World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

Hence my aggravation with Ryan.
Gauci turned it over against China too. Japan last night. I simply wish teams would stop this when they can't. You pay too dearly otherwise.

I feel every team get so wound up in training with the quick restarts that they forget it's game day and do the same negligent shit again and again. Dumb stuff. You see too it goes to a centre back a metre away, back to keeper, to wing and gets turned over. Just go long and then it over in a safe area then.

Nail on head.

What I noticed last night was a severe lack of 3rd man runs. Japan had 2 or 3 options every time, we had 1 IF we were lucky. Ball would get played into one of our players feet and he'd have literally no one to pass it to.

Also on long balls, they're fine to 'nod on' if there's someone nearby. Boyle and then Duke were isolated pretty much all night. I don't know exactly but surely Boyle didn't touch the ball more than 5 times last night in the first hafl.
Japan are at something that could be described as layering. The right wing will pass back and they'll go once more central but that winger lingers in a perfect diagonal spot allowing for a swift ball straight back allowing another flank attack.

They'll layer their options and they appear and get implemented like turning pages in a book.

Some Japan players stood free with their hands open and dismay at not receiving the ball. That's how free they were at times.

Our issue is we like to pass with our ankle bone so the ball bobs up every time.

Gauci has yet to cough it up to an Argentinian so he has that going for him.
All started by a Behich backpass when he had two options ahead of him. Ryan made the mistake and we've acknowledged that but he hasn't made such an error since despite the nervy situations at the back.

It's not going to be taken out of the game plan by any coach which is annoying. Honestly, I'd only trust Hiddink to actually identify and eradicate something. Everyone else is obsessed with it despite the risk.

Last night the pitch looked spongy and I fear Burgess would stub his heel and fall. Why do we persist with this type of play?

In hindsight we needed the wingers and Borrello to move a lot more. Very static last night. Yazbek and McGree certainly shifted Japanese lines a bit more. Not exactly successful ht there was change. I felt the final 25 was managed well.

I'm being petty because I was in the stadium when we copped that goal and I'm finding it hard to move on. (Yes I have problems.)

My thing is I don't think he looks that confident with the ball at his feet and even when we do play out short we can't get over the half way line. If that's the case lump the fucker forward to Duke or Borello and have 1 bloke running off him forward and one off sideways.

I don't know. I realise we don't want to regress to hoofing the fuck out of it but if we're literally not getting it over the halfway line then they need to change it up.

Now don't someone else come in and say when we lumped it forward Japan just collected it. That's because Ryan was belting it to a lone striker.

One other thing. We were comprehensively outmuscled by Japan last night. They're not bigger than us BUT they are very clever at using their bodies for maximum purchase to bully us around. That's a bitter pill to have to swallow.

I understand the Popa hate (regarding some of the football being played) & some questionable selections.

However, I think some people are giving the SPL way too much credit, honestly outside of Celtic, I do not rate the quality of football played at all in this league. The biggest positive to come out of players moving here is that they're next door to England which would potentially put them in the shop window. I think Boyle's performances as well as Miller's against better, more structured opposition is testament to this. They arguably haven't performed at a consistent, decent level for the Socceroos, and how can you be expected to when you are playing such low quality opposition every few week's at club level?

Japan are an awesome team, we'd be blessed to have that depth. I think Popa has done a good job, considering the injuries we've had to endure, as well as the state of the team when he came in. The time to completely regenerate the squad hasn't come yet. I think this test will come after we definitely qualify.

In saying this he has blooded some new, young players. He obviously sees something behind the scenes that most of us don't, and hats off to him, he has gotten results.

On last night's game, it was always going to be tough, Japan's press was immense, they have some unbelievable talent coming through. We were very hard to play through which is great, most of their shots were outside of the box, and outside of Kubo's effort I never really felt like we didn't have them covered.

Circati is already a superstar and bleeds for the Socceroos, I love to see it. Metcalfe is one selection I don't understand. Honestly he is a Temu Irvine, just without the aerial ability or the nose for goal. Touch woeful and doesn't really provide anything outside of work rate.

Subs at half time were on point, every player Popa brought on made a difference, especially in that moment that won us the game.

Hats off to the staff and the boys, we go again next week.

Some of their overlapping play on the wings, particularly the right, last night was sublime.... absolutely wonderful, intuitive positioning...

If you had that, week in week out, at your club side, EVERY fan would be happy to enjoy...

Gauci was exposed on the ball in his last match unfortunately. Hopefully he is working on this.

You don't think of Japan as a physical side, but they are sneaky fuckers and get a foot in the back every single time, right on the edge of giving away a foul or a card. Despite double the number of passes, they had 13 fouls to our 8.

Yeah physicality has crept into their game over the last 4-5 years.... I reckon it has a lot to do with more of their players playing in Europe.. Like Muz said, they arent bigger than our boys, just know how to dish it our more effectively maybe?

Japan were robust which was helped by our willingness to go to ground easily. If we had Triantis and Balard we'd be tougher. Snippets showed how stuck in our back 3 got.

Lower centre of gravity and wider base of support allows for a decent punch.

That's exactly it. In engineering terms our CoG is higher so they actually need less effort, relatively, to move us. BUT that doesn't mean they can be weaker. They're definitely as strong on the ball, or stronger, than us.

No, even with a 9-5 win, or even 19-15, Australia will go through, as if GD is equal the next tiebreaker is goals scored. Any 4 goal victory margin by Saudi will still have Australia having higher goals scored.
Yes, that's why I brought up 9-5. This would put Saudi Arabia ahead on goals scored.

Ah wait.. I keep forgetting there's always an extra layer because it's us vs them, you're right! I didn't account for how many goals we'd score as well...

Ha felt like Hill had an undertone of 'God this has been exhausting' when we scored. Glad he got one more big moment. One more game against Saudi for him. Contractually probably impossible but it'd be great to invite him for national team games.
Would be great if he signed one-off deals to do the World Cups for us

there are ways to play out without the skills via set plays you see it from the lower teams in the EPL alot Ipswich were quite good at it Where Delap was the target man but the wingers ran particular lines to create space and the midfield pushed up to win the 2nd ball. There are options out there. We should have a similar set play for when we struggle to play out.
