Honestly when we have to start trying to persuade players to play for us .. i don't want them anywhere near our NT. You either want to play for us or you don't. When the going gets tough you really think flakey people like this will put in the hard yards for this country?? Fuck no!Triantis officially opting for Greece. It'll take a lot to grace this thread again. So disappointing but Popovic has a lot to answer for. No one will asking him flat out about it.
If you have Disney+ in Australia they have Eredivisie games so can follow Balard and Bos.
What about a player who isn't good enough to play for his country and chose us as option #B?Honestly when we have to start trying to persuade players to play for us .. i don't want them anywhere near our NT. I don't care if they are a superstar. Give me the player that loves this country and wants to play for this country and nothing but.
Don't blame Poppa.
We've had a few of those. Some haven't worked out great, but some have been players who seem to lift when they play for us. The former usually only get two or three games. The latter usually get to play for a few years. What about a player who isn't good enough to play for his country and chose us as option #B?
exactly right.... this misguided ultranationalistic take on players playing for the jersey is a falacy... Players are, like most humans, want to do whats right for them first and foremost... Does anyone here think that if Cahill or Kewell had an inkling of a chance to play for England they wouldn't have leaped at it?We've had a few of those. The great Craig Johnston once said, playing football for Australia was like surfing for England, thankfully Kewell didn't listen to him when Eddie Thomson gave him his debut. Kewell would have easily played for England as his peak.exactly right.... this misguided ultranationalistic take on players playing for the jersey is a falacy... Cahill was tied to one of the Samoa's for a while and he was one of the cases that led to them changing the rules about switching nations. Thomson brought Kewell into the national team at 17, a great piece of foresight. I always thought he gave his all for us even though he copped a lot of criticism from fans at various times about commitment.exactly right.... this misguided ultranationalistic take on players playing for the jersey is a falacy... Sure matey, you are not understanding my point... AT his peak he could have made a fairly strong England squad I agree, the bloke was a talent no doubt, but as a 17 year old he wasn't even being looked at by England... if he HAD been I think he may have been persuaded....The great Craig Johnston once said, playing football for Australia was like surfing for England, thankfully Kewell didn't listen to him when Eddie Thomson gave him his debut. At 17 he had already debuted for Leeds in the EPL shortly before his Socceroos debut I believe. You're correct that England would not have looked at him for a debut like we did at that age, but if he had a different attitude he could easily have been persuaded to decline the call up, similar to the Volpato situation.Sure matey, you are not understanding my point... I remember seeing a news snippet of Kewell. It was from when he was 11 - 13. The item came out when he was in his 20s. In it he said his dream was to play for England. Thank God he changed his mind.exactly right.... this misguided ultranationalistic take on players playing for the jersey is a falacy... I think it was an old TWG panel interview with Johnston. The surfing for England comment was about the lack of seriousness in Australian football, not his desire to play. My memory is a little fuzzy about this but I believe he made himself available for matches and was then shafted by the FA, made to pay for his own flights or something which made it completely impractical for him to do it.I remember seeing a news snippet of Kewell. Craig Johnston (a couple of U21 games) and Tony Dorrigo (15 games including 1 at a World Cup) also had the same dream.
Thanks for posting. Fairly sure he was asked to pay for his own flights, but it’s so long ago and pre-internet so it’s very hard to prove.I think it was an old TWG panel interview with Johnston. How true this is who really knows. But he never did play for England or Scotland, which he was eligible to do.
