A-League analyst and scouting insider Petar Petrov joins Green and Gold FC to unpack what international scouts really think about Aussie talent and why the league’s development system needs a shake-up. Plus, Harry from AusFootHQ runs through the week’s biggest headlines, including Irankunda’s $2.6M move to Watford.

Had a listen at start. Will continue later. Was always tricky for me to work out where Petar was located given his absolute prominence on Sokkah twitter.

Now I’ve finished it! Quality guests, Grazor. Good questions put forward by you.

Was interested that Peter thought off the ball pressure in Squeezing and Pressing was lower than overseas leagues? Possibly, a factor is that our AL is played in summer.

I’m happy with English League 1 comparison - from, as Grazor suggested on the podcast - an impartial, but insightful, perspective.

It was interesting to say Peter, speaking impartially, thinks AL, English League 1 and Scotland ( outside the two big Glasgow clubs) are similar in standard.

Peter anointed the AL and League 1 as a higher technical standard than Scotland. Moreover, that Scottish fans would be very unhappy that they are only considered the same quality as L1 and the AL , because they perceive themselves as much better.

From viewing the Scottish league myself, compared to Wrexham, Celtic and the AL, the off the ball movement by players when teams have the ball, is petty poor. The coaching in this facet of play is poor too, when teams have the ball. They've been left behind.
Conversely, Celtic look a million dollars! Superb football style!

Where Scotttish players are good is 1v1 heading duels, tackling, and body on body duels in the transitions, or contested ball phase of play.

They are probably pretty good as team units at holding compact shape in Ball Possession Opposition too.

If Wrexham are typical of the average L1 team, which by finishing 3rd in L1 and progressing to the Champ, they are probably better, then L 1 has improved immeasurably since I saw it when Fox had the viewing rights. Ditto the Championship, which was essentially a hoofball league.

Peter also contends that the AL has less intense Squeezing and Pressing off the ball pressure in Ball Possession Opposition. Is that because we play in summer - and - compared to Europe we live in a much hotter climate?

Peter also really knew a great deal about a lot of our Aussie players.

Probably partly the heat and partly the season length. A couple of other scouts have raised concern about the amount of time and space u get in the a league and suggested the season length is an important factor

Petar and hancock both said the a league is technically very good, but athletically remedial and thats another thing that season length can help with.

Petar also mentioned training longer with the ball rather than (extra?) gym work to physically catch up

Disappointed only 3 of us on G and G have responded to this superb Podcast.

I've seen paid media with panels of footballers, a lot to do with poor quality questions by supposed pro football journos, that haven't been anywhere near as good as this G and G Podcast 15!

I remember that athleticism was a bit down, but not remedial?

Wow!

I'd have to say in about 2012 Berger was so concerned about Aus football athletes, as opposed to football technicians, the most important criterion for us as rep coaches was to select players based on technical skill.

It was considered that everything else could be caught up later, or when players became older, apart from technical skill.

Previously, strength and athleticism, were paramount in the old days before 2006.

Not many, apart from close family.

Very few mates like football. That is why I'm on this forum.

I have a lot of mates who are much keener on cricket, but don't tend to post on forums.

A lot more mates again love Aussie Rules/AFL!

I've mentioned it to another Tas G and G member to attend a few Tas NPL games with me and solicit fans to join G and G. He wasn't keen!

Interestingly tom byer says we still could improve technically to catch up to the truly elite. At the moment there is apparently too much emphasis on improving elite players, but those players stagnant because the elite player pool is too small and there is too much gap between the elite players and those below so they stagnate. I heard a scout say off forum that they mentally stagnate too since elite players stop leaening how to play under pressure at 15 and stagnate until they can at least be npl regulars
