Not sure about that for that time though. This was back in the day when players were literally paying for their own airfares to play for Australia sometimes.

Someone had to take a stand.

I've more respect for Foster over Slater in this instance.

Some of the smack he talks about the Matildas is near abuse. For example he called them spoilt because they travelled business class to the Olympics and stayed at a nice facility. Nothing less than what you'd expect for the blokes or any professional team representing their country.

Caused a massive pile-on online.

He's a clown with an axe to grind. And that's not to mention his relationship with Arnold and his belligerence to critics with any criticism of him.

I'm not online/SM mediums Muz so I don't see that.
Well I got to say re the travelling, if one code is in biz class well that set the precident, what about all the other athletes in green and gold.
Facilities I'm not that concerned but fairs fair.
He wasn't called Bulldog for nothing lol, Muz we all have our likes and dislikes how people come across - he bites back pun not intended.
IMO he isn't worth bothering getting uptight about, small fish.

LFC, yes he was a wonderful player in his time, well respected in the NSL, great seasons in Lens, won premiership with Blackburn & stalwart for Australia. I am not doubting that.
He is a crap pundit & analyst of the game, the game has moved on but he hasn't. His constant criticism of the game is all wrong, respect that he can have his views, but they come across bitter.

Look at that young kid Quintal for SFC, these are the players we are looking for, now does he have the mental attitude & temperament to make it in the big time, I have no idea, but his first touch is very high standard, he seems to have time, its not a rush.
 
yep agreed mate, like I said overall I just take his comments with a grain of salt, hardly hear him since the Fox change in any case.
He's in the past I don't really care but I don't think a good player of the past needs to keep copping shit I'd sooner talk of the positives they did.
Thread isn't about players right now no point, if he can't see and admire his prob.
 
I've met both Slater and Foster. Slater at least was friendly and happy to talk football.

Foster was aloof, looked over your shoulder the whole time looking for someone more important to talk to. Even with his activist work you can't help but feel that it's all about him and his corporate/political future.

Reminded me very much, in fact, of Peter Garrett who (despite being my favourite Aussie frontman of all time) avoids the hoi polloi like the plague - speaks in slogans, if he speaks at all - and (was) only interested in people who could help his political future. (How federal politics must have broken his heart...)
 
The thing that bothered me most about Slater (aside from his complete lack of perspective about his mates) was he has never attempted to learn and improve his punditry by getting educated and completing pro-licences (as far as I am aware). Foster has an AFC pro-licence and coached NSW rep sides. You could see the evolution in his analysis work from when he ranted at Ange with a sole focus on results, through to the more recent interviews he conducted with Ange. It feels like you could copy a piece of Slater analysis at the start of the Aleague and it would be pretty much unchanged to today. I feel if you work 3 days a week for six months a year you should spend some of the down time improving at what you do.

As a player you don't make the EPL without having quality that would make you successful in any era, even if the EPL has progressed in leaps and bounds since his day.

I've met both on social occasions many times, and your experiences are very similar to mine.

Foster is the ultimate wanker.

yes I hear you, I've met Foster a couple of times at golf days, infact having yaks between warm up shots on the driving range so spent some time twice.
He is exactely as you described haha - to me I call him a pollie.
Whereas as mentioned re Slater on a earlier post, he's just your average joe, yep C S, you'd think he would improve his punditry after all this time but seems he don't give a toss take me as I am.

I couldn't tell you the exact team and I haven't heard if he is still involved. There was footage maybe 10 years ago now? He was coaching under 16s or around that age group and then transitioned to coaching a similar age group in women's. The video was interesting because it was Foster addressing the team and basically saying firstly were here to win, and then talking about the way they will do it and continue to develop them as players in the process.

Yeah agree, he was a very good player back then & great for the Socceroos.

Tarnished by his punditry & criticism. Just me mate.

Tip; the only team Foster has coached was Sydney Lokomotiv (SFC Cove deadbeats).

You maybe confusing Foster with his brother Paul.
 
LFC, see to me, you don't like something, don't get involved, do something else, don't stop the enjoyment for others.
Or if you do like it & have a an issue, look for positive criticism, look to see where you can improve, especially, someone like him who has influences & friends (Arnie) in influential positions, but he just comes across bitter & twisted.

I always thought when the media wanted someone to complain or whinge that back in their day everything was different they would go one or two people with an axe to grind, Neil Harvey back in the day for cricket was one the media would go to if they wanted a negative view on the game or the current players (this was back in the 80s & 90s) & I think they do that with Slater now in football, especially the Matildas, who are riding on a cloud.
