World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

What's everyone's thoughts on the amusing irony we get to go to Saudi and fake injury, roll on ground, scream in pain and just generally act like pricks? Hope the boys don't miss out on returning this sort of nonsense.
The only diving from Saudi will be in the box. It's going to be hilarious how we slow our goal kicks. They'll forget what pain is. Want to win this game. Not really one for testing unless we're a goal up with 30 to go.

Wouldn't mind seeing Tilio get a start. He's good for counters. You'd expect Saudi to leave a lot of space given they should attack. Hope we can get an early lead as that means Saudi will either give up or overstretch even more.

Wish Izzo could get a game. Maybe give him a debut in the final 20. I know it may come across as tacky or not the most faithful way to give a keeper a debut but at least it's in a points game and not a friendly.

The greatest fealing will be the booing.

As an ex victory player, I'm surprised Popa didn't start him vs Japan.

If we go into this game with a mindset of anything other than to win the bloody game we expose ourselves to all sorts of failure.

There are no easy games here.

We are not in the World Cup yet.

We go into this game thinking we only need a draw , or conceding a goal isn't that bad, and we could be hearing how fantastic it is for the Saudi's to have come back from such a huge goal deficit. We start trying to change our mindsets to play like them; faking injury, diving, slowing the clock and the like and, as much as it is a hilarious bit of karma, we lose our focus and are in trouble.

We should count on them getting at least 2 penalty shots with the crowd and their tactics - so they only need 3 goals in open play. They score the first goal early and our defenders start to get nervy. Then we lunge in as we do...penalty. How secure does that five goal buffer feel to the boys then in that deafening, aggressive stadium?

The good thing is Popa will have their heads screwed on right though. It will be another core defensive game but hopefully with at least 3 active forwards and 2 of them with an eye for goal not just an eye for breaking up play. If he sets up and plays for 10 behind the ball to defend our table lead (as he has been prone to do in the aleague) we are doomed to watching them pick and scheme and dive their way into a closer game than we want.

Home team, huge crowd behind them, must win game - they are the Socceroos playing against us in effect. We would be thinking we can do it if we had their team and those circumstances.

We will win the game though. Because we are the Socceroos and they aren't.

Business as usual boys. This game is the only one that counts.

Popa 4 from 4 after this game.

What we do need to watch out for are red cards and red card penalties. We can afford to sit reasonably deep to avoid silly situations of DOGSO. If we go a goal and a man down, we'll start parking the bus and feeling it.

54 guests on forum right now. Wish I'd glanced during the match Thursday.

I like Miller but he is one player in our line up who could give away a penalty or worse still get red carded.Geria is calmer so it might be wiser to start him.

Miller's a good player against teams we expect to beat because he gets in crosses and even scores himself occasionally.

I don't trust him against the better teams. Makes rash decisions and is always losing his man.

Also says he was only in previous squad due to the Yengi injury.
Duke came in for China as Taggart was out. Handy play late against Japan I guess. Better than Borrello. He's certainly got to be considered an emergency fill in. We've got to get the A League cohort, Iredale and Yengi more often in the squad and start feeding them.

Although neither Borello nor Duke are my preferred choice (I prefer Botic), in this window whose performance would you rate higher Borello or Duke?

Socceroos still no match for the NRL and AFL TV viewing figures.

FOOTBALL: SOCCEROOS V JAPAN 10 1,190,000

My list of moments in the player rating thread for the first half shows how poor Borrello was. Duke came on and did a job. I was annoyed with his constant falling however when distributing could've seen interesting attacks.
