"Can you smell the fear?", do the other football codes in Australia (AFL,NRL), genuinely fear football?

On what criteria is Football bigger in Australia? Participation. What else?
I think you are confused.
I asked you on what basis you think Australian rules football and soccer can be considered equal.
It’s obviously not participation and it’s not media attention so what is it?

I've lived in Western Sydney for 40 years and in my experience while people have their preferences it's always been both/and for league and football (not an either/or). The Eels owned Parra Power in the NSL at one stage and the NRL/football have lobbied together in NSW for better facilities.

AFL on the other hand... The sooner this sport that is relevant to only a few states is dead and stops taking some of our best atheletes and money for sporting infrastructure, the better Australian sport all round will be.

So long as its traditional Melb/VIC clubs survive the code’s extinction to become ⚽️ clubs and pick up from where Collingwood Warriors and Carlton SC left off back in the day…

From our mouths to God’s ears🙏🏼

Yes, the photo was published in The Age which is also a 9Entertainment nee Fairfax newspaper.
The AFL is not going anywhere anytime soon.

Finally saw the Herald-Sun's take on it; it briefly mentions Albo meeting Kev, but has a small pic of Albo shaking hands w/who I assume is either a player/fan/backroom-staff member of Shanghai Port FC wearing said club's kit; point is, it's not Muscat. The bigger pic of Albo on the opposite page doesn't feature anything ⚽-related, alas.

, ,Where to start...

I remember Hill's article very well..... he challenged the main stream media and he changed the conversation at the time.... arguably IMO one of the most important articles written over the last 25 or so years...

The Seven email, Nobody Screws Soccer like Seven, The attacking of the WC bid, the attacks on WSW fans in the mid teens... the attach on some MV fans... its always there...

Without doubt we have created many of our own issues but without doubt especially the AFL have been on the attack for decades..

Had a client for many years before his passing way to young but he was a very senior executive and advised two of Australia's major companies how much to sponsor various sports in Australia..... he knew by name and had the phone number of every sports head in the country and often spoke to them

He was a Sydney boy, he often told me over a number of lunches we had along with some excellent Hunter Reds.... but he often said the AFL was and had been for years been on a war footing against all other sports especially Football.... the fear of the AFL was essentially a code contained in the Southern States of Australia... and if they lost those states the code would die... the southern states media took it upon themselves to ensure the AFL would dominate in those states...

In another post I may post an old joke about the AFL its a bit long to put in this post....

My client put it this way and it makes even more sense today.... NSW, QLD, ACT regional areas have a bigger population than the southern states not counting greater Melbourne.... RL also has a huge following in PNG 6 million and a decent following in NZ and PI nations meaning the reach of RL is greater for the NRL, than the AFL in population terms...

Further he said in the southern states the AFL was in what market analysis call the mature phase in that they have so much of the market in those states its difficult to see expansion in those states only declines... so they have to move into the northern states to expand....

Football is a massive threat to the AFL because like like Union, Basketball, Cricket their are international aspects helping these codes to recover... whereas AFL has it all on the 18 team professional competition, and it has heaps of backers who see it almost as their duty to protect and preserve it....

There is a difference in how most RL fans seen Football to most AFL fans.... most RL fans have Football as their second code and don't mind watching a decent match.... Football and league often play on the same fields and the cross over between 5 or 6 a side Football and RL's Touch is huge ....

The other elephant in the room is the extent media companies have invested in RL & AFL and their desire to drown out all other competition, shown well in this Crickey article.

Great topic, we do as a code have many self inflicted wounds... but be under no illusion the AFL n NRL want to hurt us.

RU also.

There is a particular ex-union player who became a TV personality for a while and stuck the boot into football at every opportunity. I modeled Greg Beaufort on him, for those who have read Mr Cleansheets.

Something particularly nasty happens to Greg Beaufort.

Peter Fitz still does.

Peter also hates league but adores AFL.

He kinda fits into the overall attack on Football.
