He did come up with legislating for a nuclear power industry, coordinating it with the agreement of all states, design, propose, consult, approve their construction next to available water, train a workforce to build, train a workforce to operate 6 nuclear power plants to power the whole of Australia using an off the shelf small modular design that hasn't been invented yet and finishing it on time and on budget - 12 years for the entire thing - which is half the time of countries that have had a nuclear industry and without their cost overruns, and average out the costs over 100 years to make it look cheaper than building transmission wires that are already built but would look great being rebuilt in gold.

That's pretty fucking original.

I think that anyone betting the house on renewable energy is going to be in for a shock in terms of funding risk and there is certainly lots of financial risk in renewables. The banks are not going to be particularly keen to fund private investment unless there's a big uptick in government funding to mitigate financial risk and incentivize development.

The National Capacity Investment Scheme in Australia goes someway to underwrite risky investments in renewables but it's going to be impossible for any government to fully fund the need of providing certainty for renewable investors. Which is what most are asking for. Guarantee of future revenues if you like??

And the volatility of politics in the new age of political populism is proving that a change of government can severely affect the validity of certainty....

Personally I think you need a mixture of renewable, nuclear and carbon. Carbon emissions being captured of course and carbon capture is something that should be looked at.

Nuclear energy is by far the cleanest and most reliable but construction cost blow-outs are running at about 250-300% internationally and 5-10 year projects generally taking 20-25 to complete.

Whatever way it's not going to be easy and may I add not something for the faint hearted!!

This is the crux of the matter.
 
Coal and gas work fine. Nuclear energy can be brought online in the future but we have perfectly good energy sources we can be using in the meantime...however the morons insist on relying on expensive wind turbines and solar panels...such that we have the most expensive energy in Asia and we wonder why all our manufacturing has gone offshore....
 
Nuclear is just a wedge by Dutton to keep his coal mates happy. He, and anyone with half a brain, knows they will never be built.

And besides which there's more than enough gas to power Australia for the next 100 years. (And more.) If renewable and battery technology aren't feasible before gas runs out then maybe, maybe think about nuclear.
