ALM/W TV deal

Graz they gonna hope Viacom extend but that company is bleeding share wise.
In Dazn position they wouldn’t need to make a huge offer if Viacom didn’t extend.

From the start of the 2021/22 season, the A-League and W-League will be aired across the streaming platform and the Network Ten commercial channel. According to the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH), the Australian Professional Leagues (APL), which manages the competitions' rights, signed a five-year contract with ViacomCBS worth AUS$200 million (US$155.5 million) in cash and commercial contra, with the deal also including a trigger for a further three-year extension

so potential 7 years locked in (aka to 28/29)?
that's pretty rough if they are looking for more cash flow

yeah but we have more "crazies"

So Stan is $12 a month so 144 a year.

youtube numbers this year for state npl is 18k average viewers per game apparently, a big jump from last year. So you are taking the biggest npl clubs from different leagues and putting them in a more prestigious competition for which they have exclusive access. Then you lose some audience members from the fact that it is not a free service and also don't want to double count people who already have Stan.

To break even on a 1 million dollar deal per club Stan would need to hook up 7k subscriptions per club, less than half the current npl viewership. However, Stan probably want to make a profit on the investment so they would want 10k subscriptions per club

that seems pretty achievable given the spike in npl youtube numbers since the announcement
Stan is not $12 a month, the sports package is but you also have to buy the standard package, which the last i checked was $25 a month for HD or $15 a month for blur vision.

The APL would be pretty stupid or desperate to lock in another 3 years without having options on the table. $200m over 5 years pretty piss poor when you think Foxtel gave them a $350m over 4 year deal before covid and the APL have to pay for production cost of airing the A-League. The rumor was no one put in a bid for the ALM/W only Paramount so i get it why the APL took it - However the clubs cant keep living off scraps and the APL need to get the best outcome money wise to even if it means not being on the same channel as the Matilda's/Socceroo's.

who has the option to extend though?
Thought LFC was saying that power is in Paramounts hands - they can say "don't bid around we are extending"?

Don't forget Football Australia also has a deal with Paramount to 2028. So maybe APL want to trigger that extension to match the FA timeframe to keep Oz football in one place?

But geez it would be a lift for the league if Stan cough up large and all their outlets support the league. Who knows how long 10 will be around for or whether their money dries up. Might be time to jump ship and piggyback off the EPL.

yeah just need to grab whatever cash you can at this stage since 40mil a year apparently isn't enough

so are apl paying off a bunch of debt? If they spend 15 mil in production then that's still nearly 2 million per club left over?

Surely the APL can ask for more money for the extension to happen.

I had a think of this and respect you are in the industry but I'm not so sure. I suspect if the nst and a league is on different channels, the championship will try and bill itself as the top division, rather than a second tier (the other tier is fake! Closed shop! We are the highest tier on the australian pyramid etc) and could get to the sort of interest and fan base the nsl got which is fine for a streaming product. The npl numbers on youtube have already jumped a decent amount just at the sheer hint their might be a h&a nst. So I can imagine that been worth a modest sum
I think FA will broadcast it on YouTube similar to what they are doing with the Australia Cup. Maybe try to sell it later once it is established.

Fellas, to reiterate as per HG the FA P+ deal is for Roo/Matilda games,/friendlies/WAC 26/Asian Cup in Saudi '27/WWC Brazil '27.
Contract is through to '28.

In the meantime FA/JJ brokered this broadcast deal announced April '25 FYI Cunningstunt, seems there's someone willing to invest :).

I have no care what occurs for the APL generally < for they don't care where I'm invested and good luck to it IF it got DAZN/Stan, it needs it greatly for you guys behind it.
The lower leagues (NST/Championship) won't be relying on alot that CS mentions, its survived on a oily rag for decades let alone minimal huge crowds, sea gulls many times, then good strong crowd yet the Clubs still stand.
The crazies as called, well thats grass roots people by the many, IF just a small portion start to attend one of their local Championship games ahead its a good start.
Graz also don't think the FA need to fly the Championship as the next new flag bearer of the game, I'd sooner it just go along behind the scenes and grow bit by bit, the word of mouth amongst the locals will be enough PR and the Clubs working their socials amongst their huge amount of Jnrs/families etc.
You see evidence of this when going to some Sydney Aus Cup fixtures, solid crowds - families/kids attending.
Start slow, stay low - provide good food, clean toilets, seating sections, enhance 1st team support down to your Jnrs, competitive games, KISS principle all people like to do is watch a good game of local football without so much BS/shit and glitter.

