I know he won a epl title but I never hear about his legacy as a player. Obviously these days you think of him as a pundit

I remember reading a great article on Slaters career. He was loved in Lens, who are a working class team. He represented what they were, hard working. I tried to find the article but no luck.I know he won a epl title but I never hear about his legacy as a player. Obviously these days you think of him as a pundit
I was at the Sydney game.Slater had a top game-gave the Argentinian LB a hard time-was the best game he ever played for the Socceroos. So yes on that performance alone against top quality opposition he should be rated amongst our best players.I remember reading a great article on Slaters career. Found this though and it was a good read. Had Maradona's respect: https://wwos.nine.com.au/football/d...-tribute/3bee93bf-a2eb-4068-a61d-6e89f42aa9cc
He was.Long time ago but I remember thinking he was one of our better players, in his era.
Yes he was hard working & tough in an era where British managers ruled the roost in the EPL, Slater thrived, nowadays where Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch managers ruled the roost where hard work is still required, but you also need high technical ability, he would not get a look in.He was.
And streets ahead of the dross we've been putting out for the last 15 to 20 years.
Also, wasn't the sort of Socceroo that would go on strike or end up in a Tahitian gaol.

This is correct.Correct me if I'm wrong but when Foster agitated to go on strike for better conditions and pay during the Tahiti days Slater told Foster to get fucked and told him not to do it.
Am I remembering that correctly?
its not about comparing to todays game robbos.Yes he was hard working & tough in an era where British managers ruled the roost in the EPL, Slater thrived, nowadays where Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch managers ruled the roost where hard work is still required, but you also need high technical ability, he would not get a look in.
