Victory and City have a lot of PR work to do to bring back the old fans and engage with the new. Still counting the cost of that pitch invasion. The general public see those clubs, mainly Victory, as toxic.

I concur.

I mean from my non Aussie perspective, it is clear that cricket and rugby are above soccer in the country as far as popularity goes, bit like soccer is still behind American football and basketball, over here in the USA.

However, I think attendance in general seems to be on the rise and if more effort is put into the grassroots level throughout the country, will only get stronger.
In Australia, football (soccer) is by far the most participated sport in the country. It's actually not even close. Head and shoulders above the others. No shortage of football fans in Australia. No shortage of football clubs in Australia. No shortage of players in Australia. However, per player, it's the lowest funded sport in the country. A-League basically has various issues that unfortunately the people steering the ship (APL now and FA in the past) straight up refuse to address.

Most participated in Jnr registrations of all the codes.

Ryan is clear though he didn't mention AFL followed by NRL then cricket rugby union are followed more at the top flights.
Though Union is struggling there re Club football but their Wannabee games are sell outs.

yep someguyfc we have the best overall potential to grow this bloody game participation wise but the dots can't align yet.

I think we are well ahead of Rugby Union. Matildas sell out everywhere & Socceroos are also quite big when we play the bigger nations.

As a matter of fact I reckon football not A-League is 3rd in every state behind cricket & the eggball code in that state.

Super Rugby does better than I expect though.
Allianz/Suncorp get good crowds and obviously their NT gets sell outs like we do with Roos/Matildas.
The other codes can't compete womens side of ours.
Waratahs get over 15k+ allianz so near you guys but maybe avg more.
Reds/Suncorp around 16/18k avg.

Ah you reckon we/football are 3rd - maybe so or close I guess.

It shouldn't be the priority to get casual fans in. It should be convincing people who have left to return. That's going to be very hard under the current management. Really hope this Tony Bloom rumour is true.

FWIW, City needs to do better. They have the resources to increase their engagement, but from the outside, it doesn't look like they try. 600 more than WU on the same day is dire.

What city need is to follow in the footsteps of WU and get a suitable sized venue.

They have 4 teams in Australia, with averages last season of 14k (Qld), 12k (NSW), 8K (ACT) and 6k (Perth). For those sorts of numbers, it is quite absurd the level of coverage they receive from Nine / Fairfax.

Get the people who play football on weekends to A League games and the grounds will be full every week. I'm not interested in other sport theatre goers.

People at club land that play football....
Depends on their club.

* People who play for a NPL club in the day/afternoon at a certain level may be attending the NPL game at night if they're playing at night.
* If their NPL club that they play for isn't playing at night then those are the people who may want to come to A League games.
* People who play at the grass roots level of NPL or grass roots level in general during the day/afternoon may not have an elite NPL team that is going to be playing at night anyway.

Those people ( and others ) are the people who at participation level are the people all over the world attend top level football games. People who play, people whose kids play.

My point is there has been too much pandering to the eggball ethos of sports spectating and football has gained nothing from those people.

Fair call.... it really doesn't help when the sport is being played in what is effectively the Aleagues off season...

Frightening for Melbourne City.

They will end up at a higher than 20% drop off in attendances from last year. Probably 25%.

Upcoming home games against Macarthur on a Friday night, Jets on a wednesday night (good grief) and then their remaining home games in April will all compete against the AFL.

I dont understand it. They have the best kids in the country and play good football.

In the A-League (or Australia in general) good football only gets you so far and unfortunately not far enough. The reality is that the MC point of difference just isn't very appealing. Firstly the CFG baggage is a deal breaker for anyone who is a Liverpool, Man U, Chelsea or any other EPL club fan. The City blue colour is possibly the single worst choice of colour for a Melbourne based team. Can anyone name a Melbourne/Victorian team (any sport at any level, football, afl, basketball, etc) that uses sky blue? Then there is the match-day experience of going to an 85% empty stadium. Popularity is one of the simplest and effective sales tools. People like doing the popular thing. Nothing screams unpopular more than an empty stadium. People have been super critical of WU (myself included), however filling that little venue week in week out is going to make a big difference for them. Then if they actually get that 15k stadium completed, they could easily overtake MC and get similar numbers to AU each week.

I'm a massive Melbourne city fan and it does feel like a slog sometimes to go. The match day experience is average and I find our active quite anooying then you have all the players coming and going.

MC fan engagement is quite poor. Back in the Heart days, they would have come and meet the players during the season but these days they don't do much. I also note that fans that come from England, their football team is part of the extended family, almost tribal, but neither MC nor APL tend to create that sort of atmosphere.

Or the Syndey Grand Final decision. Many Victory fans saw the league for what it truly was and where its priorities lie.
