The Australian Championship Thread

Melbourne Knights commentary on the white paper from six years ago. The Knights always seem to impress me with their vision.

Probably the only thing I would adjust in this response is that they want pro\rel with NPL immediately but have the NST aligned with A-League... That's not possible without butchering clubs' seasons, as I explained earlier. Clubs that are relegated would have to miss entire seasons.

The only way pro\rel will work is either have all the pyramid aligned with A-League, or have the NST season in the middle of the NPL and A-League seasons. I can't see the lower tiers shifting to summer, so the "inbetween" NST is the most feasible option.
Their stubborn as shit down at Somers Street, but its all about the football.......

Are we not surprised by the closed minded inexperienced ones
Not an open minded community that’s for sure, what’s their intention for being against it I wonder? The title of the thread says it all too.

I think it is common to see p and r as threatening the viability of a professional league

having a pro league is a bigger step up in Australia because of travel distances and the expensive massive stadiums

I think its a lot of half baked opinions, some a-league folks can never understand the desire and want for unification. Theres a lot of pre conceived notion about followers of NSL clubs, they tend to think we think like mike..
Yep a lot of vendetta types out there, I just think they don’t offer any solutions if they think pro-rel and the NSD is not the answer.

Narrow minded bunch.

Oh the NSD won't fix 90% of the leagues problems, but it’s a minimum requirement that we fail to do.
It’s not like the current a-league model is in a great shape either, if people can’t acknowledge there is a problem with it then it’s not a good sign.

The NSD is just a starting point for unifying the sport not some threat within the game which it seems they believe in it seems.

to be fair a few of them believe you should expand the a league until you get a1 and a2. That sounds like a harder path tbh. Having said that, whatever path gets us to 30+ clubs then hopefully some steps towards p&r

Correct, its a much bigger set up. But the a-league is just barely viable to keep chugging along. But fuck we have tried everything so far except for pro / rel.
yeah I guess that arguement can go both ways. Some people get more conservative in hard times "the a league is barely viable as it is, why make it harder with an nst and p&r"

As long there is a path for it, that has to be the long term goal for the sport anyone against it probably doesn’t understand how important it is to have it.

The question I would be asking them is a good look to have clubs like Brisbane, Perth and even the Jets who look uncompetitive?

Curious how much of a difference it will make. My way too optimistic list if problems it will help -
1) patches up the leaky pipeline (slightly) of players leaving the game from 15-17. At the moment if you dont make an a league academy by 15 too many give up and leave the game. But if you are in a nst youth squad maybe you think you have another pathway and stay
2) makes npl clubs more ambitious in improving their quality and youth development
3) provides a loan opportunity for fringe a league youth so they can develop quicker
4) provides a buffer league so that collapsing a league clubs (fury/gcu) can go there rather than the npl
5) provides an additional source of a league expansion apart from expansion if any club really does well off the field
6) makes p&r less scary (but still probably hard to convince a lot of people)
7) makes another talent pool for the a league to improve their weakest positions

This in many ways…..
The probs are countless from past to present but the main issue for the game is being 1 !
1 vision
1 direction all clubs follow and synced to below for developments and growth.
HTF these close minded idiots can’t see for the great of the game to evolve and Roos importantly its what it should be about.
It’s so fractured and the FA to this day is weak and hands tied.
Really sad that here in 2025 we have this divide in the game and fans.

Probably a response of "the league is already too small and clubs like brisbane, perth and jets are barely holding on. They would die in the npl. You can't just replace them with other teams either because they are still getting bigger crowds than most nsl clubs did". I think most aleague reddit people see p&r as a luxury rather than a wise investment

How do we think a conference set up would work?
I've said it before - you can't have a conference set up with the state based model. There's too much logistics to make it work. Only way to make it work with the current landscape, is that once a club reaches that 'conference' league, they are not recognised as a club from a specific state for that purpose. If that makes sense.

Ok you changed my mind it will fix 15% of the leagues issues, but we are speculating that the league will be ran well sort of? Idk I hope its successful.
are we unique in running our leagues badly? If so why?
You would think that if the apl runs the a league and the fa runs the nst that on average at least one of those leagues is run ok at any one time haha
