ALM/W TV deal

we've got 2 monumental failures Sutho - yep sure have.
Openning up doesn't mean automatically "crowds" but build it I would expect in time it will come.
2/3 even 4 seasons time I'd expect better under the FA being we really have had a proper one in decades and they have the intel of the 2 failures.

This would be close to the best possible outcome for the league, and therefore Australian football, which for better or worse is tied to its success.

One of the strengths for fox was having a league directly into EPL. I was at fox at the time the EPL rights were lost and this (among a lot of other factors) contributed to a loss of value for the a league.

Nine has lost the cricket, has it's own streaming platform with much better market share compared to paramont and also runs the Fairfax papers. You would actually see newspaper media presence again.

If nothing else would be nice to halve multiple bidders

If ten had the nst and 9 the a league that could be interesting too

I would say the nst will be lucky to have any network consider putting the resources in to covering it. I have not see any reporting on this, so could be shown otherwise, but the level of interest would be described as niche. Having nst and pro/rel matters a lot to people here, I don't see it bringing any additional value to any media rights. Football tragics care a lot, mainstream sport fans don't even know it exists.

Article talks about fox open to considering bidding. They would always say this when asked so nothing major there.

A few points on this. They are no longer news limited owned. Dazn has taken over and likes football. They just had the cwc. I still know people at fox, there has been an attitude shift towards football since the takeover, for whatever that is worth. Does that mean they will want the a league? Who knows.

Not being news limited also means you won't see a shift in coverage in news limited print media if fox were to get the a league again.

Sorry, forgot to add you are absolutely correct, multiple serious bidders would be best case. So nine, ten, fox. There is a massive difference between making casual type offers compared to really pitching for the rights. I think nine provides easily the best media exposure. But it is still really only speculation at this point.

Nine bring Fairfax as well.... although Stan is way more expensive than P+
 
I had a think of this and respect you are in the industry but I'm not so sure. I suspect if the nst and a league is on different channels, the championship will try and bill itself as the top division, rather than a second tier (the other tier is fake! Closed shop! We are the highest tier on the australian pyramid etc) and could get to the sort of interest and fan base the nsl got which is fine for a streaming product. The npl numbers on youtube have already jumped a decent amount just at the sheer hint their might be a h&a nst. So I can imagine that been worth a modest sum

I'm happy to be wrong if it turns out to be otherwise. Think about the others codes, does anyone other than the crazies know anything about the lower levels? And they are much bigger than football.

I get the desire for a second division and pro/ rel. But it is really the equivalent of a politician pandering to their base. Football people are screaming for it, for the rest of the country it doesn't even register. And it is the rest of the country you want to get on board if you want bigger media deals.

Would the second division generate enough revenue to warrant someone paying the costs to provide coverage? Let alone paying for the rights on top of this? I am doubtful.
 
BTW Nine is where Gallop tho he was goingā€¦ Gallop then destroyed his relationship with SBS as he planned the move to Nineā€¦. lets hope if its true we donā€™t in the negotiation destroy our relationship with 10/ P+.

The SBS Football relationship has never recovered....

youtube numbers this year for state npl is 18k average viewers per game apparently, a big jump from last year. So you are taking the biggest npl clubs from different leagues and putting them in a more prestigious competition for which they have exclusive access. Then you lose some audience members from the fact that it is not a free service and also don't want to double count people who already have Stan.

To break even on a 1 million dollar deal per club Stan would need to hook up 7k subscriptions per club, less than half the current npl viewership. However, Stan probably want to make a profit on the investment so they would want 10k subscriptions per club

that seems pretty achievable given the spike in npl youtube numbers since the announcement

I haven't seen research on this, so it is just my estimation. If you got 20% of the people watching for free to pay for it that would be unbelievably impressive. People love something free, they don't like parting with cash.

I just deleted more negativity because I want to be positive and I appreciate what these clubs have done for football in aus. I hope I'm wrong and it is a runaway success. But I will be astounded if they pull it off.
 
I reckon the FA want to push the NST to the top and have it viewed on FTA CH10, I think they no the ALM is a sinking ship.

well let me think, the biggest npl clubs should get better than the average on the free youtube stream. Lets say 20k, then if you go 20% that gets you to 4k streamers per club. Thats already 500k revenue a year per club which is modest but not terrible. Then I'd expect some boost from it being a national comp rather than a state comp
 
What's interesting is since News sold Fox, there is a new player in town with big dollars and a sports broadcasting background.

With FTA moving towards live broadcasting of sports as a way of keeping revenues all sports are fair game.

Optus have pulled the pin, they acknowledge they can't compete with the new Fox.

Nine have the NRL which they fear they may loose having already lost the cricket to Seven.

If Nine retain the NRL, Rugby, Tennis, Swimming.... It begs the question were does the A-L sit.

On the other hand Nine bring Fairfax n their am radio network (not sure what value this is).

Further if they have the EPL, Champions League, say JLeague, we could be a very good fit.

Finally no idea when 10/P + deal runs out
