2025 Hahn Australia Cup

Put on my best heavy Kappa football jacket and went and watched some wet weather football. Games like this the football community comes out so caught up with a bunch of football types, shame about the weather but a couple of thousand people rocked up so that's good enough for me. Very vocal crowd.

APIA played well and kept the pressure on all night and played expansive football and peppered the MCFC goal with shots and rightly deserved the victory.

If A Leagues teams aren't going to treat this competition with the respect it deserves and therefore aren't in a mindset that this is competitive football then the game is lost before it starts and they all deserve to get knocked out and lose, just like any other team at whatever level of football doesn't had the correct approach.

Good round up, EZ.

Was very close to doing likewise, life ended up getting in the way. Crowd seemed pretty good tbh considering. Will try to get down to the sydney united v Sydney fc game.

Makes you wonder what sort of crowds these traditional clubs would get if they were hypothetically in the A league or even a proper national second div. obviously many people are interested in and willing to attend the cup game on the national stage in a way that they’re simply not re a state league competition, which lets be honest, is really just the die hards

I'm sorry I don't mean to be a dick but these are one of games the tricky part is getting decent crowds every week to games.

I am not looking to defend the AL attitudes towards the Australia Cup - some go hard at it but most just treat it as a serious pre-season game.

I will say there is a huge competitive advantage being in fine season form - especially where AL teams have had significant changes in their top playing roster.

Training and pre-season games just does not hone the blade like a season of football and it is in the cohesion of the in season teams that individual player skills are balanced out.

A big equaliser of AL and other teams and a great thing.

That’s why I said it makes you wonder..because it’s hard to tell based on the data points we have. Both state league and Australia cup games aren’t exactly comparable to what it would be like week in week out in the A league or championship. You’d have the increased profile of the club, you’d have the selling point of being the pinnacle of the local game, you’d build habits of regular fandom etc, but you’d lose the novelty factor

Hehe, probably the opposite mate. There are only six A-League clubs remaining!
I wonder if this is close to the least AL clubs in the 16 ever?
I did not mean it was mathematically unlikely - just that I expected at least one game where two AL clubs were drawn together. It is like Lotto numbers - where you end up with one ball in each of six games and you just think how impossible that you didn't get 2 in one box even.

The Australia Cup is fast becoming a genuine competition for any club to aspire to - far beyond the novelty cup that it may have been viewed as from the start.

I can Jets and Macarthur getting knocked out but I can't see SUFC beating SFC considering SUFC's NPL season performances so far.
Fair points, but we all know that Sydney united have historically been a cup side, their league form seems to go out the window with regard to their performance in cup comps. Much has been made of it of late on various podcasts
