World Cup 2026 Australia thread

Historically a foreign coach has never won a World Cup, Belgium was close with Martinez but the furthest they went was the semi finals.
Korea too with Hiddink..

Though technically the closest was Ernst Happel taking Netherlands to the 1978 Final, and George Raynor taking Sweden to the 1958 Final

3 proposals for rule changes at WC being considered by FIFA. VAR to be abke to rule in 2nd yellows that are contentious- thought that was already a thing. Also abke to rule on corner awarding errors when a goal is scored from it.

Non shoot out penalties to be a single shot with no secondary play after rebounds permitted.

I like the last one.

I don't.

Although, actually would be a lot easier to referee as no need to worry about encroachment from the non-taking players.

Don't think it was - they could only get involved on a direct red card - whether that's to award one, or rescind one and award a yellow instead. Although, I am quite sure there's been a couple instances (I'm thinking in the MLS) where the referee has "HOOOOWWWEVERRRRRR"-ed the second yellow card after rescinding the initial red card.

I don’t like the penalty one either. It means that a penalty is not part of the continuous flow of the game, it is a discrete action where play can’t continue immediately afterwards like all other restarts (free kicks, corners, throw ins). It fundamentally changes the nature of football, in my view.

It is very basketball/Americanising the game, isn't it?

In Basketball, I know that free throws are usually given in 2: if the second one misses, is it a continuous play from there?

Not sure I like the penalty one - but it does raise the pressure on the penalty taker and evens the contest a bit.

I'm not sure how restricting review of corner decisions when a goal is scored from one. It would be better to do a check on the run for all corners. Doesn't make much sense waiting to annul a goal.

I think covers off when the attacking team takes a quick corner, and by letter of the law, means that the VAR is unable to intervene. Will only be for corners that result in a goal it seems - so that I'm ok with (as long as the goal is very quickly after the corner, and not like minutes later)

I just think it's a really big penalty when you can get two bites at the cherry. It's too big an advantage.

But you don’t necessarily get two bites at the cherry. Any rebound from a penalty kick can be played at by anyone, from either team, except by the kicker until the ball has been touched by another player. I don’t know the stats, but I would think it is only the relatively small minority of penalty kicks which are scored from after missing first time.

Sorry didn't see you already posted this. Good to hear these guys are being given a pathway forward.
He'll have said to Nizz: If you want to be picked for the Socceroos, just grow another six inches. In fact, just one inch would do... that's your challenge.
