It's quite wild what social media companies can get away with. They are awash with copyright, illegal content, or much worse. At the tame end of the scale, how many fake ads with images or people used without their approval...and they make bank off it.

Im more concerned with direct interaction that young kids have with the "outside" world not to mention they bullying that happens.. It seems like every week or so you read of a 12-16 year old kid taking their lives because the non stop 24/7 harassment has become too much online ... breaks my fricken heart every single time....

Could you expand on how social media have negatively impacted children.

I don't doubt you at all, but just curious to hear it from the view point of a teacher.

There are a number of different things - I was a year coordinator so I've had to deal with a lot of the negative things. Negative interactions used to stop at school and you'd go home and have a break. Now it is constant. Physical and psychological threats. Young people don't have a fully developed brain so they'll say and do things that will have negative implications on others without truly understanding what the impacts are. They can range from self harm to suicide (in extreme cases). There were a number of incidents were the police were involved.

Easier access to illegal products such as drugs, weapons, etc. A lot happens on Snapchat and Instagram.

Sharing videos/ photos of minors happens which from my understanding is illegal. I'm not taking about pornographic material. That might be another issue in itself.

Impact on learning because social media is designed to be addictive. I had numerous meetings with parents about attendance cause they couldn't get their kids to get off the phone at night and they wouldn't wake up to get to school on time or at all. People can say its easy to control that but unless you have kids in that situation, you won't comprehend. They are almost like addicts. Think about what sort of habits they start to develop which will fester in adulthood - not turning up to work, addicted to substances, etc.

I could go on and on.

Thanks for sharing..... not trying to blow smoke up your arse but thank you for trying to do something about it.. As a parent, EVERYTHING you said terrifies me... and NO I have not be "weaponized" :)

Im just surprised at the question ... I thought it was agreed left, right, gay, bi, tri, communist, fascist etc etc that social media was rotting our children's brains and ruining their lives....

Despite our best effort one of my kids was addicted to fortnite. I mean addicted. Screaming, tantrums, banging stuff, crying and all the rest of it when we wouldn't let him play. Was a friggin nightmare. Right off the rails stuff. From what i read we weren't alone.

I've never been up close to a drug addict but there were articles online equating the behaviours.

You'd think it'd be as easy as turning it off but they're not always home so they play it for hours at their friends or they'd play when we were out or they'd play it when we were asleep.

We had to hide the controllers and that caused even more grief.

And all of their friends were on it. I mean all. They're socially outcast if you ban them.

Thats a poor take Lupi... "isolated children" relying on social media for interaction that is... Agree or disagree with unlimited social media access for our children all you want... Fact is that age restrictions aren't the "boogeyman" here.. NOBODY is weaponizing parents....

Of course it's a bad take. Would you expect anything less?

Nah I actually sort of understand the "Lupi's" of the world... I dont agree, but I understand.

The "fight" is more important than the war so to speak... It's a very US minded extension of individual freedom being more important than social harmony. That one farkin word "freedom" means so many differnt things to so many people sometimes.....

Ha. Reminds me of the video online where an Australian bloke pulls up for an RBT on his motorbike, he's filming on his go pro. The usual thing, hello we're doing a breath test today, yeah no worries, count to ten, you're good to go, cheers thanks.

The amount of unhinged Americans in the comments about improper search and seizure, no readily apparent motive, unlawfully detained etc is out of control.

Everyone else, from everywhere else in the world is, are you farking kidding? If this takes drunks off the road so they don't kill anyone then your 'detention' is a small price to pay.

The seppos are having none of it.

They're fucked. (Of course not all of them, just your hopped up freedumb clowns.)

Keating's 40 mil pay day.

imagine comparing social media digital ID to drink driving.... you're the same ilk that compared the MRNA shots and wearing a surgical mask in public to wearing a seatbelt

levels of stupid logic

There's no need for a strawman.

The only comparison is with MSC's comment about individual freedom being more important than social harmony. (With respect to Americans and retards like you.)

My example expanded on his point.

Do keep up.

@Pasquali , I wonder if small platforms like this website forum will be required to ascertain if users are under 16. Sheesh ... just going on some of the comments people make, even if their chronological-age is over 16, what about maturity-age? :p🤣😲

Seriously, though. Football is for all ages, particularly children and teenagers, and I would assume - from the maturity level of many comments on this forum -- that people could be under 16 masquerading as adults. How are small websites going to police the age requirement, for example, Muz and tsf ... Muz claims he's a consultant with experience in multi-storey construction, and tsf claims to have a university arts degree ... but what if ... the law requires indication of being over 16. 😸😙😁

And even more seriously, what are the legal consequences to small websites - presumably with no artificial intelligence algorithms - to figure out who are the under 16's ?

Imagine if you had to submit ID to some random admin you've never met. NAH

The government is working on some sort of digital ID that confirms who you are without sending data I've read.

One off codes? I can't remember the exact details. I'll try and find it.
