World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

Ive rewatched the iran 97 home game, the uruguay 2001 away game and the italy 2006 game....need a couple more years before i can rewatch tat game against argentina or the knockout v south korea haha
Heartbreak list for me. Iran, then eternal daylight, Italy, and SK would be third. Live that SK game just had me thinking such a cruel game and so close. Cant remember exactly but had whoever charged the ball on the sideline it goes out for a throw and that sequence of play is over.

Stroll thoughts. Something ironic yet hopeful I thought of was how quickly Matthews entered the frame under Popovic. Velupillay he knows. Both warranted choices but definitely not two on the list when he took over.

Of course Popovic hopefully realises the urgency and potential of all those omitted. In turn, just maybe, he'll give some other less assuming types a go and they may prove very good alternatives. The addition of Matthews and Geria along with recognition of Iredale has bolstered our defensive stocks. They felt very thin before. He mention the close monitoring of Circati and I don't think being an ex centre back even adds to how bloody necessary it is that he be called up.

I hope Rowles and O'Neill can get a reprieve from their late Sunday games in the US. Rushing for a Thursday match in Perth, while normal, isn't ideal in this window that should see now player with jetlag.

To be honest, I wouldn't be bothered if both were left out but it's not going to happen.
Rowles an experienced lcb gives poppa an option. Jetlag from usa to perth though is brutal

Just checked. Caceres, Geria, Rowles and Burgess at risk of suspension on yellows. We've got enough variation for two games. I feel Iredale should maybe come in for Rowles to give us that extra left back coverage. I'd start Gersbach given his form Bos high up did well against Japan.

Why am I the only one who thinks the player on the ground in the lead-up to Iran's first goal was offside?

Just rewatched the highlights... the ball is played through by an Iranian to a player on the ground in an offside position who plays it across the box to the scorer.

On the night, I was screaming offside.

And I'm still screaming today.

This hadn't occurred to me about a year ago. We were so traumatised that it wiped anything from before. I' amazed how none of our highly professional players didn't pick up on it immediately, let alone try a lazy claim to the linesman.

Yeah nothing seems as bad after Iran.

Is it possible we could have the decision reviewed and the entire 1998 tournament replayed?

Var would mean qualifying in 1998 but missong out in 2006. Worth it? Haha
