World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

I think we have to go 433 in this game given all the injuries to cbs, we cant play 3 6 1 without weakening the side. He likes to rotate players so I have indicated which players I'd rotate

-----------------ryan----------------
-strain/miller-burgess-rowles-behich/garuccio
----------irvine---triantis/oniell----
---------------luongo--------------------
-irankunda/villupilay-toure/yengi-goodwin

Not amazing by any stretch of the imagination but hopefully enough to get the job done. Would like a 2nd number 10
I remember Arnie used to pair Irvine / O'Neil with 2 DM the 1st game at home against Bahrain. O'Neill got space to run but instead decided to go sideway and backwards for the whole first half. Was very frustrating to watch in that game.

When I watched the replay I thought it was yengi rowles and boyles fault. If a player goes sideways or backwards it is often because there isn't a better option

Yengi was coming back from injury and was static, as was Boyle. Rowles kept missing it when oniell opened a passing lane in a good area and would only pass it when oniell was covered.

When you have a space to run you have to occupy the space to open up otherwise you wasted your chance to attack. Thats a basic football & a common sense. Then I watched Japan v Bahrain and thats exactly what the Japanese did. I notice even Irvine do it when he got space to run. Only O'Neill didn't.

You did that in EPL the coach would probably have yelled at you.

I don't like Luongo at 10. He's a 6 or 8 but our options atm are pretty threadbare. Maybe try Kalik but it's a punt.

Kalik is a good shout. Nisbet and Kalik are the two playing at the moment. Though I don't mind the idea of Luongo more advanced.

After watching all the U20 games at the U 20 Asian Cup, the future augurs well.

I'm really worried with Circati and Souttar's long term injuries and finding replacements in the short term though.

ATM Bennie from the u 20s shows great promise as a future senior Socceroo RB.

Was also really impressed by Okon and Deli as U 20 DMs.

Kikianis was also good, but I don't think he is ready for senior Socceroo selection - yet. Unless surrounded by experienced players.

I keep writing this - but after we had the KNVB Youth Coaches, Ad Derkson and Arie Schans, coaching Aus coaches in Aus in 2008, brought over by FFA Tech Dir, Rob Baan, they dispelled the myth that players on the ball determine to play forwards, sideways or backwards.

They hammered it into all coaches, AL seniors and youth coaches - Popa, Muscat, Veart, Corica, Tobin, Alagich, Aloisi, the Vidmars, Arthur Papas, Damian Davies - that the player on the ball passes to whomever shows themselves in opening passing lanes to support the ball carrier.

That it is incumbent on the players off the ball to support the ball carrier. That the players off the ball determine where the ball is played, not the ball carrier.

I'm nervous!

Hope it never comes ATM, with all the injuries!
I joked on the very first pod that we need an international war to delay the game till our injured players return or our youngsters get a bit more experience

Indo have a strong squad, we will be lucky to get anything out of this match. They smashed the Saudis a side that out played us.

Indonesia are much stronger than they were. I don't agree we will be lucky to get anything out of the game. We should be favourites and get a result unless we hit that banana skin. It's up to us to perform to our potential.

Indonesia never give up but they were susceptible to conceding so we've really got to pressure them and tighten at the back ourselves. Although Japan away will be a dead rubber they sort of have only 3 games left. Even this one is Australia is viewed as incredibly tough and they'll need a result.
