Expansion Thread

Two Aussie teams entered the S-League back in 1994. It was a disaster financially.

We don't need to look beyond our shores when we are yet to tap into SE Sydney, Sunshine Coast, Tasmania, Canberra etc.

Not to mention proper attempts into the GC and NQ/FNQ regions of Queensland.
Don't forget that NJ & PG were until recently under APL administration because their owners bailed out. If Canberra was such an option then why hasn't the club being announced? And proper attempts? I can't imagine that the Bulls & WU are not proper attempts - there is a lot of money involved.
Having a Singaporean club in Oz may be financially feasible, it just a question of exploring the options.

Yeah I think that league screwed over the Aussie clubs, they had them paying for all the flights and accommodation for the away teams!

Same with the talk about Tasmania. I mean, seriously, who is going to stump up 20+ million to put a team in Hobart to pull 3k per game in a state losing population (Decentric, I checked the most recent stats and population line is now negative) and zero capacity for financial growth? Is Canberra any different in the fundamentals? I suppose it does have the pop in one place as opposed to Tas where it is split in half.

Gold Coast is hands down the best expansion option in Australia or NZ right now. Having said that, absolutely no chatter about it.

Because no Gold Coast millionaire(s) have put their hands up. I’d like Gold Coast and Canberra……….

you think they'd get more than 3k per game at Gold Coast?

delusional

As much as I'd like to see a CBR team, the league needs to start looking at other areas in the interim. We were supposed to be at 16 after next season.
I'm still of the belief Wollongong needs to come in, WIN Stadium needs a summer tenant while the Dargons are in off season.

A second Brisbane team (ie. Strikers) is an absolute must, the Roar needs a rival and Perry Park needs an upgrade pronto.

Might be time put Canberra to bed, unlikely to happen.

The binfire that is Macarthur needs to go unless they merge with NPL side Macarthur Rams.

The Wolves should def have been admitted to the league before Macarthur Bulls were even an idea in anyone’s mind(I’m in favour of a total rebranding&relocation for them, BTW)

Adelaide also needs a second team; it and Brisbane sorely need crosstown-rivals for their existing sides.

A second Adelaide team would be absurd. Way too small and it's taken them until the last few years to get anywhere near capacity at Coopers.

Besides a very tiny band of NSL bitters there's no demand for a second team.

As I said in my previous reply Brisbane definitely needs a second team (ie. Strikers) and Wollongong needs to come in.

Macarthur needs to either merge with the Rams NPL team or fold.

Yeah pretty much this. We need to understand the markets, and Adelaide is one that won't succeed with a second club. It really is United by name and by nature. It might work in Perth or Brisbane, but not Adelaide. Definitely need a club or two from Adelaide in the Championship though.

I haven't been a fan of a second Brisbane team, but it's really growing on me. Brisbane is too big for the sport to disappear when Roar are sucking year after year.

Wollongong haven't had the financial backing. They're probably in a worse category than Canberra. I think it all depends on a rich owner, that's about it.

Gold Coast would be the next best spot for a rich owner. Their crowds would be bigger than Macarthur are WU. And Christchurch, but their rich owner recently said that A-League isn't affordable!

Something really not working with these huge licence fees.

That’s the point, no one is prepared pay outrageous fees to participate. Just look at the situation with Newcastle and Perth.
Admittedly they did find a billionaire with more money than sense but they are few and far between.

Adelaide's grown by the size of Wollongong since the Z-league began. What makes you think Wollongong needs to come in based on that?

Perth 2 would be a terrible idea.

The only reason that the Glory still get any semblance of crowds is due to the parochial support of the rusted ons with a couple thousand fairweathers.

Take away the fair weathers with a new club and you risk Glory simply folding altogether.

yer makes sense Vieri.
Besides be it west or east there isn't any ogarlords lining up for new franchise opennings by the look of it - the economic climate ahead won't help either.
Therefore a Perth Championship entry would be the direction to try grow new support would it not ?
