G&G FC Podcast: #14 – Tom Byer on Japan's Football Revolution

It is interesting to hear from full time analysts not involved in Australia (One from Bulgaria and one from the UK). We are still behind the very elite technically (barcalona etc) but have caught up quite a bit to the next tier down but we are now remedial athletically. One person who works in Australia said that the lack of full time coaches means we can't develop both technical and physical qualities to an acceptable level without full time coaches and we don't have many of them. Many have also pointed to the length of the season as a limiting factor too. The State academies were apparently an attempt to increase the number of full time coaches and I believe were Ernie Merrick's baby. Curious if they stay around when he leaves

D,
The general Japanese Chinese citizen would naturally show respect towards each other BUT politcally they are at each other for decades let alone century.
CCP wants to rule the ocean and this infuriates Japan, the properganda I have read in the China Daily for over 20yrs during my trips.
Territorial disputes, political tensions are very strong, the 2nd Sino war between them - the Senkaku Islands administered by Japan but claimed by China/Taiwan , there is lingering resentment on many fronts.
Your english friend from decades ago mustn't know much of the history.
I think it was about 40 odd years ago.

Another friend lived in Japan in more recent times.

They said history is an important criterion for Japanese to rate others.

I know Japan invaded China in WW2. International alliances change over time too.

I’m assuming the C and J leagues recruit from the opposite country?

As a neutral some would be sad, but from a parochial perspective I am delighted Aus gained 4 points!
Zero or very few Chinese play in the J-League or K-League. The Chinese footballers just aren’t rated, and China as a whole is disliked. A few Japanese players play in the Chinese Super League, because they are good players. The Chinese for historical reasons and CCP propaganda to this day dislike the Japanese, and (South) Koreans (China under Mao supplied thousands of Chinese soldiers that were cannon fodder to prop up North Korea in the Korean War). The (South) Koreans dislike both Japan and China, Japan because they occupied Korea for 60 years and China for the Korean War and because the CCP are often pricks. They have a lot more in common culturally with Japan than with China. Imagine an alternate reality where New Zealand invaded, brutally occupied for more than ten years, and massacred hundreds of thousands of Australians and almost won the war if not for a Pacific coalition and American nukes? Australians young and old would still hold a grudge against those upstart Kiwis and it would be far worse than just wanting to beat them at rugby and cricket!

the 3 points were a regular way of mucking around at home even before HK made it around our backyards.
Day in day out if your into football as a kid you were outside kicking the ball.
My mum would get pissed how many plants got ruined and I'm sure she wasn't alone.
As you got a little older after school you'd be down the local park playing ball games with the many locals,.
I mentioned hand eye co ordination before, you'd give some time playing cricket at the nets one end of the oval, then another group would be playing football, another group would be playing forcings back with a eggball.
All this variety trained ball sense, how/when to move/competition.
Many kids could pick either sport they would excell at - hence why we here are pretty good at alot of sports unlike other countries where football is No1 full stop period..
Oh then we'd all rush home by 6ish for dinner.

Parents today are too scared and protective allowing their kids play at the local park like the ol days.
Hence academys having grown so much, as good as it is to be professionally trained it takes away just play for "fun" aspect.
the pressure on parents to be protective is immense. We got warned recently when we took a walk around the block with our 2.5 year old (leaving our 8 and 10 year old at home for 15 minutes) that child protective services don't look kindly at that

I think it's bad for the kids long term mental health as well as putting more pressure on parents. The pressure on parents these days is one of the major causes of plummeting birth rates

Again you've made these very interesting points off forum.

I'm out of the loop these days, but it may be the case that specific athletic training is now a much bigger part of coaching in player development than before - plyometrics and weight training. I know a lot about the latter, but barely anything about the former.

I must start attending the FA National Conferences again.

Length of season:

AL - about 26 games?

Eredivisie - 34 games.

Championship and League 1 - 46 games?

I'm concerned with risk of injury for the latter. Although if a player is injured for the first half of a season, to play 23 games in the second half of the season is a big plus.

AL considered too short, although if a team plays ACL it is closer to an ideal 34 - 38 games. Is this ideal? Also, if they play national team football that adds more games.
34 games means mid week games too which usually means more use of the fringe players in your squad - typically young
Arnie talked about the season length pretty much every press conference

You dont really know much about Asia do you mate? I sincerely doubt anyone in China, Thailand, Laos, or both Koreas would be favouring Japan anytime soon.
Growing up I had Japanese friends that said Chinese have never invented anything, they just copy japan and listed all the so called Chinese things that were allegedly originating in Japan
later I had Chinese friends making the same claim roles reversed!

No its not.
indeed, defense is half the game
The football purist surely regards a good defensive performance the way a cricket purist would enjoy a tough session with batters surviving at a run rate of less than 2 an over

Yep. I’ve even heard Chinese people say that the Japanese “stole” characters from China, instead of being proud of another country/culture admiring and adopting their writing system. I lived in Japan 3.5 years and China 20 years.

Sounds similar to Greeks and Italians ....except Greeks are right of course :P

Do you think Sabah FC’s new signing Dean Pelekanos from WSW will feel conflicted? Scott Ollerenshaw - the ginger Maradona - is Sabah’s Technical Director, and they also recently signed Dane Ingham (who was born in Aus but played for NZ). The only other Aussies are Giancarlo Giafucco and Dylan Denzel-Halls in the Malaysian Super League I think.

Thought you’d appreciate that I’m going to Sabah FC’s opening fixture against Melaka FC Mono…………
Thats gold... I had heard of Melaka United but I see they have "evolved" now and their new logos is soo much better...

Enjoy ... I should get a jersey, they are my Malaysian team now for sure :)

Mum had to drive 5min back to McDonald's to get more Fanta as it had all fallen over in the car. I was left at home and this was just after Jurassic Park had been released so feeling Velociraptors were in the house was traumatising.

Healthy routines for parents where being active in a passive sense should be enough. What I mean is going for a walk and taking the ball. People go out and buy all the fancy clothes for the gym only to not work out. Kids don't need to be signed up for the fancy 5 a side just yet.

Glad I grew up when I did. Could go missing for hours.

Me too - go out with a ball. Jumpers for goal posts if a proper field can't be found.

Thanks for that.

So it isn't spread over 34 weeks?

Arnie talked about it a lot.
