Official South Melbourne Hellas thread 🔵⚪

That result may come back to bite us.

We were moments away from a 6 point advantage from the relegation zone. Now we are only 4 points ahead of 12th spot.

Really poor defending at the end. What was Evans doing ?? I’m not saying to throw everyone up the line, but don’t stop pushing forward.

The most annoying thing is that South showed glimpses of good football with some nice ball movement. In the end, we dropped 2 points.

We have 3 straight home fixtures against Preston, Dandenong Thunder and Hume City.

We need to lock in at least 5 points from those fixtures. That would get us up to 21 points. And we still need other results to go our way to help us.

After the 3 home games coming up we have to get up to 20-21 points. I still think 25 points will be enough. Its in our hands the next few weeks but what an opportunity missed to put a massive gap on the rest. Its such a shame our defence has turned to shit this year...the past 5 years if we were up 2-0 you locked in the win. We just cant stop conceeding, thankfully we are starting to score at least.

6 of our remaining 9 games are at Lakeside.

Very good 1st half off the back of last weeks 2nd half and then ........ Wrong substitutions/tactics in that second half yesterday, and we paid for it like armatures!
Frustrating we cant put in a 90 minute performance.

Our squad is so much better than St Albans but its always going to go back to us refusing to get a coach. Sinisa cost us last night and he lost us the Port game.

We need our individual talent to drag us over the line. That means washed up players like Morgan Evans no longer see the pitch.

Have to beat Preston to make up for last night.

Absolutely.....

That type of defensive performance against Preston will mean disaster, especially without a solid anchor in midfield to absorb part of the initial pressure and allow our suddenly "slow & wonky" defence the needed time to adjust... Preston cant defend quick transitional play as the bergers showed again last night (lesiotis and yokakawa play 90 mins constant pressure).. we sub off Mells etc instead of adjusting the midfield and we cut our team in half and thats again a coaching issue more than anything.

Like other said it was clearly a game of two halves... Mells was dynamic and hard pressing for 45 minutes and it relfected on the opithc... Dinamo couldnt cope with our hard press .... but we clearly didnt have the gass to do teh same second half and shouldnt have tried.... AND then dropped off to this lame arse low press to defend a shinly lead...... Evans had a terrible game but otherwise we SHOULD have kept the three points... it was a bottle job plain and simple.... Anything less than a draw on Sunday is failure.

I dont give a shit how many rock up to the match, or how many mounted police are there to protect us from the hordes of invading Preston fans, I just want is to put together more than an hour of what we did at St Abans ....

Yes I agree. And its our only chance of silverware( Dockerty Cup )...
Back to back Dockerty Cups would be cool but to be honest, not fussed at all if we lose tonight... We've got a relegation battle on our hands and an Australian Championship to build for... bigger fish to fry in my opinion.

Interesting to see what line up we put out tonight. I think the board will want to make the Round of 32 for the exposure the club gets
Not necessarily the sort of exposure we crave this year though.. getting to the national rounds and being smacked by a high flying interstate nobody will put a dent in our season (even worse than the hole we are in already)

Even if we make the dockerty cup semis teams like heidelberg and avondale/thunder likely await.

I'd like a win tonight more to prove that we can actually beat a team thats a fair bit higher than us, thats what its going to have to take in the coming weeks.
Fair call.... Im a little torn though.. Do we go all out and risk tiring out walking wounded players for this or keep them "on ice" for Preston on Sunday and give the youngsters another crack?

Staying up in the league is by no means guaranteed and it doesn't sound like we have any new recruits starting for at least the next 2-3 weeks?

The last time we rested players prior to a Preston game was a disaster.

Any game comes with a risk but considering the game is on Sunday thats still a decent rest. Different story if we were playing on Friday night.

Menelaou would be ideal for when we tire, full 90 minute runner and a decent closer.. its a good op to finally add depth on the cheap if we gotten atleast those 2 relased by MV ie him and siciliano .. Even Monge could come in (although this creates midfield overload) on the cheap and after a full season on a team that doesnt stop running all with NPL experience. This overly plugs our midfield and second keeper holes and then all the more money to spend on our striker needs imo ...

Im turning into a bit of a broken record, but its basic logic that makes so much sense without needing to break the budget in some major way and covers your through to NST..