We all follow our football differently, happy to be a Derby supporter in the championship, maybe one day get into PL, but I know we can't compete with Hedge fund teams & oil money teams, 117 million Euros for Wirtz is more than Derby's whole squad & my Liverpool friends still tell me they don't spend like Man City haha bullshit.
However in Australia happy to follow the bigger teams in the top tier & you seem happy to follow teams in the lower tier.

Same Same but Different.

It’s football, that’s all that matters.👍

Just on comments pertaining to revenue and thereby salary levels in Australian football..

To me, and I could be wrong, but we need decent revenue streams to develop football to reach it's full potential.

Crowds, sponsors, shirt sales, broadcasting are the key sources
A new deal would help football overall

same same different - there will always be the have's and have nots, shuffling of the deck - no matter the type of funding it comes from.
Least Derby and every/any other club no matter the Div world over have the opportunity to go UP let alone DOWN, thats football :)

By the way good to see you here posting Middy instead of reddit :)
Entice Wazza back over here when in your the other place.

This would be close to the best possible outcome for the league, and therefore Australian football, which for better or worse is tied to its success.

One of the strengths for fox was having a league directly into EPL. I was at fox at the time the EPL rights were lost and this (among a lot of other factors) contributed to a loss of value for the a league.

Nine has lost the cricket, has it's own streaming platform with much better market share compared to paramont and also runs the Fairfax papers. You would actually see newspaper media presence again.
This 1,000%.

For those based in NSW, look at the coverage Fairfax papers (i.e. SMH) provide rugby union at the moment, but avoids anything A-League. It is absurdly disproportionate to the level of crowds, attendance and general interest between the two codes / competitions. The media blackout currently being faced by the A-League is killing it. It is a testament to the sport that, despite this, the A-League has 13 teams and averages over 9,000 per game.

That's old news but excellent news.... and lets hope its an outrageous success...

Equally I want A-L broadcasting to be an outrageous success....

You posted above re I presume you mean Waz, and commented its good to see you posting here instead of reddit... as I posted never even read any article on reddit on anything, never mind posting there..... however you do raise an interesting why do some obviously Football folk post less on here than what they use to post and some have gone...

For me and remember I support all levels of Football in Australia and been involved in Football for over 65 years....

What I find on this site is a lot of negativity towards the A-L.... mostly around the Football pyramid and the franchise model the A-L uses...

Personally I want P & R, I want 32 + professional teams, I want successful national teams, etc etc etc.... however I have been around Football since I was 5, followed a NSW Association side Auburn, then Blacktown Demons when I lived there, when back from overseas I followed The Northern Spirit, and today the Central Coast Mariners.... played until I was 63 when a health condition stopped me playing... coached sides, sat on local Football committees...

I am not claiming anything special, about me...

My experience over all my Football life is no one has ever been happy, from the 1955 take over forward... the never ending negativity towards Football for 70 + years by Football folk...

People get sick to death of both the argument and often attacks on those with different views...

Further and it should never be forgotten, the A-L has been around now for 20 years, and for most fans under 40 this is their competition.... so if the A-L falls over then the circle will continue with these fans wanting a return to now.

I have no idea how to solve the P & R issue, but I know attacking the A-L is not the answer, we need a strong and successful professional league to drag in revenue and eyes.

I don’t think it’s negative to want a true football pyramid and the franchise model doesn’t want to be part of that.
I don’t think it’s true that people on here are ‘attacking ‘ the A League but for many Frank Lowy started THIS divide and Lowy jnr and David Gallop exacerbated it.
