area's. Well what I saw from u20 asian cup anyways. The other two seem more like BWMs.. although Triantis has good ball carrying.
Triantis and Balard are both exceptional at keeping the ball under pressure. Okon E very good also but not doing it at top level yet.

For those who've not seen much of Triantis for Hibs this year, this compilation shows exactly why he was named in the SPFL team of the season.

Surely (with Balard) our most in-form midfielder at the moment.

always had my eye on him for he comes from good stock, liked his bros they were good as well.....
I was disappointed bro Peter didn't kick on after SFC - well Jnr has.

Subway #Socceroos Squad Update:

Nectarios Triantis has withdrawn from the camp and will not make the trip to Abu Dhabi.

Alex Bonetig and Sebastian Esposito will join the squad, as players continue to arrive at the Subway Socceroos training base in the United Arab Emirates, for an intensive training camp ahead of #FIFAWorldCup qualifiers against Japan and Saudi Arabia.

Big strong lad, that can hold the ball and thread a pass and not afraid to have a shot .... not surprised he is being chased...Thanks for posting mate.

Did Triantis pick up a knock? While the camp doesn't guarantee selection and a lot will be omitted, skipping it puts your prospects down. Hopefully he's got something personal to attend to and Popovic picks him. He needs capping to be secured. Too much stuffing around.

Again Balard is more of a BWM he wins the ball back and gives it to someone else to pass. That's clearly evident in his stats, he doesnt make many passes all game. The difference is Triantis and Okon can dribble out of danger or play a long pass. That's just not max's game.

His progressive carries and progressive passes is really low, very poor in the air compared to the other 2 also - https://aws.fbref.com/en/players/dd3c8b64/Max-Balard

It's good to see these young players come over for a camp. By no means are they near selection but exposure to the set up is a good thing. Once any of these talents hit 18, we need to look at ways of capping them in preliminary games to avoid the drama.

I reckon he is working on a move.
I'd get that yet if he's asked Popovic to skip the camp while be on the fringes, it's not screaming he wants to play for Australia. Camp selections are very much time based too given who is and isn't still in season. Hopefully Popovic said Triantis is in the squad and he's allowed time to sort his affairs.

Can a journalist just ask Popovic straight up what's going on with Triantis?

He looked dejected in the background when Teague had his cap ceremony. We shouldn't pamper them but the way Triantis and Balard have built so much merit only to see Brattan and Caceres play must be frustrating.

I will just about top myself if Triantis rejects us for Greece.

He's the one I most wanted selected in the last few years - him and Irankunda.
I've just recovered from a virus but this news makes me feel sick again. So so frustrating. Triantis is one who will succeed and seeing him in a Greek or EPL shirt but not available for us will be painful.

Surely the camp is more about bringing in players that are close to selection & blooding younger players that have a chance to make the squad in the future? Let's be real - Bonetig, Esposito & Okon-Engstler aren't going to make the squad next month. Like you said, Triantis would've been told that he's in the squad. If it turns out that Greece has got in there in front of us, then the only person to blame is Popovic for not giving Triantis his debut against Indonesia & or China in March. If we fucking lose another one...
